Scott Embry’s Saturday Broome Preview Posted on July 31, 2025July 31, 2025 | Posted by Scott Embry RACE 1 FIRE THE GUARD made his Gulberti Racing debut in a C2 1000 three weeks ago when running second behind Ocean Outlaw. He’s now back into a maiden and drops 1kg as well. Always going to be a chance/risk of being caught out deep but hopefully he can march into the race and prove a bit too good. 22 start maiden – wouldn’t want to be taking shorts about him though. WICKED ONE goes quick but so far pops on straightening. ZORROS AIM, AREDUET, HARD TO TOP, JATS and THE KINGS WERD are all through a weak maiden at Derby. Numbers: 1 – 4 – 3 – 7 Suggested Bet – FIRE THE GUARD WIN RACE 2 ON THE CHARGE looks really well placed by Kelvin Moore. Sat three deep the trip to win a C2 1200 three starts back and then was solid enough in this grade across at Derby with a senior behind Berry Berry Good beating home Torqued Up. Drops 4kg after the engagement of Natika Riordan and races a few who are struggling on the surface. MAKE YOUR POINT was a scratching last Friday and at the previous meeting when there was no available rider. Likely to be very fresh: jump and run? OCEAN OUTLAW won a very similar race to this two back. STAR HOSTESS a chance if the track is as leaderish as it was last Friday. Numbers: 1 – 6 – 4 – 9 Suggested Bet – ON THE CHARGE WIN RACE 3 FRIES WITH THAT finally drew a barrier last Friday took full advantage of the massive on-pace bias and while that’s usually a reason to knock horses who win at those sorts of price when you assess the opposition this race 8 days later is vastly similar, if not weaker. ROMMELS JENEY headed to Derby for his first run of the NW season and was around the mark in 58+ grade last year at 1400/1600. Definite danger. MR HOLLYWOOD is always hard to follow because he gets so far back. CANGGU hasn’t fired a shot yet in Broome which is surprising. Numbers: 2 – 7 – 1 – 8 Suggested Bet – FRIES WITH THAT WIN RACE 4 CLOSE TALKER headed to Broome to join Jody McLaughlin and last Friday raced in a 58+ 1100m when holding her own behind Universal Playboy. On the quick back-up she drops back in grade into a C2, is better for her dirt experience and only rises 1kg with the Sharni Webster claim. Can park wide and keep coming. PRIVATE SAPLING was crunched in betting last week and the punters were spot on. Was a 25 start C1 who the market labelled – unreal. Can win again no doubt. DAWN RETREAT and RODNEY OH RODNEY ran second and third behind him last week and DAWN RETREAT did a great job to make ground at a meeting it was near impossible to do so. Numbers: 1 – 4 – 6 – 8 Suggested Bet – CLOSE TALKER WIN RACE 5 COMMISSIONS and PLATO OR PLOMO went head to head last Friday over 1615m and when you review that meeting and realise that no winner came from further back than third in running it makes the effort of PLATO OR PLOMO look super. Meets COMMISSIONS 1kg better and coming back to 1435m gives him a chance at turning the tables. If COMMISSIONS led and won again it wouldn’t come as a surprise. Track may have suited but he was attacked from a long way out. THE TOP BAR an improver if he jumps. IMA WILD GIRL likely has to breeze. Numbers: 2 – 3 – 6 – 4 Suggested Bet – PLATO OR PLOMO WIN RACE 6 LUCKY LANDING was set alight mid-race by Rosie Mahony two back and simply outstayed them. Finished third in the Derby Cup as a beaten favourite but finds himself back in a 58+ 1780 at Broome. Right race for him. MIRRORSCHINO looks just about ready to produce his best at Broome. Good effort last week beaten under 3L in the Cable Beach Caravan Park Cup and finds a race where if he jumps well enough Holly Nottle could nearly lead on him. LETS SEA went to the Derby Cup and was beaten out of sight, however, his previous run behind Lucky Landing was great. DO IT RIGHT is knocking on the door. Numbers: 1 – 4 – 3 – 6 Suggested Bet – LUCKY LANDING WIN RACE 7 STRIKING FELLA is on trial at 2070m, it’s likely to be right on his limit, but it’s hard to argue with the way he’s going. He probably should have won two back (luckless) and he won impressively last week. Going super. MAGNABURMA will also be stretched at the end of the distance but shouldn’t have to burn as hard to lead this week. GAMBLERS GOLD continues to race well, has done for the last few seasons, just seems to loom and not quite finish off at Broome. LAUTRE drops 6kg out of the Derby Cup and was matching motors with Magnaburma prior. Numbers: 4 – 8 – 5 – 11 Suggested Bet – STRIKING FELLA WIN Quaddie (Race 4 – 7) 1,4,6 2,3 1,3,4 4,5,8,11 Market Market
