Chris Nelson’s Saturday Scone Preview Posted on May 16, 2024May 16, 2024 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 Off to Scone we go for this week’s feature meeting, this one is a two-day carnival with the Cup run yesterday. The day kicks off with a Midway over the 1700m where it’s very difficult to go past SMART LEGEND who drops back from midweek metro grade, carries no more weight after the claim & won’t get a better chance to break through for an overdue win. Poor alley for SONOFDEC however nothing wrong with his form, has good upside. DANISH PRINCE & MAGNATEAR in the mix. Numbers: 8 – 9 – 1 – 4 Suggested Bet: SMART LEGEND EACH-WAY (small bet). RACE 2 This week’s Midway looks the usual raffle with chances all over the place. I’ll lean to REMATCH however not with a great deal of confidence. He should be peaking third run back though & the claim gives him some much needed weight relief. The inside draw could be a help or hindrance, just hope he doesn’t drift too far back. TOES IN THE WATER ticks a number of boxes, beaten by a very smart looking type latest run. DIRTY MERCHANT looks very close, likely gives a start of the wide gate though, will need luck. Numbers: 14 – 8 – 5 – 1 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 3 Hard to tip against TOQUE who debuted with a good 3rd in strong 2yo grade before being sent for a break. He returned with an all the way win at Canterbury & from gate 1 this afternoon I’d expect to see him again lead & from there will take plenty of running down. LAZZURA may well be looking for further now however she clocked some slick sectionals winning on debut & is certainly in the right hands. Stablemate LET’S GO BARBIE can improve off the debut run when making ground. Numbers: 1 – 3 – 10 – 5 Suggested Bet: TOQUE TO WIN. RACE 4 UNUSUAL LEGACY was very good first up at Rosehill when making late ground in a totally unsuitably run race. A winner up to 1900m the step up in distance will be a definite plus & he’s drawn an ideal gate for Jason Collett. The imports just keep on coming & here’s another TAJAWAL who showed good ability in the UK, definitely up to a race such as this if the fitness levels are there, big market watch. The consistent FOR VICTORY & the capable first-up performer KING OF CLUBS should be included. Numbers: 8 – 11 – 4 – 2 Suggested Bet: UNUSUAL LEGACY TO WIN. RACE 5 Open race where I’ll lean to the second-up JEWELLERY on an each-way basis. Only lightly raced she was solid first up when well supported & comes up with a decent alley here. Her second-up record on paper looks a little suspect however that’s a misleading. If BOJANGLES can run 2nd in a Group 3 beaten only by Schwarz he’s just got to be a big chance to go close here, definite danger. Expect improvement from IVAN’S HERO who ran very well fresh before drawing wide gates his past couple, more favourable alley today he’ll roll forward without any work. Numbers: 8 – 1 – 3 – 13 Suggested Bet: JEWELLERY EACH-WAY (small bet). RACE 6 Very good race for the 3yo’s & it’s another D-Day for the flying MARTINI MUMMA who bolted in her first two starts this prep in provincial grade before coming to town & blowing away a Highway field the latest. Yes, this is a great deal harder however she can only win & has been doing that in very impressive fashion. SPRING LEE the toughest to beat, accounted for Jewellery first up, we’ll get a good guide through that mare in the previous race. I’ve always had a good opinion of COMMEMORATIVE; wide draw makes it hard today however cannot leave out completely. Numbers: 13 – 14 – 1 – 5 Suggested Bet: MARTINI MUMMA EACH-WAY. RACE 7 The Ortensia over the sprint trip is always a hugely competitive race, this year’s shapes up as being no different. HARD TO SAY is an extremely consistent galloper who is generally underrated by the market. He does his best work on dry tracks & is nice & fit coming into this race off a last start win with a big weight displaying plenty of fight. SPACEWALK right in the mix, things didn’t pan out for him fresh however he still wasn’t far away. INSURRECTION a chance fresh from the good alley. Numbers: 5 – 3 – 1 – 6 Suggested Bet: HARD TO SAY EACH-WAY. RACE 8 Sticking with FALL FOR CINDY who will be around double-figure odds in what is a tougher race for her. She put the writing on the wall two back before dead heating at Hawkesbury in a race she should have won if not for being held-up at a crucial stage late in the straight. RUTHLESS DAME has to lump the big weight from a wide gate however keep in mind her efforts in stronger races are better than most engaged here. SHADOWS OF LOVE & OVERRIDING both winning chances as well. Numbers: 13 – 1 – 5 – 4 Suggested Bet: FALL FOR CINDY EACH-WAY. RACE 9 He’s been much maligned JIMMYSSTAR however this looks quite suitable & I’m sticking with him. The stable has a BIG opinion of him, likely bigger than punters do in recent times however they rarely get it wrong & this track should play into his hands. AMENABLE has placed in both Group 1 & Group 3 company this prep wet & dry, must include. Nice weight drop for KINLOCH who is very capable on his day, chased home Gringotts last start closing the gap late, that one is well fancied at Doomben this afternoon. Numbers: 14 – 1 – 7 – 9 Suggested Bet: JIMMYSSTAR EACH-WAY. RACE 10 You’d have to think this track with its long run home would suit a horse such as LEGIO TEN down to the ground. He’s a very capable type fresh as displayed last campaign when charging home right over the top of the leaders late to get up at Rosehill. Something similar is highly possible here. SMASHING EAGLE is an enigma however he does have a lethal finishing burst when on song. Big weight & a wide gate for MANHOOD doesn’t completely count him out. Numbers: 4 – 14 – 1 – 7 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. Market Market
