Deane Lester’s Caulfield Best Bets Posted on April 1, 2021April 1, 2021 | Posted by Deane Lester RACE 5 NO.12 VOWMASTER The Chris Waller trained gelding VOWMASTER returns to Melbourne after an unsuccessful Sydney campaign and can bounce back to winning form when he contests the Jack Elliot Handicap (1100m). The son of Written Tycoon was brilliant in two Melbourne wins last campaign and trialled well at Flemington recently suggesting that he is a superior horse going in the Melbourne direction of racing. He is drawn for a sweet run, goes well for rider Michael Walker and represents great each way value in a very competitive race. RACE 6 NO.6 ALFA ORO Exciting sprinter ALFA ORO kicks off his autumn campaign when he runs in the Robert Taranto Handicap (1000m) and has trialled strongly in preparation for his return. The five year old has won six of his nine starts to date and raced through the grades in fine style last campaign winning five races on end. This race sets up very well for him with a natural leader in SARTORIAL SPLENDOR to lead him in the early stages. He should make his own luck and ALFA ORO looks one of the best bets of the day. RACE 9 NO.9 SHANDY SHANDY is another that is building a fine winning strike rate and looks the one to beat again when she runs in the Geoff Murphy Handicap (1600m). The Ellerton/ Zahra trained mare has won four of her past five outings including a tough first-up win over 1400 metres at Sandown Lakeside on March 17. She will be fitter for that run, flies second-up and drops in weight from a good draw with champion rider Damian Lane in the saddle. There looks good speed in this race which suits SHANDY and she appeals as a good bet to send the Caulfield punters home on a winning note. Market Market
