The Stocks Round 6: Fremantle and West Coast

Western Derby 62 was hyped up to deliver plenty and while Freo dominated majority of the stat sheet in an eventual 56-point victory to win their seventh Derby out of the past eight, there was just as much intrigue on the stat sheet. Here are the numbers that matter most for TABtouch punters heading into the next round.

Up

Jye Amiss

Jye Amiss continues to build his reputation as one of the league’s most dangerous young forwards, producing the first five‑goal haul of his career after a clutch goal in Gather Round last week to sink the Pies.

Heading into the game, Amiss had kicked 4 goals nine times in his 77 games (two of these hauls against the Eagles) but broke through for his maiden 5-goal haul from nine scoring shots.

The 22-year-old has rocketed into equal 7th in the Coleman Medal race, a serious statement from a player still early in his AFL journey.

Amiss is becoming a reliable goalscorer market anchor and after a slowish start to the season, his upward trajectory doesn’t look like slowing, especially with the attention needed to shown by team defences to Josh Treacy, Pat Voss and now Mason Cox.

Reuben Ginbey

While the scoreboard didn’t fall West Coast’s way, Reuben Ginbey quietly delivered one of the most disciplined defensive roles of the match.

Tasked with limiting Josh Treacy, Ginbey held the Fremantle forward to his lowest mark tally of the season being just 3. 

It’s the kind of performance that doesn’t always show up in highlight reels but absolutely shapes match outcomes and future matchup markets.

Keeping in mind Ginbey is still only 21 and playing above his height as a key position player, begging the question of much better he could be when assisted by Harry Edwards who remains sidelined due to concussion. It’s easy to see why Ginbey is becoming one of Andrew McQualter’s favourites.

Heath Chapman

Heath Chapman’s return to form has been one of Fremantle’s most encouraging storylines. Riddled by injuries in the past, Sunday was his sixth straight game with 15+ disposals setting a new personal benchmark, surpassing his previous best streak of four back in 2022.

For disposal‑based markets, Chapman is becoming a model of reliability… not bad for a player who is renowned for possessing lockdown defensive traits first and foremost.

Down

Archer Reid 

Archer Reid is battling through a tough patch, now goalless in four straight games.
While he’s expected to be far from an endurance freak, the 203cm forward/ruck is only Eagles player this season to record negative metres gained, being -4. He was on the bottom of the Eagles’ stat-sheet in the previous week against Geelong too for this department with only 23 metres gained that day.

For punters, it’s a slight red flag until his confidence returns and with Jack Williams averaging 2 goals per game in the WAFL this season, perhaps a spell beckons.

Jake Waterman 

Jake Waterman’s work rate remains strong, but the scoreboard isn’t reflecting it. The 2024-All Australian has kicked 3.9 across the last three weeks, leaving plenty of team momentum on the table. The medical team may have patched up his head after a nasty cut, but that couldn’t be translated into fixing his accuracy outside his one major from the top of the square just after half-time.

If he straightens up, he’s a value swing player. Until then, approach his goal markets with caution.

Andrew Brayshaw

Andrew Brayshaw has made a habit of torching West Coast over the years, but this Derby was different.
His 15 disposals marked his lowest tally in 15 career games against the Eagles, even lower than the infamous Andrew Gaff incident in 2018, which he still managed 16 disposals as a first-year player.

It was a rare dip from one of Fremantle’s most consistent ball‑winners, however last time he was restricted like this (Round 1 against Geelong with 14 disposals) he bounced back with 39 touches the next week. The 26-year-old won the Arthur-Leggett Medal for BOG in last year’s Len Hall Tribute game, so Carlton should be prepared for added motivation from the Dockers vice-skipper on Saturday night.
