Deane Lester’s Caulfield Best Bets Posted on October 19, 2018 | Posted by Deane Lester Deane Lester’s Best Bets RACE 3 NO.6 EDUARDO EDUARDO is a lightly raced sprinter showing great promise for the Sarah Zschoke stable and looks the one to beat in the Caulfield Sprint (1000m). The five year old has only had four starts for two wins and two placings including a brave last start 2nd behind I AM EXCITED in the Gilgai Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on October 6. He will appreciate dropping back in distance, dropping in weight and continues to improve with racing experience. He is well up to this class and appeals as the best bet of the day. RACE 5 NO.6 VERRY ELLEEGANT Former New Zealand filly VERRY ELLEEGANT is a recent addition to the Darren Weir stable and appeals as a great winning chance when she contests the Ethereal Stakes (2000m). The daughter of Zed won two of her three starts in her homeland before a luckless 3rd behind the subsequent Thousand Guineas winner AMPHITRITE in the Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on October 6. She should be improved by that outing, looks ready to step up in distance and appears drawn for a cheap run. She is on a path to next month’s VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington and should record her third career win here. RACE 8 NO.13 HOMESMAN The Caulfield Cup (2400m) is traditionally a very open race and this year’s edition is no exception. I have been a fan of HOMESMAN for some time now and think that this is a feature race in which he can run very well. He was a group 1 winner of the Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield two starts back before an even run when finishing 7th behind BENBATL in the Caulfield Stakes (2000m) at October 13. He’s had a strong preparation for the race and will appreciate a big weight drop on his recent runs. He is drawn for a sweet run and represents value in a tough race.
