Chris Nelson’s Saturday Randwick Preview Posted on April 18, 2024April 18, 2024 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 Another big day of Group 1 racing at Randwick kicks off with a 1400m Midway which as per all the Midways looks very open, nothing jumps off the page that’s for sure. I’ll lean to PEAK on an each-way basis who goes to 1400m for the first time & does give every indication he’ll run it out. Love to see him settle a little closer & that may well be the case with the step up in distance. ELETTRICA clearly has the best form however really climbs in the weights, UZZIAH should be ready to show something. Numbers: 11 – 1 – 2 – 6 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 2 First thing noticed here is the inside draw for BELVEDERE BOYS, he’s a promising horse however his pattern is to get back, he’ll no doubt get buried & need a lot of luck from back in the ruck. RAPBIDASH also gets back in her races however drawn out she can come with an unimpeded run down the straight, her 3rd in the Country Championship here a fortnight back was good, held up badly she should have finished closer. ONE BEAT NO BEAT a chance with luck from wide alley. Numbers: 4 – 3 – 8 – 1 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 3 Have a strong feeling we might see a smart one here in the ex-Kiwi SCARLET OAK who was heavily backed to win across the ditch at Matamata mid-March. She sat back before looming up early in the straight to win running away, yes it was a maiden & this is a Group 3 however she’s with Chris Waller & ambled home in a recent trial win. Should the track be no worse than soft I’d expect a big improvement from MIRAVEL ROSE who didn’t fancy the heavy here a fortnight back. INHIBITIONS & another Waller trained ex-Kiwi CHICA MOJITO in the mix. Numbers: 12 – 2 – 3 – 4 Suggested Bet: Follow any market support for SCARLET OAK. RACE 4 I’ve convinced myself TANNHAUSER is a wet tracker & he needs 1800m plus. The heavy ground last start gave him a chance at 1600m however he just couldn’t quite peg back the winner late. 2000m today is ideal & should the rain come I’m keen to be in his corner, anything soft or wetter will do. Stablemate SALTCOATS has been a bit hard to catch however ridden back last start he kept finding the line, stays at the same trip today. KINTYRE did a good job this trip two back, gate 1 for Jamie Kah should gain a cosy run. Numbers: 1 – 3 – 4 – 15 Suggested Bet: TANNHAUSER TO WIN (If wet). RACE 5 Have to be with the speedy FRONT PAGE here who shouldn’t have any trouble finding the front. He gave a big sight in The Galaxy only being run down late & his record here is a very good won having won a couple of Kosciuszko’s at this trip. KALINO has won fresh at his past two preps & maps in the first 3 or 4, definite claims. I can’t catch AFT CABIN or MAZU, both are well up to winning this should things pan out. Numbers: 7 – 6 – 2 – 1 Suggested Bet: FRONT PAGE TO WIN ($2.50 or better). RACE 6 Plenty of winning chances here where I’m having a ‘throw at the stumps’ with the unfancied HUETOR the top tip. He’s a horse who seems to take a run first up however can improve sharply from then on. Second up two preps back he placed in Group 3 company before just out of the money same level second up at his last campaign. Gate 1 should see him gain a good run & he’s far from the worst. No idea whether NEW ENERGY will run 2000m, his only two starts in the country (1300 & 1500m) suggest he will. FAWKNER PARK gets in nice & light at the weights. Numbers: 1 – 6 – 12 – 4 Suggested Bet: HUETOR EACH-WAY (small bet). RACE 7 Third leg of the 2yo Triple Crown is the Group 1 Champagne which although only featuring a small field looks an interesting race. Without doubt the likes of LINEBACKER & BROADSIDING have plenty of upside & deserve a crack at this stronger level, both have impressed at recent wins. I’m sticking with the Group 1 form though putting the Sires winner MANAAL on top, she was terrific in the Slipper running on & arrived in the nick of time last time when up to 1400m, the mile today is ideal. Numbers: 7 – 3 – 2 – 1 Suggested Bet: MANAAL TO WIN. RACE 8 Must be with ESPIONA in the Group 1 All Aged. She was extremely unlucky in the T.J. a fortnight back when unable to gain a clear run in the straight until 50m from the line, once into the open she made good ground, in fact she managed to clock the quickest last 200m split which was a handy effort considering she spent 150m of it held up! She races well enough here & loves 1400m. SUNSHINE IN PARIS should be right at her peak third run back & draws to get the right run. CHAIN OF LIGHTNING won that T.J. & the form all around his previous win at Rosehill is top rate, 1400m at this level may test him though? Numbers: 9 – 10 – 12 – 8 Suggested Bet: ESPIONA TO WIN. RACE 9 Closing two races look very open affairs. I’m siding with WATERFORD here & will be looking for market support as he is resuming. His first up outing last prep resulted in a Group 2 3rd, he repeated that performance second up & I liked his recent soft trial, should be ready to go. WELWAL draws well & gets in nicely after the claim, will find this easier than most recent efforts. Not sure about JIMMYSSTAR, he’s going to get back here & may have to pass most if not all runners, that’s going to be a task. Numbers: 9 – 3 – 12 – 15 Suggested Bet: WATERFORD EACH-WAY. RACE 10 Leaning to the first up KAZOU who was fitted up for his return with a totally dominant trial win recently scoring by over 8 lengths. Not sure he’ll find the front here with Kibou & Rise Of The Masses engaged however that will just enable J. Mac to drop into the box seat behind the lead riding the rail. GENERAL SALUTE is the knockout, he just gets too far back in his races however can reel off a slick sectional & he’s been close in clearly superior races than this, I’d be having a saver. Include WATEGOS who has trialled well & is a first up winner. Numbers: 12 – 17 – 2 – 3 Suggested Bet: KAZOU TO WIN (small bet). Market Market
