The Scout: EURO 2020 Day 5

Hungary vs Portugal

Portugal open their European Championship defense against Hungary at the Ferenc Puskas Stadium in Budapest.

Hungary successfully qualified by defeating Bulgaria and then Iceland with midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai (RB Leipzig) the shining light. Unfortunately the talented 20-year-old has been ruled out of the competition due to injury.

The defending champions have won seven of their last nine internationals, and in their last match before the tournament they destroyed Israel 4-0. Starring in this match was Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) who scored a double and has had a fantastic year of football.

Cristiano Ronaldo is always the man most likely when Portugal are involved, but Fernandes has emerged as a more than capable running-mate. The attacking midfielder scored 30 goals across all competitions this season, and looks the value in a game that should present plenty of chances.

France vs Germany

The biggest game of the tournament to date sees two powerhouses do battle; France taking on Germany in Munich.

France look the stronger of the two sides on paper, and are in incredible form having won six of their last seven matches, including 3-0 wins over Bulgaria and Wales. This French side have such an impressive squad, but their attack is what sets them apart in Karim Benzema (Real Madrid), Kylian Mbpappe (PSG) and Antoine Griezmann (Barcelona).

Germany have been less than impressive (by their standards) over the last 12 months, with long time manager Joachim Low set to step down after the tournament. They’ve suffered some recent uncharacteristic results, including a 2-1 loss to North Macedonia in April and a 1-1 draw with Denmark in June.

For France, Antoine Griezmann is in ominous form, scoring eight times in his last 11 appearances for club and country. He also happens to be one of the best goal scorers in the history of the Euro’s, just three goals shy of the all-time record.

France are in unbeaten in their last 18 international matches and have not lost to Germany in their last five matchups. With Group F being the toughest in the tournament, an early win could prove invaluable. I think France get that in Game 1.
