Scott Embry’s Sunday Kalgoorlie Preview

Race 1

PANCHO’S PLACE returns to the care of Helen Harding after three runs down in Perth with Mack Hall. Off the back of a 2L 1000m trial win (over now 2x winner Espresso Time) he finished 3L behind Sunset Session and dual subsequent winner Modern Girl, 1.6L behind Diamond Warrior, Celestial Boom and subsequent winner Phat Chaps, and then was beaten a long way behind The Rocket. Back to 1100m, Natika’s 1.5kg claim is a luxury and he maps well close handy at an eachway price. OCEANETTA hasn’t fired a shot at the races but has shown glimpses at trials. Pike rides so she’ll be artificially short. VIVALDA was good first-up but horrendous second-up. Lost all trust. COONGAN KID makes his debut in a set of blinkers and ran third to a nice one at trials recently.

Race 2

BATISTA was first past the post at his Peter Fernie debut at Kalgoorlie on 7 June but has now been DQ’d. Since then he has been kept safe in the market in C2 and C1 company and now again becomes eligible to head back into a maiden. He’ll naturally find this much easier and from the draw he should be given every chance by Tash Faithfull. Unique circumstance where you can back a ‘winner’ in a maiden, and at an eachway price. LORD ARCADIA will be all the rage. Last prep in a 58+ at Geraldton he finished second and then he ran third in a staying maiden. He’s going to be short for a horse ultimately wants further. LORD MOMO is really one paced. He just grinds away. WRONG SONG will likely lob three deep cover and try to wind up into the contest.

Race 3

TIGER TANK put in a couple of moderate performances a month ago but has certainly bounced back in recent weeks. Third in a C1 behind God’s Cross and Eightyseven Lad (beating home subsequent winner Cosmic Gem) and then split Espresso Time and Marcos who both race on Saturday at Belmont Park. Nicely placed by Neville Parnham into a Country C2. GOLD LILY got the job done last start to break her maiden at start number 11 over 1200m. She now steps into a C2, rises 2.5kg but does gain the services of one William Pike. MORF has been set a task recently from extremely wide gates. Much kinder draw/map for him here. COULDABEENAHANDBAG like most of Paul Tappers is going really well but continuing to run minors without winning.

Race 4

SIMPLY ROYALTY is a last start winner this track/distance and more or less this grade. Technically she goes from C1 to C2 but the line-up is near identical and provided she gets clear galloping room on straightening she should be hard to hold out. Showed a glimpse of above average ability on debut and then lost her way for a little while. Hopefully she’s back now and can build off that confidence boosting win. ALOTTA FIGHTING might be destined to remain a C1 horse for life! He doesn’t know how to run a bad race but starting to think he also doesn’t want to have his photo taken? SAINTY CULLITY has done a good job since stepping out of maiden company. KUTENAI jumped out of the ground first start in blinkers but couldn’t reproduce last time out.

Race 5

IDEALLY will be the second choice of the Fernie runners from a market perspective but think provided they can make ground on Sunday that she’s in this with an undeniable chance. Given a 4 week freshen between runs and from 2132 back to 1600m she’ll be hitting the line hard late. THE CANDY KID led and won a 2132 two starts ago and then dropped back to this 1600m starting point most recently when third to The Jester’s Son and Monty Zoomer in the Tatts Cup. Obviously would have preferred if this was a 1760 for him but going undeniably well. GIBRALTAR GOLD has always raced like a mare who would get a mile. Query is likely to be price: the market seems to love her but she’s got Pads on and not convinced she’s going at her absolute best? GOLD ENIGMA won well last start.

Race 6

SCIENCE DEGREE was simply no match Don’t Wait For Luck last start. Without him in this line up and without that much other speed and pressure it looks a really nice race for him to again find the top and kick hard into the corner. Going around at eachway prices and consistently running eachway races and if he can pinch a cheep section middle stages then he’ll be hard to get late. ALTAR BOY joins Jody McLaughlin’s stable from Darwin after winning an 1100 and running second in a 1200 at Alice Springs. Nearly impossible to line that up as a form reference but the fact that Pike has accepted the ride does take the attention. RAINLINE won the Kambalda Cup in style and she gets a bit of weight relief here. MORE LIKELY resumed a winner at 1300m in a 58+ under 60kg. Will the sprint come out of his legs quickly though?

Race 7

LILLIAN should be a nice mare for the Goldfields Series. She’ll improve again into the Boulder Cup and the Kalgoorlie Cup but this 1760 on the way through looms as a nice race for her. If the stablemate has any bad luck down on the inside then she can make a race of it. She’s versatile enough to be ridden to any emerging track pattern and she’s got a fitness edge on OPPORTUNISTIC who showed glimpses of his old self at stages last preparation. After failing to complete the course in the AJ Scahill Cup in 2025 he had 6 months off and last preparation had four runs, where he improved steadily in each outing. Barrier 1 could be sticky for him? GINGER BAKER is accepted for both the Farnley at Belmont on Saturday and the Coolgardie Cup on Sunday at Kalgoorlie. Must be respected if he starts here having won this race in 2025. OUTSPOKEN LAD is as honest as they come.

Race 8

DANCEWITHME has really come on since Peter Fernie stepped her into this 58+ grade and got some well deserved weight relief. Barrier 15/15 looks nightmarish on paper but surely there’s a 3 and 4 deep line building from the 600? If she’s in that and not too far off them on straightening then she’s going well enough to win this at nearly double figures. STYLIN was below her best last start. She was on a 2.5 month freshen after flopping as a $1.85 pop on 7 June and was sent out at $1.70. She had 60kg, sat in the box seat, pushed her way into clear galloping room and looked the winner but almost peaked on the run in the last 100? May have needed it. TWIST OF GOLD won that race and was a nice change of fortunes. RIPPER RUPERT brings Perth form to the Goldfields.
