Scott Embry’s Saturday Derby Preview Posted on July 18, 2024July 18, 2024 | Posted by Scott Embry RACE 1 KALGAN broke his maiden at Broome over 1300m when able to find the top and out grind them. He then went to a C1 when beaten almost 10L but behind Hide The Oreos (subsequent winner) in a race where they’ve gone 6L quicker than average. Looks the winner of this Class B Trophy Race. COOLEX was run off his legs first-up and second-up. Think he runs second. SPOKEN LIKE A DIVA and FLYING SURPRISE fight out third and fourth. Numbers: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 Suggested Bet – KALGAN WIN RACE 2 FRIES WITH THAT was wide throughout last week in the Hide The Oreos C2 1600 which was again run at ridiculously strong speeds. The Hide The Oreos form is excellent and that should put him in a good position to run a big race here on the minimum. Like the way he’s going. YANKEE LIMA lead and won a 58+ 1400 at Broome only two starts ago and if Jess Gray is allowed to find the front he’ll be very hard to run down. DANEHILL STORM can show plenty of speed from time to time. FEELS HOT won last start but they were going up and down on the same spot over the last 400. Numbers: 5 – 1 – 3 – 4 Suggested Bet – FRIES WITH THAT WIN RACE 3 ORTABEAROCKSTAR should have sufficient speed to punch up underneath runners and lead from the inside gate. Fresh at Broome over 1100m was run down on the post by Private Sapling and then finished right behind The Lyricist last start at 1200m. Should be there for a long way. THE LYRICIST has promised to win a maiden all season and continues to knock on the door. TOPAZ put in her best run of the preparation at Marble Bar. BOUTIQUE SESSION has her first run for Anthony Barton. His team go super first-up. Numbers: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 Suggested Bet – ORTABEAROCKSTAR WIN RACE 4 DEEP POINT won back to back races at Broome in a C1 1200 and a C2 1200 before finishing third behind Disco Donut and Master Buddha last start. Got a long way back in a slowly run race and was never going to figure. Look for him to be ridden aggressively early here to settle closer. BIN SHALAA has the best grass race form of any horse in the field. The query is her first start on the dirt but no doubt Anthony Barton has targeted this meeting with his resuming team. MASTER BUDDHA beat home Deep Point last start in an encouraging first run for Kayla Farrell. ROSE OF DENMARK next best. Numbers: 2 – 1 – 3 – 4 Suggested Bet – DEEP POINT WIN RACE 5 DARK CITY is simply too quick for them at the minute. Has had three runs for Darryn Pateman and won all three of them, including with 63kg two back beating dual subsequent winner Hide The Oreos. Last time out he carried 61kg and won by 4L beating Disco Donut who is in this field. Jump, run, hold on late over 1150. CAPTAIN SHARMANE is another Anthony Barton first starter on dirt. You’d be shocked if he left Derby without at least one winner. PRINCE RAGNAR comes on quickly second-up on dirt. DISCO DONUT next best. Numbers: 1 – 4 – 2 – 5 Suggested Bet – DARK CITY WIN RACE 6 VEVINSKY is quickly finding his feet on the dirt and will become a nice Cups proposition over the coming weeks starting here with the 2024 Derby Cup. Settled second last week behind Tinsnip and never gave up the chase at any stage. The last two 70+ races at Broome have been dominated by the Sean & Jake Casey newcomers and they’ve set wildly fast sections early and middle stages. GAMBLERS GOLD ran second to No Change and then skipped the Broome meeting last week, no doubt to target this. Big danger. ARTIE’S COMET is going super on the dirt. Just got attacked last week. FLOAT OUR BOAT is trying hard. Numbers: 2 – 1 – 3 – 4 Suggested Bet – VEVINSKY WIN Quaddie (Race 3 – 6) 1,2,3,4 1,2 1,4 1,2,3 Market Market
