Deane Lester’s Caulfield Best Bets

RACE 2 NO.1 GREAT AGAIN

Superior wet tracker GREAT AGAIN is well placed to return to winning form when he tackles the Open Handicap (1400m). The Lindsey Smith trained gelding has been freshened up after a below standard performance when finishing 8th behind ZIPPING BOY over 1000 metres at Sandown Hillside on June 12. He is far better placed stepping up to 1400 metres off the back of a good trial at Coleraine last week. He also wears blinkers for the first time, gets the benefit of Lachlan Neindorf’s 3kg claim and looks the only leader in the race. On a competitive program, GREAT AGAIN appeals as the best bet of the day.

RACE 3 NO.7 LORD PARAMOUNT

The Maher/ Eustace stable is about to be crowned Melbourne’s champion stable for the 2020-21 season and have several runners at this meeting. Perhaps the best value chance of their team is LORD PARAMOUNT when he runs in the VOBIS Gold Ingot (1400m). The grey made an encouraging debut from the stable’s Sydney base when finishing a narrow 2nd over 1100 metres at Nowra on July 2. The son of Frosted handled the wet conditions strongly on that occasion, should be fitter for that run and appears drawn for a lovely run with John Allen to take the ride. This is an even race for the Super VOBIS qualified horses, however LORD PARAMOUNT might be the fresh horse in this class to come along and win at nice odds.

RACE 4 NO.6 MISS ALBANIA

MISS ALBANIA showed great talent in her first racing campaign and commences her second preparation when she runs in the Fillies and Mares Benchmark 90 Handicap (1100m). At her last start, the daughter of Magnus ran a brave 2nd behind LA MEXICANA over 1100 metres at Caulfield on January 26. For that 0.5 lengths defeat, she meets LA MEXICANA 8kg better which has to be significant. She’s also had two solid trials in preparation for this race, whereas LA MEXICANA has only had one soft trial, suggesting that her bigger goals are deeper into her campaign. MISS ALBANIA gets the services of Craig Williams in the saddle, should race on the pace and prove hard to beat.
