Deane Lester’s Flemington Best Bets Posted on May 3, 2019 | Posted by Deane Lester Deane Lester’s Best Bets RACE 2 NO.13 PHONEME PHONEME will be fitter for one run back from a spell and looks a strong winning chance when he tackles the Benchmark 78 Handicap (1620m). The son of Choisir raced a bit keenly but battled on well when finishing 3rd behind TARWIN over 1440 metres at Caulfield on April 13. Whilst he is taking on older horses this time, he appears to have more upside than his rivals and will relish getting onto the spacious Flemington track. It’s a competitive race but PHONEME appeals at each way odds. RACE 5 NO.1 GRINZINGER STAR Progressive stayer GRINZINGER STAR has his final lead-up for next week’s SA Derby (2500m) when he runs in the 3YO Handicap (2000m) and should continue on his winning way. The Danny O’Brien trained gelding has won his past two runs at Caulfield, first defeating the highly talented MR QUICKIE over 1600 metres on April 6 before defeating older horses over 2000 metres on April 20. He looks well placed again in this field and gets the benefit of Ethan Brown’s 1.5kg allowance. He is a smart horse in the making that should win again. RACE 6 NO.5 POISED TO STRIKE Consistent galloper POISED TO STRIKE deserves another win and gets his chance to break through when he runs in the 3YO Handicap (1200m). The Hayes/ Dabernig trained gelding looked a touch unlucky when finishing second behind MORRISSY over 1200 metres at Caulfield on April 20. He drops 5.5kg on that run and returns to the Flemington straight track where he produced his best winning performance last December. He’s a fit and in-form horse that should run well again.
