Deane Lester’s Flemington Best Bets

RACE 3 NO.5 INDEPENDENT ROAD

INDEPENDENT ROAD has returned to racing in good form and represents a value each way play when he tackles the 3+4YO Benchmark 70 Handicap (1720m). The four year old resumed with a solid 4th over 1300 metre at Cranbourne on October 29 before another strong finishing 4th behind UNFAIR DISMISSAL over 1500 metres at Mornington on November 18. He has a very good 3rd up profile at his past two preparations with placings at Flemington. The Dabernig/ Hayes stable have elected to put blinkers on INDEPENDENT ROAD who has drawn for a great run with Jye McNeil in the saddle and looks ready to produce his peak run for the preparation.

RACE 8 NO.11. SOMERSET MAUGHAM

The Danny O’Brien stable have enjoyed a good preparation with SOMERSET MAUGHAM who appeals as a strong winning chance again when he runs in the Benchmark 84 Handicap (1800m). His only two unplaced runs in Australia have been when the son of Galileo has been tried at 2000 metres and beyond so dropping back in distance here looks an ideal option. He has the capacity to race near the lead, make his own luck and kick strongly over the final stages. Elite rider Damian Lane takes the ride and SOMERSET MAUGHAM is one of the better bets on a tough Flemington program.

RACE 9 NO.5 MACROURA

The best bet of the day is MACROURA when she tackles the Fillies and Mares Benchmark 78 Handicap (1100m). The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained filly has been placed at both runs this preparation, firstly over 1100 metres at Rosehill on October 31 before a luckless third over 1200 metres at Kembla Grange on November 21. Her form last preparation includes victories over the talented colt WILD RULER and smart filly MARBOOSHA which are superior formlines to her rivals in this race. She should now be at peak fitness, looks drawn for an ideal run down the Flemington straight and makes strong appeal to record her 4th win from just 7 race starts.
