Chris Nelson’s Saturday Doomben Preview Posted on August 14, 2025August 14, 2025 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 Racing at Doomben on Saturday should take place on a track near enough to good, plenty depends on what happens with forecast storms Thursday night. We open up with a 1600m Benchmark 70 where I’m with the very much in-form (4) DRACENA who is unbeaten at her two outings this prep. Drawn wide she’ll roll forward with only Aolani on the map likely to also push on, from there she’ll get her chance to bring up the hat trick. (3) AOLANI can hold down second aided by the claim for Emily Lang & likely soft run whilst (6) VICTORY FLAME can improve off a wide run last start, is quite versatile may end up going forward also? Numbers: 4 – 3 – 6 – 2 Suggested Bet: DRACENA TO WIN. RACE 2 I’m not one to generally get involved in these restricted distance races however (2) ZOOLOGY does look well placed to win. Good winner here two back (great ride) before placing in the much stronger Grafton Cup last time out, with the claim & good gate there’s plenty to like. (5) THE RIGHT WAY maps to lead all alone, will give a sight whilst (3) AGE OF KINGS surely improves at this level. Numbers: 2 – 5 – 3 – 8 Suggested Bet: ZOOLOGY TO WIN. RACE 3 At this early stage there looks to be plenty of pace engaged in this race which might set it up for something to get over the top late? The resuming (11) JEMOMA ALPILAGE fits that mould however she will need things to pan out. Solid in metro grade last prep she’s had the benefit of a trial & just needs to be within striking distance on the turn, should she end up a long way back her chances will be nil. (3) CERTAINLYCAN looks best of the on paced runners from the good draw. Suggest (10) SURPRISE HONEY can figure also, her career best win came here three runs back & she’ll strip a fitter mare off the first up second. Numbers: 11 – 3 – 10 – 2 Suggested Bet: JEMOMA ALPILAGE EACH-WAY (small bet if not a big drifter). RACE 4 (5) SIMPLY AMAZING comes out of the opening race to run here & will be aiming to make it 4 wins on the trot. She’s really hit her straps since joining the Desleigh Forster stable & has proven to be versatile winning from on or off speed. Suggesting from the inside draw today they will make full use of the gate & go forward. (8) OCEAN ZAR holds an impressive second up record & ran well fresh, BIG danger. (3) CATAHOULA brings the Sydney form, did have every chance last start however may find this a little easier, definite respect. Numbers: 5 – 8 – 3 – 9 Suggested Bet: SIMPLY AMAZING/OCEAN ZAR TO WIN. RACE 5 Found this race pretty much impossible to work out & I’ve spent plenty of time trying to sort it! (5) IDYLLIC AFFAIR is only lightly raced & in good hands, a win & second at only two outings to date plus there was plenty to like about her recent Gold Coast trial when just coasting to the line. (2) BENEFITSOFMINE draws well & does have race fitness on his side, he may not end up being the best horse to come out of the race however is one of the best placed. The maiden (12) PIGGIETALES steps up plenty in grade however I did like her closing Sunshine Coast effort, she’s one to throw in exotics at big odds. Numbers: 5 – 2 – 12 – 4 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 6 Keen to see the resuming (10) OUROBOROS strut his stuff here from an inside gate. He’s only had the two outings since coming from Victoria bolting in the first at Eagle Farm over 1000m. Disqualified from his second win he again bolted in this time up to 1200m however that obviously doesn’t count. He looked very good winning a recent Deagon trial with plenty in the tank! (13) SPYWIRE & (15) THE BLADE bring strong & consistent Sydney form lines, both capable to giving the top tip a run for his money. (14) TRUE AMOR in the mix as well however draws poorly. Numbers: 10 – 13 – 15 – 14 Suggested Bet: OUROBOROS TO WIN. RACE 7 Going with some value here putting the resuming (9) NAVAL TRADER on top however I’m well aware I may be going off a run too early. Very good running on fresh last prep over 1350m he only gets 1200m this time however his first up record is impressive plus he did look good just coasting home in a recent trial, market leads will be all important. (5) GOLDSBOROUGH is flying, took him a long time to win again & then he goes out & makes it two straight, three here is not out of the question. (1) STEADY READY faces a task from wide out however map wise should be able to get across early on. Numbers: 9 – 5 – 1 – 3 Suggested Bet: NAVAL TRADER EACH-WAY (small bet). RACE 8 Leading trainer Tony Gollan has a very strong hand in this race with the stable newcomer (2) FLEETWOOD & the consistent (3) BRERETON. (2) FLEETWOOD is one of the ex-Godolphin runners & haven’t they been going well in their new stables, his trial win here recently was very soft & although I’m not overly keen on the weight I’m going to stick with him. (3) BRERETON likes this track & trip, drops in grade however rises in weight & will give a start. Freshened up (4) ZOUPERB in the mix. Numbers: 2 – 3 – 4 – 6 Suggested Bet: FLEETWOOD TO WIN. RACE 9 Keeping a close eye on the market moves around the resuming (2) BATTLEFIELD for Barry Lockwood as he’s more than capable fresh & the stable isn’t scared of having a bet. He’s yet to win first up however I did like his recent trial & he will be strong at the end of 1350m. (1) TALTARNI FIELDS is a model of consistency, yet to race over this trip however I did note him raising another effort near the line last start when second. On pacer (4) SLIPPIN’ JIMMY in the mix also. Numbers: 2 – 1 – 4 – 7 Suggested Bet: BATTLEFIELD EACH-WAY (small bet) Market Market
