Chris Nelson’s Saturday Doomben Preview Posted on April 9, 2026April 9, 2026 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 Racing at Doomben on Saturday will be on a good rated surface with a sunny weekend to look forward to, summer like temperatures in the low 30’s expected. The youngsters get the meeting underway, can’t say I’m wrapped in the form lines of the raced brigade & should there be a newcomer with decent ability they could get away with the race. That’s the way I’m leaning putting Kelly Schweida’s first starter (3) HELL OR HEAVEN on top, he’s trialled nicely enough & comes up with the pole draw, market leads will be all important however I’d say he’s ready to go. (1) UNLOADING closed off well on debut to win & should only be further improved whilst the consistent (2) EVER SO READY must be included also. Numbers: 3 – 1 – 2 – 8 Suggested Bet: Follow any market support for HELL OR HEAVEN. RACE 2 Small field where nos.1, 3 & 8 figure to set the speed. (4) ÉCLAIR AWESOME was all out of luck at Eagle Farm last Saturday when held up at a crucial stage in the straight, once out & running she closed of well however the bird had flown. Happy to stick with her here. (1) WEIGALL TIGER just failed to see out the mile at Eagle Farm last start after looking all over a winner, gets the claim again & this tighter track plus the good deck suits. (3) RAMP IT UP continues to race well, relishes this track & trip. Numbers: 4 – 1 – 3 – 8 Suggested Bet: ECLAIR AWESOME TO WIN (small bet). RACE 3 (13) PHENOM caught the eye running home strongly first up here at the end of 1350m. That was his first run for the new yard & whilst I wouldn’t be having my last on him he should be well suited by the step up in distance. (6) READY FOR THE TRIP should be ready to fire, fourth run back & improving nicely. Wide draw for (7) SIR WINNIE however with a positive ride early he can offset that & in his current form has to be included. Numbers: 13 – 6 – 7 – 1 Suggested Bet: PHENOM EACH-WAY. RACE 4 Interesting 3yo affair over the 2020m trip where we have a couple of southern visitors in (2) FALCON LAIR & (3) ZULEIKA who appear to have an edge over our locals. I’ll lean to the latter who beat all bar the winner at Launceston in the Tasmanian Oaks before an easy kill at Mount Gambier. She’s certainly getting her frequent flyer points up & can continue on her winning way. (2) FALCON LAIR is very consistent, solid Hawkesbury win last start & gets a good draw for top jockey Ryan Maloney. (7) CASTELLO GRANDE caught the eye running on late last start & may be the pick of the locals. Numbers: 3 – 2 – 7 – 8 Suggested Bet: Box up top 3 selections in exotics. RACE 5 Topweight (1) ICARIAN DREAM the class runner in this race & should she bring anything near her ‘A’ game surely she goes very close to winning. Placed in the Vanity at Flemington & the Gold Edition at Eagle Farm within her past 4 starts behind Sheza Alibi & Grafterburners, what price either of those runners in this race! (3) SMEXY was ok first up, might need one more however won’t be far away. (8) PEARLS IN JUNE an interesting runner, scratched from a very suitable maiden midweek to go around here. Numbers: 1 – 3 – 8 – 4 Suggested Bet: ICARIAN DREAM TO WIN. RACE 6 (8) SAVAGERY VIBE is yet to take on 1350m, 1200m has been her limit to date. She’s hit the line very strongly her past couple suggesting to the eye she can run it out well, the inside draw will ensure a soft run with her only likely issue gaining clear running in the straight. (18) GRAMMAR LAD has come back in very good form this prep, luckless first up, good running on against the tempo second-up before everything panned out last time. (2) HELL TO PAY draws well for in form apprentice Chelsea Baker who will be looking to make full use of it. Numbers: 8 – 18 – 2 – 6 Suggested Bet: SAVAGERY VIBE TO WIN. RACE 7 (16) WITHOUT PARALLEL is only lightly raced with a very good strike rate. She resumes here having yet to be beaten fresh & has won both lead-up trials in good fashion. With Jett Newman’s claim she’ll carry no weight & although likely up on a hot speed she should prove tough to beat. (8) ESTRONDO was very good running on late last start, that was 1200m so the drop back 90m doesn’t really look overly suitable however should they fly along in the race which is definitely possible he’ll be closing in. Another couple of backmarkers (15) FRAGILE LOVE & (14) LAYDOWNLILY could be suited also. Numbers: 16 – 8 – 15 – 14 Suggested Bet: WITHOUT PARALLEL EACH-WAY/Saver ESTRONDO. RACE 8 This last race of the day is the best race of the day with a number of above average types returning to the track. I’m with the race fit (8) EXOTIQUE MISS who ran a sound third in the King Of The Mountain recently. Get the feeling she’s looking for the step up in trip which she gets today & with Olivia Webb’s claim gets in nicely at the weights. The resuming (4) WALSH BAY resumes, built a picket fence last prep before a couple of defeats where nothing went her way. (9) CASTILLIAN has struck form, in a race with low speed will likely roll forward once again. Numbers: 8 – 4 – 9 – 1 Suggested Bet: EXOTIQUE MISS EACH-WAY. Market Market
