Deane’s Sunday Caulfield Best Bets Posted on January 5, 2018 | Posted by Deane Lester Deane Lester’s Preview RACE 2 NO. 5 ANDREA MANTEGNA ANDREA MANTEGNA will be fitter for two runs back from a short break and looks the testing material when he runs in the Benchmark 78 Handicap (2000m). The Darren Weir trained import ran on stoutly when finishing 2nd behind the in-form NETHERFIELD over 1800 metres at Caulfield on December 26. He will appreciate the slightly longer trip and this looks a very suitable race for him to record his third victory in Australia. RACE 6 NO. 2 WIDGEE TURF WIDGEE TURF has returned to racing in stunning form with wins at Sandown and Moonee Valley in recent weeks, and looks well placed to complete the hat-trick of wins when he runs in the Benchmark 84 Handicap (1600m). The four year old sprinted hard to win in good time over 1500 metres at Moonee Valley on December 23 and the slight increase in distance for this race shouldn’t pose a problem. He is drawn for a cheap run and looks the standout bet of the day. SuperPick - RACE 6 NO. 2 WIDGEE TURF - Win Boost RACE 7 NO. 11 PREVAILING WINDS PREVAILING WINDS has made significant improvement this preparation and looks a great winning chance again when he contests the Benchmark 78 Handicap (1200m). The three year old was a dominant winner in fast time at Mornington two starts back before looking a touch unlucky when finishing 2nd behind ONEHUNDRED PERCENT over 1100 metres at Caulfield on December 26. He will appreciate stepping up in distance and should make his own luck in running from a middle draw. His main rival in this race, MANOLO BLAHNIQ, is dropping in class but has won only one of his 14 career starts. It promises to be a terrific clash but PREVAILING WINDS is ideally placed to return to winning form. Bet Now
