Chris Nelson’s Saturday Doomben Preview Posted on March 16, 2023March 16, 2023 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 HOLD ON HONEY has been very well supported right from when first markets were posted for this race and I’m firmly in his corner. Drawing an inside gate at this starting point around Doomben on firm ground is a fair head start, fitter for the first up run he should lead and skip away early in the straight. Not discounting ZUMA CALIFORNIA’s chances, overall is better suited at 1200m however whilst fresh can still be effective over the shorter trip. Look for PUTONTHEREDLIGHT late. Numbers: 6 – 3 – 14 – 2 Suggested Bet: HOLD ON HONEY TO WIN. RACE 2 MOHICAN HEIGHTS is not an easy horse to catch however he is racing quite well at the moment and might be able to get away with this. A winner two back he then ran a sound race in Listed company at Rosehill before being held up at Eagle Farm last start where he should have definitely finished closer. NAVAJO PEAK parks up on the speed, a winner over the trip he was gallant last start with the big weight, drops 7kg on that run. MUBARIZ flashed home latest, he’s not the easiest to catch either though. Numbers: 1 – 7 – 5 – 3 Suggested Bet: MOHICAN HEIGHTS/NAVAJO PEAK TO WIN. RACE 3 There’s a few difficult races here on Saturday and this is certainly one of them. I’m going wider than most putting NO GOING BACK on top, thought he was very good at Eagle Farm running 3rd to the since won again The Red Kite setting a solid speed yet giving plenty right to the line only really being collared inside the final 100m. There doesn’t look a lot of pace on this map suggesting around Doomben he might be harder to get past. BOTTEGA the definite danger, claim helps. Numbers: 6 – 1 – 3 – 7 Suggested Bet: NO GOING BACK EACH-WAY RACE 4 Absolute lottery this race. BUYING TIME has been costly and I’m not sure I want to launch into him as favourite. MISS TAMBO has been consistent all prep, draws a good gate and doesn’t need to give away any big starts, if close enough to strike she will be strong late. NIPOTINO comes out of a stronger race in Sydney last start, right in this. Numbers: 14 – 19 – 4 – 11 Suggested Bet: Watching on only. RACE 5 TUMBLER RIDGE appeals on an each-way basis here. He’s got the big weight however his form is better than, he can let the speed go early and likely find a good spot. He did have his chance fresh when no match for his stablemate however this is an easier task. ROMAN AUREUS may well score a good run from the inside draw, this is the sort of race he bobs up in. STUTTERING and BIRRIECART both push on, the former has an awkward alley, the latter will improve second up and has no weight. Numbers: 1 – 5 – 8 – 9 Suggested Bet: TUMBLER RIDGE EACH-WAY RACE 6 Fair to say had ISOTOPE drawn a gate she’d be the clear top tip as although out of the placings for quite some time she’s been going around in much stronger races, mainly Group 1’s. She’s come up with the complete outside alley which will see her give away a big start over the 1110m scamper. I’m leaning SWEET MARGO MAY first up, she’s a very consistent mare who always gives 100% and her recent trial placing was good behind the flying Zoustyle. FETCH box seats again, she rarely draws a bad gate! Numbers: 5 – 1 – 6 – 14 Suggested Bet: SWEET MARGO MAY EACH-WAY RACE 7 Expecting good speed in the 2yo Jewel with many runners capable of going forward. I’ve settled on RUPERT’S HOUSE on an each-way basis as he maps so well whereas I’m just not sure where some of these others may end up in the run. Yes, he wasn’t’ the best to jump at his only start which was when winning here on debut and we certainly don’t want a repeat of that however it was super win circling the field to then lead and keep going all the way to the line. TRIFLING has done nothing wrong and will be suited by the likely strong tempo. Numbers: 4 – 9 – 8 – 1 Suggested Bet: RUPERT’S HOUSE EACH-WAY RACE 8 The 3yo Jewel is extremely wide open. Steady Ready is super quick and will be looking to burn across from the wide gate, that should create plenty of tempo. Thought SPIRIT QUEEN’s run in the Prelude was better than any other, problem is she comes up with a wide draw and will likely give away a big start, at the odds maybe a few dollars each-way. ALL THAT PIZZAZZ won the Prelude in good style, still have my reservations about him at a strong 1200m in this company however he draws better than most. SHE’SGOTTHEBOOM draws a gate, that might be all she needs to get back to her best form. Numbers: 16 – 1 – 11 – 2 Suggested Bet: Wide exotics, include as many as you can! RACE 9 It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a race in Brisbane open at around $7.00 the field! I’m going with BOLD AND LUCY who comes into the race nice and fresh having not raced for 5 weeks. She likes this track and will be charging to the line late, hopefully she doesn’t give away too much start. DA PARTY GAL didn’t see much daylight in the straight when resuming, she’s another who can let down with a big finish. The winning chances certainly don’t end there though. Numbers: 9 – 15 – 19 – 10 Suggested Bet: BOLD AND LUCY EACH-WAY Market Market
