Scott Embry’s Wednesday Belmont Preview

Race 1

PROPERATA looks well placed by Team Pearce. Was a $230,000 yearling purchase and on debut as a 2 year old he finished second to Red Lark beating home Ace Queen Suited and then in his second preparation he went around in a Magic Millions before placing to Here The Boom in a 2 year old Saturday. Races up over the speed (of which there’s plenty) and trialled up particularly well for his return. The Faithfull – Pearce combination produced 4 winners at Kal on Sunday and that momentum can continue here. CHILE GAL trialled nicely, but where does she get to from an awkward draw? STAR MARTINI has only 52kg and is very speedy, but vulnerable late. VIENNA CALLING has great race form but I wasn’t a fan of the trial?

Race 2

BOOKENDS is one of many strong chances for Grant & Alana Williams at the last metro meeting as they look to leapfrog Michael Grantam to continue their recent dominance of the WA Trainers Premiership. After winning a maiden and a C1 she stepped into Saturday Graduation company for the first time in her life and was far from disgraced beaten 2.5L behind In Confidence. Back in grade, back to her own age group and maps to get all the favours. SUNSET SESSION took a little while to break his maiden but does seem the kind of horse who will work his way through the grades now that he’s figured out what he’s supposed to be doing. JUST WALTER JOHN went around in a 66+ last start that contained subsequent 72+ winner Zourun Run. This is a far more suitable event.  FLASH DANCER backs up off 6 days after a gritty win at Northam.

Race 3

PUCKER UP made an encouraging debut at Belmont in a 2 year old Saturday event when less than 3L off Dawn Dancer and highly regarded youngster Morning Thunder. Was a bit slow away, got a little held up on straightening but attacked the line full of running at 1000m and now drops into a midweek maiden, gets out to 1200m and gets the services of a senior rider. She was also $21 into $14 late in betting on debut so there was an expectation in the market that she would run well – and she did. PROFIT MOTIVE trialled super. She was making solid ground under her own steam and was never tested by Holly Watson. Big watch on debut. MARCOS ran around in Supremacy Stakes and Perth Stakes last prep. Moved well in his 400m jump out. SIPPA SPRITZ went to the line alongside Pucker Up and can lead this line-up.

Race 4

RAW UMBER really caught the eye late at trials and if Profit Motive was to win or run well in the previous (a clearly deeper and better division of this split 2 year old 1200m maiden) then the trial form will only look stronger. When Giaan O’Donnell asked him to accelerate in the straight he worked into top gear quickly before the gaps all closed on him. Parks midfield, waits until they all fan along the cutaway and then attempts to burst through late. BLUE SPARX finished less than 2L off Quedjinup on debut – that’s going to read up well for a long while, she’s a seriously nice filly. Just has to overcome the gate but could be a big price. SLATERS LEGACY covered ground in the most recent trial but kept finding late. SPIRIT OF BELLE can lead or box seat.

Race 5

SILENT DIVA has had two starts for a new set of connections after a 50% share went through an Inglis Online Sale and was purchased astutely for a meagre $5000. In two runs this prep she’s won $12,330 so they’re already on the right side of the ledger and this looks an ideal race for her. 60+ Graduation back into a C1 is great, the only query being whether she can lump the 60kg. Grant & Alana winkers on has been a gear change ATM for punters for years: last 750 days = 6/16, a 37.5% Strike Rate at 82% POT. WESTERN JET similarly drops right back in grade, has a gear change with blinkers on first time and looks very well placed. LEMMOR FILOU is improving with racing, both pre-race and throughout the race as a filly who has had some bad manners over her short career. STAR SUPREME showed something first-up in a Westspeed Platinum.

Race 6

CONCHETTA’S DREAM has been luckless this entire preparation. Featured heavily in the Stewards Report first-up, second-up, third-up and fourth-up before finally enjoying a half decent run and finishing second in a C3 behind subsequent 60+ Graduation winner and exciting prospect Western Miss at this distance last time out. She’s back into a C1, she has blinkers on first time and she should settle a pair in front of her main rival in American Image. After months of waiting – could finally be her birthday. AMERICAN IMAGE demolished maiden opposition and then worked her way through late in a C1 behind Take A Leaf. Pike back on will keep her very short. She’s a work in progress and the obvious danger. LADY MONEY TALK can roll to the top and control. GINGER AND TONIC is giving 110%.

Race 7

MAI ALOHA is no star but she’s consistently there abouts. After winning a C3 1000 first-up she’s finished bridesmaid at her next three: to Under Influence, to Girls Day Out (beating home subsequent winner Millstee) and to Ripper Farooq. If nobody wants to lead she can, if they put some speed into the race she can park and ride. You just know what you’re going to get and there’s <1 length between the top 6/7 in this very evenly graded sprint. MILITARY POWER was enormous first-up after finding himself back last in an unfamiliar position. Would have loved for it to rain but still, outstanding return. ETERNAL WINE is double accepted for Wednesday and Thursday. Interesting to see which way they go because she’s been going well without luck recently. GOLD FLAKES sneaks back in grade with a senior on. Don’t be surprised if she runs a big race.

Race 8

RAINLINE was a late scratching at Pinjarra last Wednesday after slipping over leaving the mounting yard. She’s a 2x 0MWLY winner going around in a C3. Very well placed and runs for Holly Nottle. She’s been carrying the weight well enough in recent runs to suggest that back in grade she’s the one to beat. CHOUX SHOE let rip with a massive L600 to win first-up at Pinjarra before heading into a 60+ Graduation that was never going to suit behind Diamonds’n’Rubies, a race where the first 800m was run 6L slower than average and she was out the back last. Complete forgive. ROMANTIC RULER is back in trip to 1400m which could be a query mid-prep but his 66+ run behind Urquharts Bluff and Territory Man was super. Not easy to catch but racing well. STREAK OF GOD is a lightly raced youngster resuming off a solid 950 trial.

Race 9

REFEMME NO ANGEL bolted in a 3 year old 0MWLY first-up in really good time. He has been nominated for the last two Saturdays but drawn horribly, so instead stays in midweek company for his second-up run. This is effectively a drop in grade back into a C3 taking on the ‘older’ horses and he only rises half a kilo start to start. Expect he’ll be very popular in betting and takes a stack of beating. Looks an odds on pop to me. MAIN ACT has run some nice races in 60+ Graduation grade over the last 6 – 12 months. 3L off horses like Ourgirlcanrun, Too Darn Stormy, Urquharts Bluff, Like Clockwork and Awesome Boy read up brilliantly for a midweek race. ARTICOLE is not winning by big margins but you have to admire the way he’s just getting the job done. ROMMING DANGER could sneak under the guard of the market.
