Scott Embry’s Saturday Derby Preview Posted on July 17, 2025July 17, 2025 | Posted by Scott Embry RACE 1 FAST JOHN finished second at four consecutive maidens in Broome from 1000m to 1300m and then last week got shuffled back through the middle stages and was unable to build any momentum into the race at any stage. On the 7 day back-up from Broome to Derby and deserves one more chance. PRINCE VITALITY finished second to Mr Hollywood last week and beat home Fast John by a margin in the process. SIGN THE PAPERS won at Marble Bar leading all the way and then never travelled at any stage at Port Hedland. Can bounce back. WHAT SHOUT can lead and give cheek. Numbers: 3 – 1 – 2 – 6 Suggested Bet – FAST JOHN WIN RACE 2 IMA WILD GIRL won a C1 1300 at Northam and a C3 1600 at Northam before finishing second in the Laverton Cup las season. Has been building recently at Broome and this race at Derby looks winnable for her. Leaving the senior on is a show of intent too. DEAL OBTAINED led and won at the opening meeting. Hasn’t been sighted since. Hard to run down if left alone in front. ROMMELS JEUNEY is 6 weeks between runs as he heads North with Jake Casey and Bonnie Palise. CITY OF SIN is a query at the trip. Numbers: 1 – 2 – 4 – 6 Suggested Bet – IMA WILD GIRL WIN RACE 3 AREDUET had her first start for new trainer Anthony Barton and was $9 into $3.60 in betting when finishing third behind Granite Rock and Fast John. Doesn’t quite run out 1200m so back in distance to 1120m suits and she’ll be improved for the dirt experience. JATS has a bit of pace and if they can use it to their advantage to stay out of the kick back he should go well for Darryn Pateman. HARD TO TOP has been thereabouts in the Broome maidens all season. ZORROS AIM finished second at Leonora on the dirt last year. Numbers: 4 – 1 – 6 – 3 Suggested Bet – AREDUET WIN RACE 4 ON THE CHARGE sat three deep the trip at Broome to win a C2 1200 and then last start was a beaten favourite but nothing went right whatsoever and his race was over after two strides. Just needs to step and he’ll be very hard to beat in this. GUNNERSIDE looks the leader from barrier 1 kicking through and controlling the speed. Makes him a legitimate danger. TORQUED UP won well at Carnarvon and wasn’t disgraced behind Royalzel and Simply Rosso in a much better race last weekend at Port Hedland. DODGE EM will make a great dirt horse if he jumps a bit more consistently. Numbers: 4 – 6 – 1 – 3 Suggested Bet – ON THE CHARGE WIN RACE 5 ISOLA BAY hasn’t won a race for quite a while but at his peak he was going so well in Broome that Rob Gulberti took him to Darwin where he ran second in a BM68. His first-up run last weekend at Broome was much better than it reads on paper, he travelled well but just didn’t have any room to move. Kept out of trouble he’s a sharp improver. CHOIXWAY has found his feet on the dirt and drops 2kg on a dominant last start win. CHARLETON EDDIE is the class conveyance and is at a winnable weight after the 4kg claim for Giaan O’Donnell. ROEY CLAM a contender if leading. Numbers: 3 – 2 – 1 – 4 Suggested Bet – ISOLA BAY WIN RACE 6 LUCKY LANDING stepped out to 1780m at Broome last week and led them rolling from the 600. He never gave anything a look in and comfortably turned the tables on Lautre from their previous encounter over 1615. He stopped the clock 6.5L faster than average suggesting he’ll get the 1800 of the Derby Cup. LAUTRE beat him home two back and get a 1.5kg weight swing from last Saturday to try and turn the tables. Getting off the fence will be key. LETS SEA is building and needs this distance. ARTIES COMET will likely need a run or two to come on. Numbers: 3 – 1 – 2 – 4 Suggested Bet – LUCKY LANDING WIN Market Market
