Jonathan Cook’s World Game Wrap-Up Posted on February 6, 2023March 10, 2023 | Posted by Jonathan Cook Kane makes Spurs’ history Manchester City blew an opportunity to close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal as Harry Kane made Tottenham Hotspur history. The England striker scored his 200th Premier League goal and his 267th goal in all competitions for Spurs to surpass Jimmy Greaves as the club’s greatest ever goal scorer. The 1-0 victory was a blow to second-placed City, who are five points behind an Arsenal side which lost to Everton on Saturday. Kane’s 17th Premier League goal of the season was important for Spurs, who are now fifth, just a point behind fourth-placed Newcastle. Kane is just the third player in Premier League history to reach the 200-goal milestone, along with Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney. There won’t be a quick fix for struggling Everton but James Tarkowski’s header, courtesy of a Dwight McNeil corner, was a great way for the duo’s former Burnley boss Sean Dyche to kick-off his managerial stint with the Toffees. It was only a fourth win of the season for Everton, who had won one of their previous 12 games under previous manager Frank Lampard. Everton are third from bottom on the table but Dyche’s immediate impact has given fans hope that he can steer them clear of the relegation zone. United were on their way to a 13th win of the season, with goals from Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes, when players from both teams were involved in a shoving match. Palace’s Jeffrey Schlupp and United’s Antony were both booked for their role in the fracas but there was worse to come for Casemiro. The Video Assistant Referee spotted Casemiro with his hands on Will Hughes’ neck and after reviewing the incident at the pitch-side monitor, referee Andre Marriner sent off the Brazilian. It was tough on Casemiro whose actions didn’t seem any worse than others involved in the incident. 🚨 NEW angle of the fight that led to Casemiro Red Card. 🇧🇷 pic.twitter.com/cI99DPBk1W — UtdPlug (@UtdPlug) February 4, 2023 Dawson smashes home debut goal Defender Craig Dawson kicked off his Wolverhampton Wanderers career with a goal that helped send Liverpool crashing to a seventh defeat of the season. Dawson celebrated his debut, after joining from West Ham United in the transfer window, by smashing home Wolves’ second goal in a 3-0 win. Joel Matip steered the ball into his own net just five minutes in and Dawson doubled the advantage with just 12 minutes on the clock. Liverpool had plenty of the ball and created chances of their own but defeat was sealed when Ruben Neves completed the scoring midway through the second half. Signed from Stoke City, Souttar was immediately thrown into Brendan Rodgers’ starting line-up and after just 32 minutes Ollie Watkins’ shot deflected in off the Australian. But a superb debut and goal from Brazilian Tete helped Leicester record a 4-2 victory, which was their first win in six games. Souttar also played his part in the win, settling into the game and making an important block to deny Watkins. The special guests from his school might have been wondering if they would see the 16-year-old in action as the clock ticked down and he remained on the bench. But Irankunda was introduced with 12 minutes to play and took just four minutes to surge past two defenders and smash the ball home to seal a 2-1 win for the home side. Glory extended their unbeaten streak to six matches but had been on the cusp of a win that would have moved them to fifth place. And victory had looked to be on the cards after Luke Bodnar and Mark Beevers scored their first Glory goals either side of a stunning Reno Piscopo strike. But with just two minutes left, Goodwin scored the visitors’ equaliser to spoil the Glory party. But when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer just days after signing for Dortmund, his focus switched to matters far more important than football. After two operations and four rounds of chemotherapy, the Ivory Coast forward returned to action less than two weeks ago. And on Saturday he marked just a second start of the season with his first goal. Haller scored the third of Dortmund’s goals in a 5-1 thrashing of Freiburg. Martinez scored the only goal of the game in the first half to seal a victory that kept Inter 13 points behind Napoli, who are continuing their charge at the top of the table. Victor Osimhen took his season tally to 15 goals by scoring twice in Napoli’s 3-0 win over Spezia. Napoli have lost only once this season when Edin Dzeko scored the only goal of the game in Inter’s victory last month. Goalless at the break, Barca went through the gears, scoring three times in a 21-minute spell through Jordi Alba, Gavi and Raphinha. The win came after Real Madrid had been beaten 1-0 by Mallorca courtesy of a Nacho own goal.
