Aussie hopes head to Royal Ascot 2026

Australia’s sprinting firepower will be on full display at Royal Ascot, with a select trio of elite performers flying the flag across the United Kingdom’s prestigious carnival from June 16–20.

Headlined by international star Asfoora, multiple Group 1 winner Overpass, and premier sprint mare Joliestar, expectations are high that the southern hemisphere can make a major impact on the global stage.

Here’s how the Aussie contingent shapes up across the five-day carnival.

Tuesday June 16: King Charles III Stakes ft. Overpass and Asfoora

The Group 1 King Charles III Stakes has become a target for Australian sprinters, and in 2026, Overpass and Asfoora will represent serious winning chances.

Overpass heads to Ascot as a seasoned Group 1 performer with a reputation built on speed and $12 million in earnings. Half of that prizemoney was claimed at Australia’s Ascot in Perth, where he has won both the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes and Quokka twice.

Trained by Bjorn Baker, Overpass has been in strong form this preparation, winning two lead-up trials before running a solid fourth in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes behind Joliestar.

Regular rider Josh Parr retains the mount, a key positive given their established partnership, including elite-level successes earlier in his career.

Overpass is ideally suited to the straight-track conditions and possesses the early speed required for Royal Ascot’s 1000m test, making him a genuine top-three contender if he brings his Australian form overseas.

Standing alongside him is Asfoora, already a Royal Ascot winner and one of the most accomplished Australian sprinters to compete internationally. She famously won this race in 2024 and has since enhanced her reputation with further Group 1 victories in Europe, including the Nunthorpe Stakes and Prix de l’Abbaye.

Now based in Europe for a sustained campaign, Asfoora will again be steered by leading jockey Oisin Murphy, who has been integral to her success abroad.

While her early 2026 runs have been below her peak, they’re widely viewed as fitness builders, and her proven Ascot record – and explosive finishing turn of foot – means she looms as one of the premier chances to reclaim her crown.

Saturday June 20: Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes ft. Joliestar

The 1200m Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes will showcase Australia’s standout sprinter of the season, Joliestar, who arrives in career-best form.

The Chris Waller-trained mare has been dominant throughout the Sydney Autumn, completing a hat-trick of major wins. She took the Group 2 Expressway Stakes, Group 1 Canterbury Stakes, and most recently enjoyed a brilliant victory in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes.

That performance secured her fifth Group 1 title and stamped her as one of the world’s leading sprinters heading into Royal Ascot. Joliestar will be ridden by champion jockey James McDonald, whose familiarity with the mare has been pivotal to her success during this preparation.

Importantly, she is expected to arrive fresh, which has historically suited Australian sprinters at Royal Ascot. Her sustained speed, tactical versatility, and ability to handle high-pressure Group 1 fields make her a leading contender. She’s already an early favourite in Futures markets.

If she reproduces her TJ Smith performance on the international stage, Joliestar has every chance to deliver another major Royal Ascot success for Australia.

Generosity and Lady Of Camelot ruled out

Australia’s Royal Ascot contingent was originally set to be deeper, but two notable names Generosity and Lady Of Camelot have been ruled out.

Former WA mare Generosity will remain in Australia after connections opted to send the mare for a spell after her Autumn campaign. Trainer Chris Waller indicated the decision was made to prioritise her long-term prospects, particularly targeting high-value races during the Aussie Spring.

Meanwhile, Lady Of Camelot’s withdrawal came under unfortunate circumstances. The talented Golden Slipper was injured by a stingray during a beach swim, ending her racing career. Lady Of Camelot collected almost $6 Million in prizemoney over her 14-start career, and we wish her a restful retirement.

While these absences reduce the size of the Aussie cohort, with Overpass, Asfoora and Joliestar leading the charge, the nation still boasts a talented trio capable of making a significant impact at Royal Ascot 2026.
