Giadresco Plans Winterbottom Stakes Miracle Posted on November 27, 2017November 27, 2017 | Posted by Julio Santarelli Nearly 12-months after suffering life threatening injuries in a horror accident, Bunbury trainer, Peter Giadresco is planning to cap his miracle survival with a stunning Group 1 victory in next week’s Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot. In January, Giadresco stared death in the face and was left fighting for his life when a half-tonne steel ramp on the back of a track crushed him near his home in Collie. Left in a crumpled heap by the side of the road, Giadresco sustained two broken legs, a fractured pelvis, a crushed chest, multiple broken bones and a ruptured thoracic aorta. If not for the quick and heroic actions of Giadresco’s son, Quintin, paramedics and a passing motorist, Giadresco would have certainly bled to death. Giadresco has since made a remarkable and inspirational recovery, confounding doctors after spending 15 days in the Intensive Care Unit at Royal Perth Hospital. Giadresco’s brave rehabilitation has been led by the love and support of his family, but also by the deeds of his favourite horse, Profit Street, who he co-trains with son Matthew. Like Giadresco, Profit Street has also had to overcome his own battle with illness that has restricted the six-year-old to just 23 career starts. Giadresco has natural affection for the son of Viscount, but believes he is underrated and the forgotten horse in the Winterbottom Stakes. Profit Street is considered an outside chance in the $1 million feature with local star State Solicitor consolidating favouritism following an astonishing victory in last week’s Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m). The Nicconi gelding, aided by the skill of champion jockey William Pike, charged home powerfully after being badly held up for a run early in the straight. Profit Street ran a slashing fourth, beaten a neck in a thrilling finish. “I thought he produced the run of the race,” Giadresco said. “State Solicitor was good, but he scraped the fence while my horse was wide and I don’t think they went very hard in front which didn’t suit him. “I think if he draws well he is a genuine chance. “It will be a nice way to end a pretty crappy year.” Brad Parnham has been booked to ride Profit Street. The Winterbottom Stakes draw will be conducted on Tuesday.
