Wide open field promises thrilling Metropolitan Posted on October 3, 2025October 3, 2025 | Posted by TABtouch This Saturday, Randwick plays host to the Group 1 Metropolitan Stakes, a 2400m staying test that has drawn a capacity field of 18 runners. With a mix of seasoned internationals, emerging stayers, and proven Group performers, the race is shaping up to be one of the most open Group 1 contests of the Spring Carnival so far. Let’s take a look at the main hopes. The lightly weighted Birdman emerged as the early favourite. After a strong win in the Kingston Town Stakes, he looks well-placed to complete the double. With Kerrin McEvoy aboard and a favourable weight, Birdman is a genuine threat. Fresh off a win in the Newcastle Gold Cup, Soul Of Spain is flying and steps up to Group 1 company with confidence. His winning streak and strong closing sectionals make him a serious contender, especially with Zac Lloyd in the saddle. A proven international stayer, Vauban carries topweight and comes into the race with a point to prove after a flat run last start. Trainer confidence remains high, and a bounce-back performance could see him right in the finish. Etna Rosso has finished strongly in his last two starts. His closing sectionals have been among the best in the field, and from barrier 2, he’s well-positioned to make an impact at double-figure odds. Irish import Changingoftheguard has been building nicely and looks ready to peak. With Ethan Brown aboard and a solid barrier draw, he’s one to include in exotics, along with Piggyback. The winner of Colin Stephen Quality last weekend, Piggyback is on the quick back-up and sits on the minimum weight. He’s progressive and could surprise at odds. Other notable contenders include the consistent and tough Arapaho who may be tested under the weight, lightly raced Athabascan and More Felons, who has drawn wide but has class on his side. Our expert tipster Chris Nelson is backing Etna Rosso each-way, noting his strong finishes and underrated form. He expects Vauban to bounce back, and believes Birdman is the most genuine of Chris Waller’s many runners. Several runners – including Changingoftheguard, Vauban and Birdman – will be closely watched on Saturday, not only for their chances in the Metropolitan Stakes but also for how they shape up as genuine Melbourne Cup contenders. A strong performance at Randwick could go a long way toward securing their place in the final field at Flemington on November 4. With a full field and no clear standout, the 2025 Metropolitan Stakes promises a thrilling contest. Whether you’re backing the favourites or chasing value, this race is a key stepping stone toward the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup later this spring. Market Market
