Runner by Runner: All-Star Mile

1. Kolding (59kg)

Trainer: Chris Waller
Jockey: Hugh Bowman
Barrier: 7

Epsom and Golden Eagle winner so no doubting his class. Fitter for two runs back from a spell and suited stepping up to 1600m, but still needs to prove he’s comfortable around the Caulfield circuit despite the pattern of the day not suiting him last start.

2. Black Heart Bart (59kg)

Trainer: Lindsey Smith
Jockey: Brad Rawiller
Barrier: 6

Multiple Group 1 winner here and another that wasn’t suited by the pattern of the day when resuming in the Futurity Stakes. He boasts an impressive second up record but interestingly is yet to win at 1600m. As an older horse he is unlikely to be improving and would probably need to return to his best form to be a winning chance.

3. Fierce Impact (59kg)

Trainer: Matthew Smith
Jockey: Craig Williams
Barrier: 12

One of the best 1600m gallopers in the country taking out Victoria’s two premier handicap events over that trip last spring. Has run well at his two run back this preparation, being arguably the unlucky runner in the CF Orr Stakes first up, and then running well behind Te Akau Shark last start. Should be close to peak fitness and looks a leading contender.

4. Regal Power (59kg)

Trainer: Grant & Alana Williams
Jockey: William Pike
Barrier: 3

Backing up after running well in the Australian Cup over 2000m last weekend. Faces the challenge of coming back to 1600m but is unbeaten at that trip with one of his victories being the Group 1 Railway Stakes last year. He should be hitting the line strongly and has the class to win.

5. Streets Of Avalon (59kg)

Trainer: Shane Nichols
Jockey: Ben Melham
Barrier: 11

Suited by the pattern of the day recording his first Group 1 victory in the Futurity Stakes over 1400m last start. Despite the pattern there was still plenty of merit in his performance and his racing style tends to keep him out of trouble. He is likely to make his own luck once again but his record of one placing from four attempts at 1600m is a significant query against this caliber of opposition.

6. So Si Bon (59kg)

Trainer: David & B Hayes & T Dabernig
Jockey: Luke Nolen
Barrier: 9

Enigmatic galloper who rode the speed and battled solidly behind subsequent Group 1 winning stablemate Fifty Stars in the Blamey Stakes over this trip. He also ran well over 1600m behind Fierce Impact and Fifty Stars under handicap conditions in the Cantala Stakes last spring. Has the talent to run well but looks tested by the WFA conditions.

7. Mr Quickie (59kg)

Trainer: Phillip Stokes
Jockey: Damien Oliver
Barrier: 4

Kept fresh for this and was responsible for an outstanding performance when resuming over 1600m in the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington in September last year. Has been trialling in the manner of a horse that is primed to run well first up and he is sure to be storming home over the concluding stages.

8. Star Missile (59kg)

Trainer: Greg Eurell
Jockey: Craig Newitt
Barrier: 2

Talented galloper fitter for a couple of recent runs and wasn’t suited when forced to do quite a bit of work in the run last time. Winner at 1600m and has been placed here, but would need to improve significantly on his best performance to date to be competitive against this class of opposition.

9. Melody Belle (57kg)

Trainer: Jamie Richards
Jockey: Opie Bosson
Barrier: 5

New Zealand’s star mare and a ten time Group 1 winner. Proved she is right up there with the best of our gallopers during the spring and probably ran as well as the pattern of the day allowed when resuming in the Futurity. She has won four from five at 1600m and three from six second up.

10. Arista (57kg)

Trainer: Matthew Ellerton & Simon Zahra
Jockey: Dwayne Dunn
Barrier: 8

Quality mare who wasn’t suited by the pattern of the day when resuming behind Greysful Glamour over 1400m first up. Suited by the step up to 1600m and has been placed second up but hasn’t won at a distance less than 2000m and looks tested in the grade.

11. Alligator Blood (56kg)

Trainer: David Vandyke
Jockey: Ryan Maloney
Barrier: 10

One of a crop of star three year old’s with an undeniable will to win. He has the tactical versatility to either lead or take a sit and can unleash a powerful finishing burst under either circumstance. He is deep enough into his preparation that he is unlikely to be improving but if he just holds his form he will be fighting out the finish again.

12. Dalasan (56kg)

Trainer: Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas
Jockey: Jamie Kah
Barrier: 13

Talented three year old who appears best suited when he settles off the speed in races run at a strong tempo. Hasn’t had races run to his liking this preparation and will be at peak fitness, but still needs to improve on his recent runs to be a winning hope.

13. Superstorm (56kg)

Trainer: Grant & Alana Williams
Jockey: Mark Zahra
Barrier: 14

WA visitor who measured up well when charging home and running the quickest last 200m of the race behind Alligator Blood in the Australian Guineas. There is likely to be more pressure on the speed in this race as opposed to the Australian Guineas and that should play in his favour.

14. Heart Of Puissance (56kg)

Trainer: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace
Jockey: John Allen
Barrier: 1

Highly talented three year old attacking this race through an easier form line. He ran well without much luck when resuming at BM70 level at Sandown but proved competitive in the Sandown Guineas at the end of his last campaign underlining his class. Clearly his toughest test to date, but a horse with a bit of x-factor who was a second up winner in much easier company last campaign.

15. Flit (54kg)

Trainer: James Cummings
Jockey: Damian Lane
Barrier: 15

Winner of the Group 1 Thousand Guineas over this course and distance last spring. Has returned to racing in good form and should be approaching peak fitness with two recent runs under her belt. Taking on the older horses for the first time but has the class to be competitive.

Selection: Melody Belle

A ten time Group 1 winner who wasn’t suited by the pattern of racing when resuming here behind Streets of Avalon. Will no doubt strip fitter and capable of settling in an advantageous position from a favourable draw. Alligator Blood looks set to roll forward with Streets of Avalon and will be the one Melody Belle is trying to run down. Fierce Impact and the Western Australian visitors Regal Power and Superstorm along with Mr Quickie looks strong chances for multiple bet types.
