Runner by Runner: The Nullarbor

1. Typhoon Banner

Trainer: Dylan Egerton-Green
Driver: Dylan Egerton-Green

On face value looks outclassed in this company but the pole draw gives him a place chance. He wasn’t far away when 6th in the Pinjarra Cup and he is likely to trail the favourite throughout and he can hang on to his coat tails if they don’t go too hard.

2. Magnificent Storm

Trainer: Ray Williams
Driver: Aldo Cortopassi

Has looked sharper this time in despite battling bad draws and he has finally come up with a good barrier for a big race. He ran on from near the rear to record an impressive win at his last start but he looks the likely leader here and will be the one to beat in that role.

3. Lavra Joe

Trainer: Ray Jones
Driver: Chris Lewis

Has led throughout to win two of his last three starts and split those victories with an impressive 2nd to Magnificent Storm when he ran on from the rear. He is drawn to be prominent throughout and should give a great sight again.

4. Betterzippit

Trainer: Jason Grimson
Driver: Cameron Hart

Former New Zealander who has jumped out of the ground since joining the Grimson stable and has won five of his six Australian starts. He recorded a sizzling 1.48.6 in his last victory and will make his presence felt here if he handles the longer trip and tighter GP track.

5. Jumpingjackmac

Trainer: Gary Hall Snr
Driver: Gary Hall Jnr

Has shown that he isn’t capable of being used out of the gate in this company but he is a dangerous sniper if things go his way. He followed two disappointing efforts with an eye-catching 3rd here last week and he can be the knockout horse if the race is run at a solid tempo.

6. Diego

Trainer: Gary Hall Snr
Driver: Maddison Brown

Reigning WA Pacing Cup winner who excels as a frontrunner but is a capable sit-sprinter if the race is run to suit. He couldn’t make up ground in a slowly run affair at his last start but he will be charging home if there is pressure in the early stages.

7. Loyalist

Trainer: Joe Conolly
Driver: Shannon Suvaljko

Caught the eye with a fast-finishing 3rd to Betterzippit three starts back to put him in contention for this race. He looks better suited when driven cold and will need some luck to go his way to overcome the wide draw.

8. Spirit Of St Louis

Trainer: Belinda McCarthy
Driver: Jack Callaghan

He is the proven Grand Circuit performer but looked a bit flat at his first run in WA last week. He now also has to overcome the visitors’ draw so there is plenty against him but he is too good to overlook as a winning chance.

9. Mighty Ronaldo

Trainer: Justin Prentice
Driver: Emily Suvaljko

The Fremantle Cup winner who excels in the role of sniper and he will have to be driven in that manner from this draw. He has an electrifying turn of foot when held up for one run but will be giving some very good horses a head-start so will need the breaks to go his way.

10. Steel The Show

Trainer: Greg & Skye Bond
Driver: Deni Roberts

The new kid on the block who impressed in winning his first four starts in WA and lost no admirers when he stepped up in class and ran 4th to Magnificent Storm. He is drawn to enjoy a soft run on the pegs and can be dangerous if he sees daylight at the right time.

Selection: Magnificent Storm

Has looked back to his best at his last three starts and finally gets the barrier he needs to assert his dominance in a big race. He is likely to find the front in the early stages and is capable of running sectionals that will make him very difficult to catch.
