Scott Embry’s Thursday Mount Barker Preview Posted on January 3, 2024January 3, 2024 | Posted by Scott Embry RACE 1 BLAZEN STAR finished a narrow second to Twigger first-up and then finished 4L behind Masamune, Galilea and Elite Fashions. That’s more than good enough form to be leading and winning a maiden at Mt Barker. Jump and run tends to suit. BRONTE’S DREAM is accepted after running around at Bunbury on Sunday when hard in the market behind Torpedoman. She took the cutaway and looked a fleeting chance before fading out of the contest to finish fourth. This is another step back in class for her and she’s the danger. FLICK THE SWITCH was solid in two runs earlier in the Great Southern season. PILBARA SONG drops back to 1000m. Numbers: 3 – 7 – 8 – 2 Suggested Bet – BLAZEN STAR WIN RACE 2 SOLDIERS CAMP should get every chance again. Lead and faded last start at Pinjarra behind Boab Boy and Desert Sleeve but was only beaten 1L in the finish and never gave it up once headed on straightening. GET OUT MICK can do a few things wrong but he’s got all the necessary ability to win this and even a C1/C2. ORTABEAROCKSTAR really rolled them along in the $50,000 maiden at her first start for Roy Rogers. Overall race time was 6L faster than maiden average so she was entitled to get tired late. PUNTERS PILOT has reasonable form in tougher races than this. Numbers: 3 – 4 – 7 – 5 Suggested Bet – SOLDIERS CAMP WIN RACE 3 SAMARIA should be hard to beat in this. Last preparation she finished second to Desennae in a C1 1400 at Northam and the third horse in that race was Deamber. That form is super for a C2 at Mt Barker. She’s on the fresh side and can either cross to lead or park up outside of Stay Wealthy if he’s too sharp out of the machine. Either way parks on speed and should give a great sight. STAY WEALTHY raced 28 days ago at Albany and almost pinched it. He was only run down in the final stride by Imposing Brook. Should be opening his WA account in the near future. BEAUTIFUL BAROQUE should be a nice acquisition for Sam Faithfull and can go well fresh. SONG STORY has been solid in two runs since breaking maiden status. Numbers: 3 – 1 – 6 – 5 Suggested Bet – SAMARIA WIN RACE 4 OXBRIDGE has been the sectional star of the Great Southern racing scene so far this preparation with three consecutive all the way wins for Rosie Mahony and Stephen Sheehy. First-up win was 6L faster than average, second-up win was 7L faster than average and third-up win was 8L faster than average. Remarkably it’s faster the better for him and the last time he raced at Mt Barker he won by 5.3L. Too quick again? BEAU ZOOM was a great run at Ascot last start. Looked in trouble before finding traffic and then finding a second wind to come again late into sixth. Bec Bayliss has them humming. CLASSIC MAGNUS is always a chance in c70+ grade. STRATHMORE ROSE is very speedy. Interesting to see whether they try and hold out Oxbridge or let him go. Numbers: 4 – 6 – 2 – 1 Suggested Bet – OXBRIDGE WIN RACE 5 BLUE LINE is back in form and punters showed their hand last start when he was confidently backed from $4.40 into $2.90 in the last half hour of betting. Gets 1.5kg on Star Soprano for being beaten under half a length and can park on the back of a potential speed battle between Prince Ragnar and Star Soprano. Nice race for him. STAR SOPRANO lead and won last start and it’s not game over if he has to tow them to Prince Ragnar. PRINCE RAGNAR is drawn underneath him and if he leaves the gates cleanly could potentially hold him out. Best and worst are 20L apart but on his day he’s pretty sharp. RED INFERNO hasn’t raced for a long time but beware the astute tutelage of stable foreman J.W Pateman. Numbers: 1 – 2 – 3 – 5 Suggested Bet – BLUE LINE WIN RACE 6 MERCURIUS lead and won a C1 1800 at Ascot going back six starts. Hasn’t really fired a shot since that day but thought there was some level of merit to his fourth placing behind Valley Of Queens, Paigey’s Turn and Awesome Chatter last start at Bunbury in a C5. Drops back into a C2 and can stay out of trouble at the front of the field. Very even contest this. HIGHBOY was too tough for them last start at Narrogin when leading throughout to win. He’ll look to rinse and repeat from barrier 1. FAR TOO STRONG hasn’t seen a race this weak in a long while. 6 weeks between runs at 1850m is an ask. FEELS DANISH is going well. Just not convinced she’s an apprentice’s horse. Numbers: 2 – 6 – 5 – 1 Suggested Bet – MERCURIUS WIN RACE 7 VONSNIP won a C2 1230 at Albany two starts ago beating Hot Chatter and then went to a sharp 58+ that contained Kohli and Rocapozzene. Neither of those gallopers are in this field and so from barrier 3 she looks to get every chance to win another. Nice day on paper for Sam & Tash Faithfull. ZAC LUVS TO FLY is as honest and consistent as they come and he drps 4.5kg in weight here. CANDIDAY has enjoyed a great season to date and is a real barrier horse. Gets the draw she needs. MINI WINNIE hasn’t produced a lot at the races for a few seasons but he did win a Mt Barker Sprint back in 2022. Numbers: 4 – 6 – 10 – 7 Suggested Bet – VONSNIP WIN Quaddie (Race 4 – 7) 2,4,6 1,2 FD 4,6,10 Market Market
