Chris Nelson’s Saturday Rosehill Preview Posted on January 18, 2024January 18, 2024 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 No shortage of 2yo’s going around in this opening race! I’m sticking with the strength & that’s the Waterhouse/Bott yard who have a stable full of 2yo stars including last week’s Magic Millions winner Storm Boy. FULLY LIT is their runner here, he’s had the two trials & what caught my eye in the latest was the hold the jock had, he was half-strangling the youngster who could have won & clearly so. The well-bred BOSUSTOW in the mix if gains a run, cost almost a million & is half to Amelia’s Jewel. The other emergency SWITZERLAND went for 1.5 million, trials good. Numbers: 7 – 15 – 16 – 11 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 2 Big field to go around in this week’s Highway. Happy to have a ‘throw at the stumps’ at one at odds being CHAIRMAN’S LIST who placed at Randwick this trip three back before not seeing out the mile the last couple also at Randwick, back to 1400m around here with no weight again he might take some catching. BON FRANKIE wasn’t far away this grade final run last prep & only failed narrowly first up, definite danger. ASSOCIATE was good first up trapped wide in a race not run to suit, lightly raced will need luck from the wide draw. Numbers: 15 – 2 – 6 – 1 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 3 Going with the resuming GENTLY ROLLED in this weeks Midway. She’s only a lightly raced mare with a good record who has been given a couple of soft trials not being asked to feature, that was also the case last prep when only missing out narrowly first up. The booking of J. Mac suggests connections feel she can win. XPRESSO improved nicely second up & should continue on that path here, can certainly fill a placing. FIELD WIRI is always competitive around this level & sometimes better, will have to deal with a wide gate. Numbers: 8 – 3 – 13 – 5 Suggested Bet: GENTLY ROLLED TO WIN (small bet) RACE 4 Looks an ideal race for the front running TIME TO BOOGIE who won comfortably first up (1000m) before run down latest when stepping up to today’s 1200m trip. Carrying only 0.5kg more in weight from gate one he maps to lead on his own & should be able to dictate before Tommy Berry puts the foot down in the straight. STROMBOLI draws well & did beat TIME TO BOOGIE home last start, main danger. Should MERITABLE be able to replicate his first up run in Listed company he’s a real chance however runs either side of that have only been average. Numbers: 4 – 8 – 2 – 3 Suggested Bet: TIME TO BOOGIE TO WIN RACE 5 CABALLUS has had a change of stable since we last saw him moving from the Waller yard to Bjorn Baker. He managed a win & a placing at his initial five start prep coupled with a couple of unlucky efforts. He’s trialled twice & looked good at the first, even better at the latest, happy to take a punt on him fresh. The consistent EPIC PROPORTIONS draws well, query is the step up in distance. Respect SOLIDER OF ROME as he is unbeaten & the trials have been sound. Numbers: 1 – 2 – 5 – 4 Suggested Bet: CABALLUS TO WIN RACE 6 2400m may find a few of these out. FIRST LIGHT is racing in peak form & is proven over the trip having won his past couple & 3 overall at that range. He’s up in the weights which I’m not a big wrap for however he just might be the strongest at the end. YARRAWONGA is an out & out one-pacer, bolted in a much easier race last start & will just do his thing up front here. LYRICAL GANGSTER has the right form, yet to race past 2000m & does rise a couple of kilos off the last start win. Numbers: 2 – 8 – 5 – 1 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 7 SUBSTANTIAL goes to Eagle Farm & should go close there, that removes one runner from what looks a race with only a small number of chances however there’s little between them. I’m with the second-up POWEFUL PEG who I feel has the best form line splitting Contemporary & Union Army last start. We know the latter has since won & I’m of the opinion the former is above average, second up/track & distance stats are good. EXCELLADUS & ROBUSTO come out of that ridiculously run race at Randwick a fortnight back in which EXCELLADUS prevailed, they can figure again. Numbers: 7 – 4 – 2 – 5 Suggested Bet: POWERFUL PEG TO WIN RACE 8 STEP ASIDE is ready to win again & this looks a perfect race for him to do just that. Very consistent he was extremely unlucky two starts back (should have won) before giving away too much start the latest when finding the line well. He gets an additional 100m this time around which will suit & rises only 0.5kg in weight. BUILLT continues to race well, he’s really turned the corner now & looks the main danger to his stablemate should there be one. ANYTHINK GOES is building to a win, well worth including. Numbers: 4 – 7 – 8 – 5 Suggested Bet: STEP ASIDE TO WIN RACE 9 TINTOOKIE & OUR KOBISON ran one/two in that order at Randwick last start & here they are for the return bout both second-up. OUR KOBISON was the better run as he raced without cover the entire trip & the margin between the pair was minimal, he’s 1.5kg better off at the weights & won’t be caught wide this time jumping from the inside gate. TINTOOKIE the hardest to beat, will no doubt improve with that run under the belt. I’d expect improvement from WAVERIDER BUOY, she’s a lot better than her last couple suggest. Numbers: 6 – 3 – 2 – 12 Suggested Bet: OUR KOBISON TO WIN RACE 10 Going to take a punt on the in-form CENTRESTONE who has done her most recent racing in Queensland. My concern is she gets back & this race doesn’t look to have a lot of speed on paper, the saving grace could be the inside draw which will enable J. Mac to hopefully settle in a closer than usual position early on. ITA certainly isn’t hopeless whilst the map leader GIVE ME JOY can’t be knocked form wise, she does face a tougher task here though. Numbers: 4 – 1 – 11 – 3 Suggested Bet: CENTRESTONE TO WIN ($4 or better) Market Market
