Chris Nelson’s Saturday Rosehill Preview

Race 1

Racing at Rosehill on Saturday with plenty of features on the card. Weather will be fine & the track rated good. We get things underway with a 1400m Highway where I’m sticking with (9) EXTREME who I did tip last start when not far away. Post race he was found to have been galloped on adding further merit to the performance. Ticks plenty of boxes here & drops a couple of kilos in weight. (1) WAYBURN is on trial out to this trip, luckless at Randwick last week after a slow start. Include stablemate (15) BRUTAL MISS who is in the right camp to win one of these races.

Numbers: 9 – 1 – 15 – 14

Suggested Bet: EXTREME CHOICE EACH-WAY (small bet).

Race 2

To the Midway where (11) BETTER LATE looks well placed to bring his winning provincial form to the city. He’s a different horse this prep having been gelded, even his trials before resuming were winning ones & he’s drawn ideally for Tim Clark who will suit his on-pace running style. (4) HEROIC DEED the danger, two wins from as many starts this prep & three from four overall, done absolutely nothing wrong. (2) ANNIE’S ROSE has the form however the inside gate is a major concern for a mare with no early speed.

Numbers: 11 – 4 – 2 – 3

Suggested Bet: BETTER LATE EACH-WAY (small bet).

Race 3

Taking a punt on (5) KENMARE BAY running the 2400m out here as she’s yet to take the trip on. She’s always strong at the end of her races though & maybe looking for the extra? (3) APPEARED has won both outings since coming from Ireland, rise in class here however one thing about him, he’ll stay all day long. (1) UNBELIEVABLE the other chance in the race, better last start however still needs to improve a little more.

Numbers: 5 – 3 – 1 – 4

Suggested Bet: Small numbers, box up exotics top 2 selections.

Race 4

Rising 1600 to 2000m last start (10) ANTHRACITE did a good job in beating all bar the winner Aethelwulf who cantered home & is a very promising type. Thought this Joe Pride trained galloper fought on very well to the line holding off the rest & back to 1800m today certainly won’t harm his chances, did I mention he drops 3kg down to 52kg also! The big watch is the resuming mare (5) AETHELFLAED who hasn’t raced for 71 weeks, injury plagued she ran 2nd in the VRC Oaks back in 2023. Just the 2 outings last prep & both were very good, market? (7) MUKHTALIF needs to improve, certainly in the mix on his best form.

Numbers: 10 – 5 – 7 – 2

Suggested Bet: ANTHRACITE TO WIN.

Race 5

Looking forward to seeing (7) CHISPA return here. Two runs in Brisbane during the winter, she was good in the first before out of the money the other where there were excuses. Trials have been no guide as she’s been out the back at both asked for nothing. She may need this hit out, market will be our guide. (13) SCRIPTED hasn’t done punters (or tipsters) any favours winning only 2 of her 10 starts, to be fair though she’s been very unlucky on multiple occasions. This looks suitable, I’ll put her on top strictly each-way though. (6) SILVANITO & (8) TRANSCEND in the mix also.

Numbers: 13 – 6 – 8 – 7

Suggested Bet: SCRIPTED EACH-WAY (small bet).

Race 6

I may be going off a run or two early however I’ll tip the resuming (2) STORMY MARCO first up off just the one trial. Dominant winning on debut at Hawkesbury in a feature race he then went north to tackle the main 2yo races over the Brisbane winter carnival. Luckless in the Sires before running home well in the Atkins behind star stablemate Tron Bolt he went straight into my blackbook. Is he ready? Well the market will tell us that closer to race time I guess. (11) SAVAGRAM was good in the Up & Coming, additional distance a plus. Interesting runner is (6) I’M YA HUCKLEBERRY who has big wraps on him, easy kill first up at Wyong at $1.24 he needs to step it up here & will likely do so.

Numbers: 2 – 11 – 6 – 9

Suggested Bet: Follow any market support for STORMY MARCO.

Race 7

The Group 2 Sheraco. Without doubt the class is at the top with (1) LADY SHENANDOAH & (2) LAZZURA, both will prove very hard to beat. I’m just going a little wider suggesting we have something each-way on the resuming (10) PLAINTIFF who has only been defeated once in 5 attempts, that one off came at her final run last prep when trapped 3 deep the trip. Trialling very well she can run a big race fresh. (1) LADY SHENANDOAH comes out of the Winx Stakes where she had her chance, big step down in grade for her though, past 4 starts have been in Group 1 company where she’s finished no further back than fourth. (2) LAZZURA resumes, she won’t be far away.

Numbers: 10 – 1 – 2 – 8

Suggested Bet: PLAINTIFF EACH-WAY (small bet).

Race 8

The Group 2 Run To The Rose for the 3yo’s. Last season’s 2yo group were very hard to split & not surprisingly now as 3yo’s nothing has changed! I’m going to put (7) ST GOTTHARD on top however I will say he’s too short for my liking in early markets. Unbeaten to date winning at Warwick Farm on debut he then went to the Gold Coast bolting in the Ken Russell. We all expected him to push on towards the Atkins however Chris Waller had other plans & put him away with the spring in mind. Well, here he is having won one trial, unplaced the other. Stablemate (2) TRON BOLT likely finds this too short however that’s not a given, already a Group 1 winner from 4 starts, don’t underestimate. (11) CENTRAL EUROPRE will appreciate the rise in distance. Great race, many chances.

Numbers: 7 – 2 – 11 – 5

Suggested Bet: ST GOTTHARD ($3.50 or better).

RACE 9

Another Group 2 this time the 1300m Theo Marks. I’m with the mare (7) VERONA ROSE who resumes with a good first up record. She placed fresh up in the Group 3 Triscay last prep sitting wide without cover beaten just over a length before winning at Group 2 company second up when very strong to the line. Close up in a recent trial, should be ready to go. (6) SKYHOOK also resumes off only a short break having raced successfully during the Brisbane winter, recent trial winner. (2) MILITARIZE always in the mix.

Numbers: 7 – 6 – 2 – 5

Suggested Bet: VERONA ROSE EACH-WAY.

Race 10

Tough looking race to wind up the day. (3) NAVY PILOT seems overs in early markets. Resumes here with a trial win, solid fresh record & a suitable track condition, the drier the better for him & we should be on better than a good (4) by this time of the day. Claim, good gate, definitely worth an each-way play. (1) GRAND IMPACT had his chance last start & it’s now been a while since he’s won however he’s hard fit & consistent. (10) RUINATION saluted first up as a gelding, might be ready to go right on with it now.

Numbers: 3 – 1 – 10 – 6

Suggested Bet: NAVY PILOT EACH-WAY.
