Chris Nelson’s Saturday Randwick Preview Posted on January 2, 2026January 2, 2026 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 We race once again at Randwick in Sydney on Saturday. The track will be good & the rail goes back to a 1 metre position throughout. The meeting gets underway with a 2yo maiden where the majority are on debut & there’s been some impressive trial performances amongst them. (6) PROFITABELLE was an interesting trial, not the best to jump she sat back last before zooming down the outside to score, we don’t see last to first performances in trials very often, just get the feeling Bjorn Baker has her primed for a debut win. (2) KNIGHTSBRIDGE closed nicely into second spot behind (8) THYME TO GO in his recent trial & has the race experience, note the synthetic hoof filler gear change, never ideal. Real ‘watch the betting’ affair this one. Numbers: 6 – 2 – 8 – 5 Suggested Bet: Market the best guide here. RACE 2 Big numbers to go around in this week’s Highway over the mile. Tough to tip against last start winner (1) NAVY BUOY who went straight to the front here over this trip & never looked like being beaten as he put a gap in his rivals down the straight to win by well over 3 lengths. With the claim for Will Stanley he’ll carry only 0.5kg more & draws to lead or box seat. (4) MOUNT BONA looks a promising type who is building an impressive strike rate, another to draw well she showed a tidy turn of foot when finding clear running to score at Rosehill. (5) SACRED MISTRESS can figure in the placings once again. Numbers: 1 – 4 – 5 – 10 Suggested Bet: NAVY BUOY TO WIN ($3 or better). RACE 3 This week’s Midway is over the 1100m trip. I’ll be having something each-way (4) ZARAGOZA whose had a little freshen up (3 weeks) coming back 100m from his last start at Rosehill when game after racing wide. I’d expect Nash Rawiller to make full use of the good draw & have him a lot closer in the run, the addition of blinkers may also sharpen him up early on. (6) CLANCY the obvious danger having won & placed at his only two outings, trialled nicely just needs a little luck early on from the wide gate. (16) SPICE BABY in the mix also, another with a wide gate though. Numbers: 4 – 6 – 16 – 13 Suggested Bet: ZARAGOZA EACH-WAY. RACE 4 Found this a very difficult race, there’s certainly no standout they are very evenly matched with many coming out of the race won by (10) WILLIE OPPA here 2 weeks ago. That was run very strongly in front which suited the winner, based on that he likely now needs further so happy to take him on this time around. (6) PERFECT JUSTICE doesn’t win out of turn however is consistent & brings a different form line, something small each-way the go. (9) CLIMB THE LADDER was good last start, include. Numbers: 6 – 9 – 10 – 3 Suggested Bet: PERFECT JUSTICE EACH-WAY (small bet). RACE 5 I’ll lean to the consistent (10) ALABAMA FOX who gets in with only 52.5kg & looks very well-suited rising nothing in grade & dropping 1.5kg in weight. She’ll strip fitter for that last start second which was her first for 2 months. (1) ROLLING MAGIC aided by the 3kg claim looks nicely placed also & may turn out to be the strongest opposition whilst (7) PRETTY POWERFUL & (6) ALABAMA STATE won’t be far away. Numbers: 10 – 1 – 7 – 6 Suggested Bet: ALABAMA FOX TO WIN (black figures). RACE 6 Impossible to miss the first up run handed in by (2) CHANGING COLOURS at Rosehill early last month. Parked back in the field she was held up near the 200m mark before flashing home late between rivals to beat all bar the winner & was in front soon after the line. Rising to 1400m looks very suitable & she’s yet to miss a placing second-up. I & others were keen on the chances of (1) JUST LULU last start, she put in a shocker on face value however was found to be suffering cardiac arrythmia, her prior form was good, she can bounce back strongly. (11) CINSAULT & (12) BELLA CORAZON solid chances also. Numbers: 2 – 1 – 11 – 12 Suggested Bet: CHANGING COLOURS EACH-WAY. RACE 7 (9) DOLLAR MAGIC the safe way out in what looks a very open race, many questions however very few obvious answers. She’s a very consistent mare who although yet to win here has placed 5 of her 7 attempts 7 should be peaking at her third run back from a break. Keep the resuming (4) GOODLUCKTOME very safe, he raced well in Queensland last prep winning successive races at Eagle Farm & Doomben, trials ok & is yet to miss a placing fresh. (3) CIGAR FLICK is impossible to catch however will be running home strongly at the end of this, second-up record is a concern. Numbers: 9 – 4 – 3 – 8 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 8 Apart from the 61.5kg there’s plenty to like about the second-up (1) COOL JAKEY’s chances here. Strong to the line first up he gets to his preferred distance & his second up record is terrific having won 3 of his 4 attempts. (7) STEP ASIDE can be hard to catch however having enjoyed every favour last start he got the job done & maps nicely from the good draw. (10) MIDNIGHT OPAL could be ready to improve; he’s been off the boil a little however from the low draw should get plenty of favours. Numbers: 1 – 7 – 10 – 3 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 9 I’m with the first up (7) CANDLEWICK who is unbeaten when fresh winning both attempts to date. She goes around here for a new stable (Joe Pride) having formerly been with the O’Shea/Charlton yard & although out of the money her last couple prior to the break they were in much stronger grade & she’s trialled well for her return this afternoon. (2) HAWKER HALL clearly the toughest to beat on form & the map however the big weight has to be of some concern? (9) MASSIRA’s last start win rated well & from the good draw should gain a cosy run. Numbers: 7 – 2 – 9 – 1 Suggested Bet: CANDLEWICK TO WIN. RACE 10 (9) FULL HAO gets well down in the weights with the claim here just as she did when a Rosehill winner two starts back over the 1800m trip. She looked stiff last start when held up in the straight & the step to 2000m looks ideal. The very consistent (6) ÉCLAIR ENCORE just keeps running good races without winning, another well placed with a claim whilst the lightly raced (17) DEAL ‘N’ DASH has good upside & is in the right yard. Numbers: 9 – 6 – 17 – 3 Suggested Bet: FULL HAO EACH-WAY. Market Market
