Scott Embry’s Thursday Northam Preview

Race 1

SOVEREIGN ROCK is well placed against the older horses. He finished third to Hes A Machino fresh last prep, then finished third to They’reallsisters and Boy Crush before heading to a Magic Millions. Bigger and stronger this time around. SPANISH ARMADA led at 1300m first-up when second to now C1 winner Forgotten Son. Second-up he went to 1400m and faded late to be beaten 3.3L to Lucky Moon and subsequent plunge winner Lets Take A Chance. Back to 1100m and ridden for speed expect he’ll go close. NIGHT BROKER won a barrier trial by nearly 2.5L back in March when leading and then this time around just faded late (no blinkers though). Straight to Pike signals intent and expectation. FINITTO WEB nearly pinched it first-up this track/distance at any old odds.

Numbers: 6 – 1 – 8 – 2

Suggested Bet – SOVEREIGN ROCK WIN

Race 2

MAGNIFICENT PRINCE looks a nice type from the trials. In recent months we’ve seen the 2 year olds running well against the older horses in All Age maidens (think Dawn Dancer, Optimus Prime, Properata/Star Martini) and now the new season 3 year olds look to continue to run. Like the way he extends once asked and from the draw should land midfield with cover and present on straightening. Winnable race on debut. ESPRESSO TIME sat wide throughout last start and kept coming late. Brave effort? CHATTAHOOCHIE has a set of shades going on second-up. Hopefully that sharpens her up because sectionally she had every chance fresh and couldn’t go past Finitto Web (200-1) and Espresso Time ran past her (three deep the trip). She’s better than that. PROFOUND BENEFIT is through the Delzee / The Rocket race which is heavily on show Wednesday.

Numbers: 8 – 3 – 6 – 1

Suggested Bet – MAGNIFICENT PRINCE WIN

Race 3

DIGGERS SHOUT went around a $4.40 chance on debut (in fact, jumped second favourite) in a race that contained They’reallsisteres, Godspeed, Lifetime Dream, The Persian God and Non Reflective. Goes from a Saturday 2 year old event into a 3 year old 1100m maiden at his second start and Pike sticks with him. Given the way that Godspeed destroyed them on Saturday it has to be considered the strongest form reference and by a margin. Right race, just needs to overcome what looks a tricky gate on paper. SAFE AND SOUND has trialled well on multiple occasions now and in the most recent of them was bolting behind the leader until eventually getting clear. CLEAR ASSAULT and PROFIT GAL (half to Madhi Girl) are both through the same barrier trial behind impressive first-up winner Properata. They both covered the ground nicely and both went to the line under little riding.

Numbers: 2 – 8 – 10 – 11

Suggested Bet – DIGGERS SHOUT WIN

Race 4

SIN CITY BOY was crunched in betting last start as he stepped into a 2200m maiden for the first time this prep. He jumped $2.80, in from $7.50, and ran home strongly into second after finding a bit of traffic on straightening, held up behind tiring horses who were taking him nowhere (but backwards). Happy to follow the money trail and put him on top here. THANGOO is out to 2200m at only his third life time start but he was a great effort behind progressive staying type Dirty Habits last time out at 1700m. No surprise to see him run them into the ground. HE’SNOTALLTHERE ran third behind Luka Magic and Sin City Boy last start in a key form reference race. DELICATE WARRIOR looks a one paced staying maiden type.

Numbers: 4 – 5 – 6 – 3

Suggested Bet – SIN CITY BOY WIN

Race 5

FIELD MISTRESS is getting close now. She finished third to Cosmo Ruler, third to Lucky Moon (and Lets Take A Chance) and then second to that same galloper just last week. 7-day back-up, drawn soft and looks ready to win. CELESTIAL BOOM ran second to Diamond Warrior first-up at 1300m and is immediately out in trip. Doesn’t do any work from the draw and looks the logical danger (and with Pike, possibly favourite?). BEND IT LIKE BECKS ran third to Jimmy Angel on debut at 1400m, second to All Laced Up at his second-up run, third behind Enchanted Miss at his first crack at 1650 and then was thrown into the deep end into the Listed Aquanita Stakes at 2000 when beaten out of sight. Back in trip, back into a maiden and hopefully bouncing back to some form. HISTORY SUPREME is an intriguing galloper. I hate those 1450m trials but he bounded right away from them late. Could win, could finish last.

Numbers: 6 – 8 – 1 – 5

Suggested Bet – FIELD MISTRESS WIN

Race 6

MARCOS let down with a strong turn of foot to win a 2 year old Maiden last Wednesday at Belmont Park. The horses in that line up included Pucker Up, Manhattan Squeeze, Profit Motive, Super God – what looked a really hot race on paper – and now 8 days later he only rises half a kilo into a C1 against the older horses. Like this set up for him to sit midfield and unleash late. Improving type. FLYING MARADONA led and won in a canter first-up this track/distance. They may have found how to ride him because he simply ran rivals ragged: first 700m = 7L faster than average, last 600m = 5.5L slower than average. Aerobically superior. NEXT DESTINATION wasn’t disgraced in a C3 last week and backs up off 7 days. ARTIES STORM was alright at her WA debut.

Numbers: 5 – 1 – 6 – 3

Suggested Bet – MARCOS WIN

Race 7

FANTAXTIC really appreciated getting a few confidence boosting wins in the Great Southern last prep and then late in his campaign won a Westspeed 1200 on Cup Day. Trialled well, maps well and just looks a different horse these days. Hard to argue with how the stable has been going last 6 months too. LATER ALLIGATOR won a Westspeed Platinum 1200 first-up last preparation off two trials. All of his Westspeed Platinum / 60+ Graduation form from when last in work is good enough to win this, as long as they’re making some ground, which in recent meetings has been achievable. DESERT DANCING is another who needs track conditions / pattern to suit but she loves Northam and has caught the eye in each run this prep. ART SESSION is a bit of an enigma. He’s got a bit of Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates about him.

Numbers: 5 – 6 – 4 – 2

Suggested Bet – FANTAXTIC WIN

Race 8

ETERNAL ROMANCE has put together two solid runs at her return to racing. First-up on a bottomless Heavy she tried to match motors with Berry Blast and second-up she finished a narrow fourth behind Sisu Spirit, Our Mate Archie and Chantel in a C5. Backing up off 7 days, back in grade and should be peaking third-up. HANAFUBUKI is first-up no trial at 1600m under 60kg. Naturally a query but she’s a staying mare fresh and ran a cracker first-up at The Heath last campaign at 1600. As a filly she ran second in a Mahogany Challenge Final ($200,000 race) at Flemington and looks the kind of mare who could work her way through the grades in Perth. GONDRINKIN hit the line strongly in Kal in a race that was no weaker than this. SHOOT TO FAME wasn’t too bad last start at Kal when the shades went back on.

Numbers: 2 – 1 – 5 – 11

Suggested Bet – ETERNAL ROMANCE WIN
