The Everest Power Rankings: Week 1

1. Santa Ana Lane
2018 Everest: 6th
Last Start: April 28, The Chairman’s Sprint Prize – Sha Tin (4th)

A proven Group 1 performer and undeniably at least the equal of any sprinter in the land. His recent trial at Cranbourne says he has come back as good as ever and deserves his place near the top of the market.

2. Redzel
2018 Everest: 1st
Last Start: April 27, Victory Stakes (2nd)

After incredibly winning the first two runnings of The Everest his recent trial wearing blinkers suggests it may be foolish to overlook him as he attempts the hat trick. Peter and Paul Snowden have done an amazing job at peaking him for grand final day throughout this career and his next Grand Final will be Everest Day.

3. Classique Legend
2018 Everest:
Last Start: April 13, Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1st)

The new kid on the block and the quality of his performances to date indicates he will progress to the elite level. Not hard to mount a case he could be undefeated and by securing an early slot can be prepared with one race in mind.

4. Arcadia Queen
2018 Everest:
Last Start: November 24, Kingston Town Classic (1st)

Potentially one of the best horses in the country now under the care of Chris Waller could be the X Factor of this year’s Everest. A devastating Group 1 winner of the Kingston Town over 1800m as a three-year-old filly at her most recent start, her recent trial at Rosehill indicates she is coming to hand well for a spring campaign. Kept fresh for The Everest she is sure to be hitting the line as strongly as any other runner.

5. Pierata
2018 Everest:
Last Start: April 20, All Aged Stakes (1st)

Now a Group 1 winner and a horse with a devastating finishing burst. He looks to be progressing well in preparation for his return to the track and should be suited by what is likely to be a solid tempo in The Everest.

6. Sunlight
2018 Everest:
Last Start: April 6, T J Smith Stakes (3rd)

A speedy mare that graduated from her three-year-old year with honours by winning the time-honoured Newmarket down the Flemington straight defeating Osborne Bulls. Trialed in outstanding fashion at Randwick recently and capable of riding a hot speed and still giving a kick.

7. Enticing Star
2018 Everest:
Last Start: December 1, Winterbottom Stakes (2nd)

Another crossing the Nullarbor and joining the Chris Waller stable with The Everest in mind, and her recent barrier trial indicates she has settled in well to her new surroundings. However, she probably needs to have improved during her recent break to threaten some of the runners more fancied in the early betting.

8. In Her Time
2018 Everest: 7th
Last Start: March 9, Newmarket Handicap (6th)

A high quality mare lining up for her second Everest after narrowly missing a slot and winning the Sydney Stakes as consolation in the year of the inaugural Everest. Recent trials indicate she is coming to hand well but may need to improve to a level she has not yet achieved to be a winning chance.

9. Osborne Bulls
2018 Everest: 3rd
Last Start: May 11, Doomben 10,000 (2nd)

After finishing third in last year’s Everest, employing brave tactics out wide on the track, a victory this year would be some form of redemption. Although victory at Group 1 level has eluded him so far he has regularly produced performances worthy of a win at that level and would be a worthy contender once again.

10. Alizee
2018 Everest:
Last Start: August 10, Missile Stakes (1st)

Now a five year old she appears to have returned to racing as good as ever, possibly even better. She appears to excel when kept on the fresh side although is also capable of training on into a preparation. If she secured an Everest slot, she has the quality to win it.

11. Nature Strip
2018 Everest:
Last Start: May 11, Doomben 10,000 (4th)

An incredibly fast galloper now in the care of Chris Waller, and his recent trial behind Redzel gives an indication that he may be learning to relax a little better during his fast work. If he is able to conserve some of his energy in the early stages of his races, he could be even more dynamic than we have seen previously.

12. Libertini
2018 Everest:
Last Start: May 11, Woodlands Stakes (1st)

A potential wildcard for a remaining Everest slot, the three year old daughter of I Am Invincible has untapped potential. Her two recent trials and an impressive exhibition gallop indicate she is ready to return to racing in terrific order. Her only defeat to date came at the hands of Bivouac who resumed at Caulfield recently in outstanding style to further enhance her Everest credentials.
