Scott Embry’s Sunday Port Hedland Preview Posted on July 2, 2023July 2, 2023 | Posted by Scott Embry RACE 1 GALIBA beat Weld in a 68+ 1200 two starts ago and meets him half a kilo better at the weights. Last start she finished 2L off Land Of Valens and Sixpence Spent but never gave up the chase. 1300m suits him and he’s drawn to get the run she needs. WELD can be a frustrating horse to follow. He’s always there abouts but he can loom and not go on with it at times. Finished in the money at all 5 runs at Port Hedland but yet to actually win one. SIXPENCE SPENT is quick but the last 100m may stretch. KING OF PLANETS another who may be looking for the line late (although did win over a mile at Pingrup). Numbers: 3 – 2 – 1 – 4 Suggested Bet – GALIBA WIN RACE 2 CAPE PRIDE had the saddle slip two starts ago and then was three deep the trip outside the leader last start. Austin Galati on a big plus. A few of these may be suspect at the end of 1400m and he looks like one who will keep coming. Just needs luck from the outside gate. EXILE TED jumped last start and gave a lot of cheek when eventually run down by King Hallowell. If he steps, he can again take it up and from there he would be hard to beat. NITRO LAD did run second to Commands Respect in a C1 at Port Hedland two starts ago. LOYAL ROMANCE showed plenty of speed last start in a C1 at Roebourne. Numbers: 2 – 1 – 3 – 7 Suggested Bet – CAPE PRIDE WIN RACE 3 MAGIC OF ZEUS should only improve on his first-up run behind Weld in a 67+ 1400 at Roebourne. He is now second-up, drops in grade back into a 56+ and is drawn to kick through and lead. There’s a few handy Pike runners in this but hoping that he’s too tough for them late. AMBER HIGHWAY and AL MAGICO are both talented NW animals who can continue on to win in the top grade. Not much between them but you’d think that Kyra Yuill had first choice = Al Magico. KUTAYHA could be a Cups contender if handling the dirt. Numbers: 2 – 5 – 3 – 1 Suggested Bet – MAGIC OF ZEUS WIN RACE 4 KALAKAUA ran really well last start behind Almaher Man and prior to that was solid in defeat behind Finest Clobber. Stays in C3 grade, clearly handling the Port Hedland style of racing and while Austin Galati jumps ship to ride for Kevin Mahoney, Jess Valenti is a more than adequate replacement rider. Looks ready to win. SEA WAIF joins a new yard and has always seemed like a mare who would be hard to run down rolling along on the dirt. We’ll find out. DECOY BELLE has been loving life in Carnarvon. Just needs to get away cleanly form the inside. TRISUEM was a big improver last start. Numbers: 5 – 6 – 1 – 2 Suggested Bet – KALAKAUA WIN RACE 5 KING HALLOWELL and SALCHINO are both last start maiden winners. KING HALLOWELL gives the impression that he’ll continue to hold form and he has a favourable race pattern for dirt racing. Not a horse who is going to win races by margins but suspect he’ll pick up a few in the region. SALCHINO was far too good for them at Roebourne. Interesting to see how that form lines up. WHO’S YOUR MAMA doesn’t want much further than 1200 but she’s racing consistently well. LUNA NOBEL showed great speed last start. Numbers: 1 – 5 – 2 – 8 Suggested Bet – KING HALLOWELL WIN RACE 6 KELLY’S LASSIE has been racing well all season in the NW. Winer of a C1 1200, a C3 1200 and then placed last start behind War Warrior in a 56+ 1200. Troy Turner heads up to Port Hedland again and the last time he rode the mare he lifted her over the line with 60kg. She’s going well enough to win again. WAR WARRIOR was simply a different animal last start. Jumped, rolled and never looked like being run down. Can he reproduce? RAKIURA is quick and will be in front for a long way. DEBIT CREDIT toyed with them at Carnarvon. Maybe 1200 is on his limit? Numbers: 4 – 2 – 3 – 1 Suggested Bet – KELLY’S LASSIE WIN RACE 7 CALLING CARD had been looming into his races and peaking on his run until last start when he ran right through the line and recorded a deserved win. Even with the wide gate and weight on his back think he can go back to back. LAUTRE won on a quick back up from Friday to Sunday last start. Tough. ELAFELLA should only improve for the run. WAR CLASS is going well. Numbers: 1 – 7 – 2 – 3 Suggested Bet – CALLING CARD WIN Quaddie (Race 3 – 6) 2,3,5 1,2,3,5,6 1,2,4,5,8 2,4 Market Market
