Scott Embry’s Sunday Toodyay Preview

Race 1

HELLO VENETA is a last start winner of a C1 1300 at Northam where she led and won by 2L and stopped the clock 1.5L faster than average in the process. That profiles as a really good form reference and racing pattern for a 52+ at Toodyay. Straight to the top or outside leader (Teabiscuit) and from there try to pinch it on the point of the home corner. BONONY ROCK won a 58+ 1300 at Kalgoorlie only five starts ago. Has been beaten double figure margins at her last two so might get missed in the market? Looks a nice race for her. EN PLEIN AIR hasn’t come up so far this campaign but has also been racing in considerable deeper races than this. Brandon & Lucy surely have a winner up their sleeve to justify the near 6 hour round trip. TEABISCUIT might be suited by this track.

Race 2

SHOOT TO FAME ran third behind I Never Dreamed and Gold Enigma at 16000 in Kal and then fourth behind Eternal Romance in a C3 1600 at Northam. Mid-prep trial, 35 days between runs and a race without any real speed and pressure where Jarrad Noske may even elect to take it up. There’s no Like Clockworks in this like her barrier trial! Think she might have found her race? MISS WALL STREET ran fourth in a 58+ at Kal behind Friars Legacy back in July. Since then she has been ‘okay’ with a couple of excuses here and there. The run two back she was outside her weight division on a Saturday but wasn’t disgraced beaten 3.5L by Olaf The Snowman, Phat Chaps and Chantel. Won’t find one weaker than this any time soon. ADMIRE THE GIRL didn’t get much luck last start. Was her best run of the prep to date. CHEROKEE MISS a watch with shades back on.

Race 3

ARNO RIVER only needs to reproduce the first-up run which saw him run second to Hot Chix Lane, beating home subsequent winner Jemconi. Sat wide throughout last start – forget he was even there. Looks a great chance for him to roll straight to the top and happy to play the speed horses at Toodyay, especially in the maidens. FIERCE RED ran second to Our Main Man (has maiden form and races at Belmont on Saturday in a 3 year old 1400) in a 400m jump out and then went to a 1000m barrier trial when ridden cold and beaten 3L (without luck). The winner of that trial Tex N Cee looks above average and the horse who finished alongside (Dip It In A Dream) won on debut. Market watch. CHE FIGATA has shown glimpses both for Danny Morton early and Lynette Watson recently. DAISIESFORTHELADYS next best if gaining a start.

Race 4

CATCH THE RED EYE should be hard to beat in a 52+ at Toodyay. Last start he was in a 66+ and was beaten 6L by horses like Hurricane Harley, Champagne Crusader and Snow God. He’s hard to catch but he’s a C5 winner and 0MWLY/60+ Grad placed. Winnable for him. MARS MISSION finally won a race at Carnarvon last start. That was his 17th run of the preparation, he was having his third run in a fortnight and he broke a winless streak that dated back to November 2023 at Rosehill Gardens. THE REPUBLICAN is a 10yo who hasn’t raced since October 2024 but the trial behind Barron Bill was good? FAMEUX is double accepted for Mingenew Saturday and Toodyay Sunday. Only 330km apart – you wouldn’t rule out the 24 hour back-up #BoyHillThings.

Race 5

CHANDRA finished off powerfully on debut behind Reginetta to finished second in a 1000m maiden at Northam. Second-up she heads to a maiden handicap at Toodyay and sees Chris Parnham heading up the Great Eastern Highway (or Tonkin or Toodyay Road I suppose) for just the one ride. From her trials it looks like she’ll get back so need to see some horse flesh make ground at some stage through the early part of the meeting, but if they can flash home late then watch for her. SOVEREIGN ROCK has speed to burn. Victoria Corver should have no troubles crossing these and leading, it’s just whether he can hold on late. RIBELLATO led and won a recent 1000m barrier trial at Belmont Park. ZINNIE CAN RUN was beaten a long way last start but that Pistone form is hot.

Race 6

CHERYLS SHOUT should be able to bounce back to form in this. So far in her life she’s won three races – all at Narrogin – and you’d have to say that Toodyay is similar (relatively speaking) to both Narrogin and York as a unique undulating circuit. First-up last weekend she finished less than 3L off them in a Westspeed Platinum 1000 and now she finds a 44+ 1100 that she can lead in her own right. Brilliantly placed and hard to beat even under 61kg. MRS KANGAROO has travelled far and wide. Dongara, Broome, Derby, Port Hedland, Newman, Junction and now Toodyay. Always runs well at this level. SCHUHBECK is 6 weeks between runs with Concussion Plates on. He’s an enigma. CHAMPAGNE CATHAY is still a maiden but gets it soft.

Race 7

GRANDADS ADDICTION is going great guns at the minute and is as tough as they come. He has backed up four times in his last six outings and is having his 19th run of a preparation that dates back to February 2026. Doesn’t know how to run a bad race, puts himself up close handy over the speed and will just keep whacking away. See no reason why he can’t win again now that he has figured out how to. ACTA NON VERBA went around in a Group 3 behind Aeliana and a Group 2 behind Angel Capital in Victoria. Fair to say the wheels have fallen off and he now finds himself in a Toodyay Cup. CAPABLE ANGEL won this race in 2025 as an even money pop with 56kg. Not going as well in 2026 but horses for courses. SOLO VEGA has been building all prep and knocking on the door.

Race 8

HOT LIKE CHILI ran second to Sister Mary (beating home dual subsequent winner and Cups contender Grandads Addiction), ran second to Wild Things (since 60+ Grad placed) and then finished 1.5L off them in a 54+ 2200. She’s been racing well all prep, she’s hitting a race at 1850m which is about her sweet spot and she’s jumping well enough to make use of the barrier. This is wide open but she’s one of the main players. TIFFS LAD led and won a 0MWLY 1700 back in June and then headed to Carnarvon and didn’t handle the hustle and bustle of dirt racing. Big watch coming back to the grass. POINT OF LUCK is hard to catch with that racing pattern. SIDE SHOW wasn’t bad three back behind Eternal Romance and Jason Lyon is a great booking (goes at 14%).
