Deane Lester’s Flemington Best Bets Posted on July 19, 2019 | Posted by Deane Lester Deane Lester’s Best Bets RACE 4 NO.3 LORD BELVADERE Imported stayer LORD BELVADERE is showing good promise for the Maher/ Eustace stable and looks the one to beat when he contests the Harry White Handicap (2500m). The five year old scored a strong first-up win over 1600 metres at Cranbourne on May 24 before a solid 4th over 1800 metres at Rosehill on June 15. He looks ready to step up to a longer distance and is a winner over 2400 metres in England last year. In-form rider Ben Melham takes the mount and LORD BELVADERE appears well placed to record his fifth career victory. RACE 8 NO.7 NEW UNIVERSE NEW UNIVERSE has been racing very well without winning in Sydney this preparation, however trainer Chris Waller looks to have found the ideal race for him when he tackles the VRC Recognition Handicap (1600m). The five year old has been running on strongly in recent outings, so the 1600 metres at Flemington looks ideal for him, He is drawn for a sweet run and Melbourne’s champion rider Craig Williams takes the mount. It looks an even and competitive race that NEW UNIVERSE is well up to winning. RACE 9 NO.11 USAIN BOWLER USAIN BOWLER resumes from a spell when he runs in the Benchmark 90 Handicap (1000m) and appears well placed for a big showing. The four year old was tested at group one level last preparation and was far from disgraced in both the Oakleigh Plate and the Newmarket Handicap. He has a genuine liking for the Flemington straight and astute trainer John Sadler will have him primed to resume as a winner. He has trialled well for this race and looks a strong winning chance.
