Scott Embry’s Sunday Bunbury Preview Posted on January 9, 2026January 9, 2026 | Posted by Scott Embry RACE 1 DANDY FLIRT was well supported at odds last start ($31 into $9.50) and as is so often the case in these staying maidens the market is outrageously sharp. She was coming out of a 1500m maiden at 100-1 where beaten over 6L and somehow they found her and she ran a really good minor to Electric Bec. Quite simply if she can reproduce that run then she’s clearly the one to beat. SHE’S RESOLUTE was always a one paced staying type with Adam Durrant and it’s no different now under Brendon Fitz-Gerald. She’ll keep whacking away. DANEA ROCK trialled super over 950m leading into this campaign and has definitely been better than previous preps, however, it’s hard to get too enthused by a 22 start maiden! WILLYABRUP has Holly Nottle. That’s enough. Numbers: 9 – 8 – 7 – 5 Suggested Bet – DANDY FLIRT WIN RACE 2 MEDIA MOGUL was backed as if unbeatable on debut in a 3 year old 0MWLY when parking in the breeze and fading back into fourth beaten just over 3L by Hasani. He then went to a 3 year old Saturday when finishing last beaten nearly 8L and was sent to the paddock. There’s clearly an expectation on his ability from within the stable and his recent 950m trial was much sharper than what he produced last campaign. DMac’s last 90 days has been seriously sharp and expect he’ll take beating at his return. MYSTIC EMPRESS put the writing on the wall first-up at Bunbury. She settled last over the 1200m and savaged the line from an impossible position on straightening. Drawn to get a far better run here and is a big danger. GOD’S CROSS is making his debut off the back of a string of encouraging trials. STARCHASER was solid in the Dark Avalanche race but not as good as Mystic Empress. Numbers: 3 – 8 – 4 – 5 Suggested Bet – MEDIA MOGUL WIN RACE 3 WATTO’S MARK has had one trial this preparation and it was a dominant near 4L win. He heads straight to the races off that effort and has managed to strike a winnable maiden in the process. Going to trust the eye and suggest he can win on debut. VAMPI QUEEN ran second to future Champion Fillies winner Pure Excess in a 950 trial back in September and this time around was solid in another 950 at Lark Hill. Just needs to overcome a tricky alley. TWO TIME CHARLIE looked quite sharp in his initial preparation when trained by Hayden Ballantyne and now finds himself resuming into his second campaign with new trainer SJ Miller. Like the way he goes about it and expect that he’ll be winning races. SAFEDEEL had two starts in the ACT and now transfers across to WA with new trainer Michael Lane. Hasn’t been asked for a great deal at trails and is a watch at his WA debut. Numbers: 7 – 12 – 1 – 3 Suggested Bet – WATTO’S MARK WIN RACE 4 AUTUMN GEM was given the typical Michael Lane quiet trials at Lark Hill and resumed over 1300m when holding her own late behind dominant all the way winner Poblano. She was really the only other horse in the race to make any impression and second-up is drawn to get a similar run, hopefully even a pair closer, in a race that looks to have less depth. Gets her chance. MAGIC CARATS has been around the mark all campaign and again kept coming in the Arpione race. Drawn awkwardly and may have to go back here which is a concern. SPANGLEDSTAR should have finished much closer last start after she was held up behind tiring horses from the corner until the race was all over. SYLVA JACK was kept very safe on debut as a $4.40 chance. May need further by the looks? Numbers: 12 – 1 – 8 – 6 Suggested Bet – AUTUMN GEM WIN RACE 5 BUNDABERG led and won his maiden at Pinjarra over 1200m in sharp time and then struggled to really produce to the same level thereafter. Has been spelled after the Kalgoorlie trip and interestingly Darren McAuliffe brings him straight to the races without a trial. Could be a show of confidence and the DMac/Holly Nottle combo has been on a hot streak for over a month now. ROMMEL’S GODDESS bolted in first start for new trainer Anthony Barton. This is a step up from a 46+ but she won effortlessly. AMERICAN ESCAPE has been on-sold and finds a new home with Cliff Green. She’s mid-prep, 5 weeks between outings and has been ticking along okay recently. HYPERREAL has improved out of sight since that first trip to Albany in November. Numbers: 8 – 6 – 1 – 3 Suggested Bet – BUNDABERG WIN RACE 6 UNIVERSAL HOTNESS looks to have found the most winnable race of his preparation. He has placed in a C5 to Run Pattie Run, placed in a 0MWLY to Rally The Troops and now heads back into a C1. His only win was a Bunbury 1400 and he looks like he’ll bounce out and either lead or box seat. Right place, right time. PURE SILVER won her maiden by 2.5L and since then has gone to a Champion Fillies, a Lee Steere Classic and a pair of 3 year old 0MWLY. This is the first time she’ll contest a C1 and the shades coming off looks the right move too. LA EXCELLENCE went from a maiden into a 60+ Graduation. This is more to his liking. JAZALOT has been hitting the line well all prep. Numbers: 4 – 11 – 1 – 7 Suggested Bet – UNIVERSAL HOTNESS WIN RACE 7 HEZ GOT THE SAFE was only narrowly defeated last start from the breeze at 1200m and looks to be screaming out for 1400 now. He’s drawn to get a lovely run close handy to the speed and has always promised to win a few races. Has more ability than his 1 from 11 strike rate and hopefully he can start to put it all together now. THE SCHOLAR bolted in first-up, winning his maiden by over 5L. Was nominated for a stack of races across the weekend and must respect the fact that Toni Triscari did have him nominated for a 60+ Grad. SEINDEEL heads across to WA as the winner of 2 from 9, with a strong career SP profile and has trialled well on two occasions leading into his return. He has to be a big player in this and if Pike was booked he’d be nearly favourite. IMAPAGETHREE GIRL has raced well all prep. Numbers: 3 – 6 – 1 – 8 Suggested Bet – HEZ GOT THE SAFE WIN Quaddie (Race 4 – 7) 1,8,12 6,8 4,11 1,3,6 Market Market
