Scott Embry’s Wednesday Geraldton Preview

Race 1

LIEUTENANT DUNBAR finished second in a C5 1100 at Northam three back and since then has finished 3L off Cable Rock (60+ Grad placed) and 2L off I’m Crafty and Return of the Mac in a relatively strong rating C5 1200. This is a nice middle ground for him, a c58+ 1400 and Troy Turner should have no troubles rolling his way straight to the top and staying out of trouble. Looks a great race for him on paper. PRINCE EPAULETTE isn’t an easy horse to ride but at his best he’s a C3 provincial winner. TANGO RHYTHM brings dirt form back to the grass but has been going well at Carnarvon and did show glimpses as a maiden in Albany when trained by Steve Wolfe. CANTILEVER is first-up, no trial but last prep did win a 58+ 1400 leading all the way.

Race 2

BEAUMONT MISS has only been to the races twice. 7L off Star Martini, Official Business and Gunning for Gold and then less than 2.5L off Champagne Talks, Cartier Glow and Prophecy Girl. Steps out to 1400m which is an unknown but strikes a field with far less depth and ability than what she has been racing against. KALLAHTI ran 4 days ago at Mingenew and after leading faded back into fourth beaten 3L. Rarely would that be the kind of form to turn around and win a maiden at Geraldton but this race is extremely thin and going off some of his runs last preparation behind horses like Caleb, Flaming Dragon and Blue Lupin you could see him winning this at an eachway quote. BESTON STREET was sparingly raced when last in work and Alby Bowtell is a genius with these tried types. DAISIESFORTHELADIES is fit and comes back in trip (again).

Race 3

HYPERREAL is the ideal horses for these country C2 races. Running into the likes of Cinque Stelle, Swansee, Ocean Goddess and Lash Out in provincial C3 company is lengths stronger than anything in this line-up and while 1400m is on the end of his distance range he should get an ideal run in the box seat. Follow the leader into the home straight and then hopefully push into the clear. QUICK COOKIE is on another quick spin, 7 days into Mingenew and then 4 days into Geraldton. She’s tough, she’s on speed and she’ll be there for a long way. Can win again. DUTCH POR headed down to Perth for a recent barrier trial and wasn’t knocked around. Capable type who can continue to work through his grades this season. MAGIC CARATS had grass form before heading to Carnarvon. Just needs to step.

Race 4

ALDEZOR had 9 starts in NSW and now heads to WA. First-up, no trial, tongue tie on, market likely to be the best guide but most of his better runs were actually at the shorter trips so wouldn’t read much into the fact that his last start was over 2125m. He doesn’t stay. Should get every chance and on opening day these maidens are largely guess work. ANDERSHINE was in the same trial as Diamas and really there wasn’t much between them. Chased hard behind a talented maiden type in Beyond Measure and didn’t weak blinkers in the trial. DIAMAS ran a couple of handy races last prep when first arriving in Geraldton and at least the Bowtell horses have had a trial. IL BELLO BEALS has now had 24 cracks at it.

Race 5

WEAPONIZE is 1 from 36 – hardly enticing, but he did run some ripper races last preparation in Geraldton C2 1100s and 1200s. This race is hard to get a handle on with so many first-up locals and in the end it’s the eachway price and more importantly the booking of Tash Faithfull that gets him over the line. Just has to stay in touch in the middle stages to give himself a fighting chance. ELLOVAMAN went around in a C2 at Kalgoorlie last start and was beaten under 2L. Can make the case that’s the strongest form reference but he did go around 50-1 and prior to that was beaten out of sight at Junction. Hardly compelling either. NOBLE TOUCH might want a tad further but interestingly hasn’t trialled like the other Bowtell runners on the day. DIVER DAN is still a maiden but expect the market will show him respect.

Race 6

PRINCE RAGNAR is worth consideration as a jump and run type on opening day. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the fence be hot at the first meeting of the year and with a couple of fitness building runs on the dirt in Carnarvon expect that he’ll be in front for a long way. Ebony Johnson seems to get them out of the machine and lets them run – which is exactly the way to ride this horse. Gives plenty of cheek. GOLD KEEPER is a ripper. He’s always there abouts and will land right place, right time. Rarely much between him, Prince Ragnar and Onemoretwomany when they have met historically. SNIPPY SEAN a watch at his first start for the new stable. 66+ 1200 placed last prep – that wins a c70+. ONEMORETWOMANY won 3x 70+ races last campaign and is pretty classy.

Suggested Bet – PRINCE RAGNAR WIN

Race 7

IN SITU won 3 on the bounce in Geraldton last season going from a maiden to a C1 to a C2 in quick succession. Had two runs last preparation – a 3 year old Saturday behind Ourgirlcanrun (could be Ascot Summer Carnival bound) and then in a C3 1000 at Northam when nothing went right and he was left wide and working throughout. Nice horse and should be able to work his way through into 58+ / 70+ this season as a 3 year old. ARCHENEMY has a real X-Factor about him. This is short of his best but he’s a proven weight carrier and is another who might be able to work his way through the grades this campaign. Meg Forrester’s team has been going really well in recent weeks too. PATS LAST BANG would be hard to run down if she crossed them from the outside gate. LEONOARDO DA GREY is competitive anywhere from 1100 to 1800.
