Scott Embry’s Sunday Ascot Preview Posted on February 13, 2026February 13, 2026 | Posted by Scott Embry RACE 1 BASSET HOUND drops into a maiden for the first time in his career and will no doubt have a big following. On debut he was held up the entire length of the straight and looked to be bolting behind Our Naughty Secret, Playin’ It Sweet and She’s Hot in a 3 year old 1200 and then there was always going to a risk of what happened last start at 1100m. Ascot, 50km Easterly = leaders paradise and he was back last and unable to make up the ground. Carries 1kg more in a maiden and hopefully can overcome the obvious hurdle here: barrier 16/16. CALL ME FROSTY has a set of shades on and might go back to his previous racing pattern of jump and run. XELCIMUS deserves to win one eventually after covering so much ground this prep in defeat. SHENTON ROAD an intriguing galloper as a 2 year old filly taking on the older horses. Wasn’t horrible on debut. Numbers: 5 – 4 – 8 – 16 Suggested Bet – BASSET HOUND WIN RACE 2 RIPPER FAROOQ has had three runs for new trainers Chris and Michael Gangemi and they have produced a runner-up performance to Pingers (now a C3 winner), a runner-up performance to Urquharts Bluff (now a Westspeed Platinum winner) and a third placing on a Saturday to Bohemian Diamond and Degrandhomme. Drops right back in grade into a C1, great use of the 3kg claim for ZJP and in a small field should be right on speed and very hard to beat. WHO’S BENT was stiff first-up in a 60+ Graduation when drawing wide, going back, being held up on straightening and finishing off well. Last start ended up three deep the trip from barrier 4 and the horse who beat him home goes to a 66+ in Cannykev. MR KISSINGER is still probably looking for 1200m but he’s a winning chance. SETAGAYA was better back in trip. Numbers: 2 – 1 – 4 – 7 Suggested Bet – RIPPER FAROOQ WIN RACE 3 THE CRIMSON PIRATE is a 7 start maiden who carries 60kg in a C1, however, he’s finished within a head of winning a 60+ Graduation at 1600 and at 1800. When you think about it, the most likely scenario is that his second-up run will be in a fortnight’s time in a Lex Piper Stakes before heading to a JC Roberts, Melvista Stakes and potentially a WATC Derby. It’s an ask weight wise but expect he can get his maiden out of the way. MOONWALK never got into the contest first-up and the market knew. She was an alarming drifter in betting, un-layable and ran accordingly. Maybe she’s looking for ground quickly now and the step to 1500m coupled with the addition of Pike means we’ll find out. HEY TRUE BLUE won well last start at Albany. ROMANCE CALLING did beat Nine Ball one day at Northam. Numbers: 1 – 7 – 3 – 8 Suggested Bet – THE CRIMSON PIRATE WIN RACE 4 MAGICAL SEQUENCE sat three deep the trip first-up in a C1 to beat Urquharts Bluff (won two since), had to sprint hard to win her C3 at Pinjarra on the Scarpside and then progressed to a C5 when sitting worse than midfield in a race that was dominated close handy to the speed. Comes back into a C3, reunites with Pike and draws to get the run of the race. Can bounce straight back. MAIN ACT was $18 into $9 first-up in a 60+ Graduation off the back of a strong 950m trial win at Lark Hill and is really well placed here in a C3 after the claim for an apprentice who is sneaking under the radar. MAI ALOHA trialled super leading into her return and just couldn’t quite out sprint Pingers fresh who has gone to a C3 since and beaten Rolling Ruler. She’s capable of working her way through the grades. WRITTEN WORDS is double accepted for Saturday at Pinjarra and Sunday at Ascot. Both look winnable with the shades on. Numbers: 3 – 1 – 4 – 10 Suggested Bet – MAGICAL SEQUENCE WIN RACE 5 HAIDA GWAII isn’t a big mare and the 59.5kg could be the sticking point late here, but you have to admire how well she’s been going this prep. First-up sat in the breeze and held out Want A Winner, second-up sat in the breeze and held then off again, third-up went to a 72+ and was gunned down by Amaroo Star and Keep Ita Mystery, but the leader who she parked up outside was Tycoon Harry and she still beat him home comfortably and he came out and won on Wednesday at Belmont. There’s plenty of speed and pressure here again but she’s fool proof. KEEP ITA MYSTERY will likely drop straight out to last and be saved up for one last crack at them. Certainly looks on paper like they’ll be stopping late. CANNYKEV takes a huge step from a C1 into a 66+ but he’ll sneak up in behind the speed. EARTH GOD was unbelievably good last start when nothing at all went right. Numbers: 2 – 1 – 9 – 6 Suggested Bet – HAIDA GWAII WIN RACE 6 PLAYIN’ IT SWEET again looks incredibly well suited under the SWP conditions of the race and like the WA Breeders’ Classic, very hard to beat. She’s a m85 rater with 56kg, the next highest rated galloped is Dominantus at m65 and he’s carrying only 1kg less at 55kg. She’s the winner of a Burgess Queen Stakes and a WA Breeders and she’s taking on C1/C2 opponents. She held off Talkanco at 1400m and see no reason why she can’t roll forward and add another Listed feature to her ever-growing CV. DOMINATUS trialled up really sharply. For a last start 1600m winner to win a 1000m trial is very encouraging. LINCHPIN wasn’t suited at 1200m. He might only get 1kg on Playin’ It Sweet but he’s a big improver over an extra 300m. ABERDEEN FLYER is still a maiden but has a stack of talent. Numbers: 1 – 2 – 5 – 3 Suggested Bet – PLAYIN’ IT SWEET WIN RACE 7 MISTRESS OF WAR is looking for a winning hat-trick and looks to have found an extremely winnable race in which to score. She sat in the breeze last start and travelled better than anything into the corner and safely held Oisin to the line (races Saturday in a 60+ Grad 1600 at Pinjarra). Same map, same track/distance/grade, same result? CHEYNE BAY was able to sprint well first-up at 1400m and then got held up at crucial stages second-up at 1600, especially considering the type of horse he is, one who needs a full head of steam and momentum to wind up through his gears. Nice stepping stone for him on the way to the staying races this prep. BACK TO BONDI is still very new and green. ROSIE CAN RUN continues to attack the line nicely. There’s a win in her soon. Numbers: 3 – 1 – 5 – 9 Suggested Bet – MISTRESS OF WAR WIN Quaddie (Race 4 – 7) 1,3,4,10 1,2,6,9 1 1,3 Market Market
