Runner by Runner: Karrakatta Plate

1. Ex Sport Man (56.5kg)

Trainer: Steve Wolfe
Jockey: Shaun McGruddy
Barrier: 1

Winner of the Pinjarra Magic Millions from well off them at 1200m; a race which profiles similar to a Karrakatta Plate as a high speed, high pressure 6-furlong juvenile sprint. Was only moderate in his Albany trial and then was a huge drifter in the Perth Stakes when opening $2.15 and jumping $6. Finished 3L off He’s Gold, Storm Whisper and Diamond Blue but sectionally ran well enough in an on-speed dominated race. Gets weight swings on all three.

2. He’s Gold (56.5kg)

Trainer: Ted Martinovich
Jockey: Mitchell Pateman
Barrier: 4

Has burst onto the scene in the last few months. Resumed over 1000m when finishing a floundering ninth some 5L off Spin The Knife but since then has gone from strength to strength and is improving with every outing. Dominant all the way SWP winner at 1200m before fighting off Storm Whisper in the Perth Stakes to record his first Listed victory. Jump and run type who showed some serious ticker last start.

3. Storm Whisper (56.5kg)

Trainer: Neville Parnham
Jockey: Steven Parnham
Barrier: 5

Unsuccessfully plunged in the Perth Stakes. Opened $6 and jumped a very well supported $2.60 favourite. Worked across from his outside draw, sat in the breeze and loomed ominously at the top of the straight when looking like he had He’s Gold’s measure. Couldn’t get past him in the run to the line and was beaten a nose. Meets He’s Gold 1.5kg and Ex Sport Man 2.5kg worse at the weights.

4. Spin The Knife (56.5kg)

Trainer: Luke Fernie
Jockey: Jason Brown
Barrier: 8

Has shown glimpses of brilliance at two career outings. Shock debut winner at over 40-1 when breezing outside speedy filly Star Soprano in a race run 5L faster than 2 year old 1100m average and showed huge grit and deamination when fighting off He’s A Sizzler in the last 50m. Went back from a wide gate in the Supremacy Stakes and caught the eye late when recording a very similar final 600 to talented fillies Hoi An and Liwa. Real X-Factor horse.

5. Diamond Blue (56.5kg)

Trainer: Ted Martinovich
Jockey: Jade McNaught
Barrier: 13

Maiden galloper who comes into this off back to back minor placings behind stablemate He’s Gold. From what we’ve seen in their last three encounters there looks to be a length or two between them and at set weights it’s hard to see Diamond Blue breaking his duck in the Group 2 feature.

6. Policiere (54.5kg)

Trainer: Daniel & Ben Pearce
Jockey: Joe Azzopardi
Barrier: 14

Quality filly who has hardly put a foot wrong in her short career. Missed the money twice in her life, on debut when three deep the trip working and first-up in the Supremacy when the entire on-speed brigade hit a brick wall at the 150. From the Gimcrack Stakes Policere, Liwa and Heavenly Waters get 2.5kg on the majority of rivals. Looked a big player prior to the barrier blow.

7. Heavenly Waters (54.5kg)

Trainer: Roy Rogers
Jockey: Lucy Warwick
Barrier: 6

Was chasing a long way out in the Gimcrack yet still finished off well. Has had a fair bit of racing over an elongated preparation (with a freshen up) and when you consider she’s done the majority of her racing conceding weight to key rivals as penalty for winning the Crystal Slipper on debut she’s been brave. Forgotten filly.

8. Hoi An (54.5kg)

Trainer: Roy Rogers
Jockey: Clint Johnston-Porter
Barrier: 17

Eye catching late in the Supremacy Stakes when clocking a near identical final 600 to the winner Liwa before peeling off the fastest last 600, 400 & 200 in the Gimcrack to score. Considering the traffic jam she found herself in and the weaving passage home to record the splits she did with an interrupted passage shows she’s the real deal. Won soft in the end but will need to go to a new level from the barrier.

9. Fatale Femme (54.5kg)

Trainer: Sean & Jake Casey
Jockey: Jordan Turner
Barrier: 11

Hasn’t returned the same filly in her second campaign. Beaten 3.5L first-up in the Supremacy Stakes when ridden aggressively from three back the fence to bullock her way into open running but faded late. Hung badly in the Gimcrack when eased down to finish 30L off the second last horse. Trialled to Stewards Satisfaction Monday at Belmont when winning by 2.5L.

10. Liwa (54.5kg)

Trainer: Simon Miller
Jockey: Patrick Carbery
Barrier: 9

Sneaking under the guard of the market which is rare for a Simon Miller filly (or horse in general). Won the Supremacy Stakes at 25-1, ran a big fourth in the Gimcrack at 17-1 when recording the fastest L800 & L200 and looks to be screaming out for 1200m. With the right run, off the back of a strong tempo, she’s definitely dangerous.

11. Flying Missile (54.5kg)

Trainer: Neville Parnham
Jockey: Chris Parnham
Barrier: 12

Brings alternate form to the feature having avoided the lead up races. Resumed in a blaze of glory when justifying the $1.30 quote in a 2 year old mid-week maiden winning by 3L eased down. Travelled strongly in the run, let down impressively with a sharp turn of acceleration turning for home and was notably the only leader on the program to win. Neville Parnham identified this filly as the best of his three in a post-race interview.

12. Ultimate Command (54.5kg)

Trainer: Neville Parnham
Jockey: Brad Parnham
Barrier: 7

Resumed in the Gimcrack off the back of a 400m jump out. Raced very keenly in the early and middle stages and was unable to fight them off late in the race. Blinkers removed in an attempt to settle her down and given her exposed race form you’d think that 1200m is on her limit for now. Gets across quickly to position up.

13. Michelada (54.5kg)

Trainer: Simon Miller
Jockey: William Pike
Barrier: 16

Comes into the Karrakatta Plate first-up after an emphatic 3L trial victory at Lark Hill. William Pike would have had the choice of a number of options and he sticks with the power of the S.A Miller yard. Only beat maiden and unraced rivals in that trial but looked ready to go. Another who has shades removed for Grand Final Day. Draw means she’s ridden for luck?

14. Six Carat (54.5kg)

Trainer: Paul Jordan
Jockey: Craig Staples
Barrier: 10

Has had a 400m jump out and a 1000m trial in preparation for this acid test. In Monday’s 1000m Belmont Park trial she sat on the tow ball of Fatale Femme and struggled to go with her at the top of the straight, under the whip. Surprised punters when winning at 30-1 back in November but did beat Liwa and Diamond Blue that day. Triple figures.

15. Pat’s Got Sass (54.5kg)

Trainer: David Harrison
Jockey: Jason Whiting
Barrier: 2

Is the biggest 2 year old you are likely to see in WA; stands over 17 hands tall, tips the scales at over 530kg and has a bigger head than Krishane Warren. Was the talk of the town on debut after trialling better than Policiere at Lark Hill and justified the hype with a dominant victory by almost 3 lengths. Drew a lemon in the Gimcrack and was forced to sit three deep working throughout. Still loomed turning for home and looks to have unbelievable raw natural ability. Jason Whiting confirmed rider and blinkers changed to visors.

16. Sneaky Chance (54.5kg)

Trainer: Trevor Andrews
Jockey: Peter Knuckey
Barrier: 15

Was nominated for a 2 year old maiden race on Wednesday at Bunbury but didn’t accept suggesting she’ll take her place in the final field. She has raced without luck so far and comes into the Karrakatta off an honest 7th in the Gimcrack. Sneaks in ahead of Be Optimistic by $100 in prize money earnt.

SELECTION: PAT’S GOT SASS

She looked a special talent at trials when monstering talented and exposed form filly Policiere before dominating midweek rivals on debut. Three deep the trip no cover in the Gimcrack and still finished third. Provided she holds her spot in running she looks a massive eachway chance.
