Chris Nelson’s Saturday Doomben Preview Posted on May 16, 2024May 16, 2024 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 Group 1 racing at Doomben kicks off with a Class 6 over the mile & it’s a tough way to kick off the big day. I’m staying safe & sticking local suggesting having something on the two Tony Gollan trained runners RISING PACIFIC & TENZING. Both are extremely consistent & draw favourable gates, I’ll lean slightly to the former who gets the services of an in-form Jamie Kah. MIRACLE SPIN well up to this, beware he will give away a decent start though. Numbers: 6 – 9 – 4 – 20 Suggested Bet: RISING PACIFIC/TENZING TO WIN (small bets). RACE 2 Keen on the chances of the local WEIGALL TIGER second up from a break. He bounded from the barriers first up however wasn’t interested in leading, unfortunately he ended up three back the fence in a leisurely run race & then had trouble gaining a clear run in the straight. His steady closing effort was a good one & he can make amends this afternoon. Could swear WARBY won first up however the camera had other ideas, fitter he’s flying. OUTLAWED was a better effort last start ridden colder. Numbers: 9 – 7 – 5 – 6 Suggested Bet: WEIGALL TIGER TO WIN. RACE 3 Found this race near impossible & have taken the safe way out putting the Godolphin trained RAZORS on top. He backed up his good Randwick second with another at Eagle Farm in the Queensland Guineas, he’ll roll forward here & around this track should take some running down. Certainly don’t think GOLDEN DECADE is out of his depth at this level, first up win was sound enough & he’s quite promising. MIRAVAL ROSE an improver should we not race on very wet ground. Numbers: 5 – 6 – 16 – 2 Suggested Bet: RAZORS EACH-WAY (small bet). RACE 4 The stayers go around here & do tend to take it in turns to win! The more & more I try & find something to beat SPIRIT RIDGE the more trouble I have, I just keep on coming back to him. Fitter off a good fresh run in the Wagga Cup he gets J. Mac to steer from an inside gate & will be in the first three from the outset. KNIGHTS ORDER & DENY KNOWLEDGE also in that leading trio can figure in the placings. Numbers: 2 – 1 – 6 – 8 Suggested Bet: SPIRIT RIDGE EACH-WAY. RACE 5 Wouldn’t be surprised to see GRINGOTTS go off at a short quote here, just have a feeling he’s going to be heavily supported by the punters. Very good winning first up after sitting wide he then dashed quicky in the straight to land the Cup at Tamworth. First try at a mile & I’m suggesting Jamie Kah will need to time her final sprint on him, that’s likely a given though she’s riding that well. TERRITORY EXPRESS has to be included on the Ajax run two back, in cracking form, may just need luck from the inside draw as is not an on-pacer. Numbers: 11 – 4 – 5 – 10 Suggested Bet: GRINGOTTS TO WIN. RACE 6 Really looking forward to seeing the debut winner ANGEL CAPITAL go around here. He couldn’t have been any more impressive rounding his rivals up from last at Cranbourne showing a real turn of foot. Again he draws out suggesting he’ll again get back however any repeat of that performance will see him keep his unbeaten record intact. EL MORZILLO is a very good local filly who has been unlucky on a couple of occasions in Sydney. BITTERCREEK has placed his only two starts at Listed level in Melbourne. Good race. Numbers: 5 – 11 – 3 – 7 Suggested Bet: ANGEL CAPITAL TO WIN. RACE 7 In my opinion BUBBLE ROCK is the most interesting runner all day. We just don’t get to see many American horses on our shores however the ones who do venture ‘down under’ tend to race well. This mare is following a similar path to the very smart Princess Grace who is now with Chris Waller. Good gate, top jockey, betting will be our guide. PARISAL carries plenty of weight however tracks what should be a hot speed & did score well first up. BLUE SPINEL will be zooming home from her wide gate, she’s in no means out of the hunt. Numbers: 2 – 1 – 18 – 5 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 8 The Group 1 Doomben 10,000 is the days highlight & we’ve got a very short priced favourite in I WISH I WIN. I have no knock on the horse, in fact he’s the best horse in the race with the best form, what he doesn’t have is the best gate. Alley 1 will see him drift back & need luck; at the short quote I don’t want possible train wrecks so am looking elsewhere. ESPIONA will settle back in the field, she will however get to the outside & should gain a completely clear run down the straight, she should have beaten a few of these including I WISH I WIN in the T.J however bad luck got in her way. Big chance to make amends. Numbers: 7 – 1 – 6 – 5 Suggested Bet: ESPIONA EACH-WAY. RACE 9 The Rough Habit is always a terrific race for the 3yo’s on their way to the Derby. AUTUMN ANGEL has the best form & will start favourite, she’s going to get a long way back in a race which on paper lacks pace, she’ll need things to pan out. I’m with KINTYRE who just keeps on drawing good gates, he’ll track the likely low speed once again here & he’s the one they’ll all have to get past. The more rain the better for TANNHAUSER, that’s his go. Numbers: 1 – 15 – 3 – 4 Suggested Bet: KINTYRE EACH-WAY. Market Market
