Deane Lester’s Caulfield Best Bets Posted on May 10, 2019 | Posted by Deane Lester Deane Lester’s Best Bets RACE 4 NO.5 GUIZOT GUIZOT scored an overdue win last time and looks the one to beat again when he contests the Open Handicap (1600m). The Aaron Purcell trained gelding was a class above his rivals scoring a victory in the City Of Warrnambool Handicap (1700m) at Warrnambool on April 30. The six year old handles all track conditions and his three starts at Caulfield have yielded a win and two placings. He goes well for rider Jordan Childs who maintains the mount here and GUIZOT is poised to record his 7th career win. RACE 5 NO.10 WARRAGUL A good value chance at the Caulfield meeting looks to be WARRAGUL when she runs in the Mares Handicap (1100m). The five year old looked terrific in recording a strong first-up win over 1000 metres at Wagga Wagga on April 23. She has always displayed city class talent and this might be the preparation that she fulfils her potential. She has a good record at this distance and gets the benefit of Blaike McDougall’s 2kg claim. She has a handy record of four wins and six placings from 16 starts to date and appears primed for a strong showing in this race. RACE 8 NO.8 LEONARDO DA HINCHI LEONARDO DA HINCHI is arguably the most exciting horse running at the Caulfield meeting and looks well placed to make a winning return to racing when he contests the Open Handicap (1200m). The three year old enjoyed a fruitful initial campaign when trained by Darren Weir winning his first two starts before consecutive placings behind the subsequent Doncaster Mile winner BRUTAL. He then won the Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley before finishing 6th behind THE AUTUMN SUN in the Caulfield Guineas last October. He has now joined the Mick Price stable and two recent jumpouts at Terang and Caulfield would suggest that LEONARDO DA HINCHI is forward enough to record a first-up victory and represents the best bet of the day.
