A Closer Look for Real Punters – Victoria Derby Posted on October 29, 2026October 29, 2026 | Posted by TABtouch Racing and Sports’ Brad Bishop takes a look at the record of lightly-raced Derby runners, brought to you by TABtouch. Rarely has the winner of the Victoria Derby’s premier lead-up race been showered in as much cold water as what True Rebel had dumped on him last Saturday. The Danny O’Brien-trained gelding got the job done as a short-priced favourite in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m), but failed to convince many – including winning jockey Blake Shinn – of his staying credentials. His family tree is not the only obstacle the son of sprinter Rebel Dane needs to overcome to win this Saturday’s 2500m Group 1 at Flemington. True Rebel will be having the fifth start of his debut campaign in the $3 million event and will become one of the 171-year-old race’s most lightly-raced winners if successful. The record for most lightly-raced winner will forever rest with Martini-Henry, who won on debut in 1883, but detailed data on the Derby goes back to 1991 and reveals that no horse as inexperienced as True Rebel, or several other of his Derby rivals, has won in that time. True Rebel, who is an $8.50 chance in TABtouch‘s market, made his debut on September 6 in a Bendigo maiden that also featured Derby rivals Written Empire and King Winston, who were also on debut, and Murshidi. Since 1991, eight horses have won the Derby at their sixth start, which is the least by any Derby winner in that time. Of those eight, only Extra Brut, Efficient, Helenus and Nothin’ Leica Dane did not race at two and each of them made their debut in August. The latest to appear was Efficient, who had his first start in a 1400m maiden at Ballarat on August 27, 2006. Cold Shower, who will be having his fourth start in the Derby, made his debut even more recently than those through that September 6 maiden, on September 18, while the covers first came off Hierarchy on September 4. True Tone (August 29) and King Snitz (August 28) are the other runners in this year’s Derby who made their debut later than Efficient. Inexperience in 2026 might not be the impediment it has been in years gone by, mind you, with this year’s Derby one of the freshest in the history of the race. The field of 16 and two emergencies have had just 88 starts between them – an average of 5.5 each – with no runner having been to the races more than seven times. The most experienced runners are Cormier, Stormy Marco and Vallice, but the horse who raced before any other was Murshidi, who made his debut at Geelong on January 3 before being put away and resuming in the September 6 maiden at Bendigo. Murshidi booked his Derby spot with a win in the Listed Geelong Classic (2200m) on October 20 and is out to become the first horse to complete the Geelong Classic/Derby double since Haymaker in 1974. True Rebel is looking to follow in the footsteps of last year’s Vase winner Observer, who became the sixth horse to complete the Vase/Derby double, the same number of the times the Caulfield Classic/Derby double that King Snitz is chasing has been achieved. The past five Derby winners all rounded out their preparations in a different final lead-up, but the Vase remains the most prolific producer of Derby winners, having thrown 13 of the past 30 winners, while the Caulfield Classic has provided nine of the other 17. Of course, the Ethereal Stakes does not feature in the lead-up form of any Derby winner in that time as a filly has not taken on the boys since Lycra ran fourth in 1990, but this year’s Ethereal winner Quick Finish is in the field. Fourteen fillies have won the Derby, but none since Frances Tressady in 1923. Twenty-four have run since with Tranquil Star’s second placing in the 1940 the best result, while Versine (1924), Miss Arrow (1930), But Beautiful (1953) and Born To Be Queen (1985) are the others to place. Quick Finish is a $23 chance in the TABtouch market, which is headed by Cormier ($4.60) and Stornmy Marco ($4.80). Career starts prior to 2026 Victoria Derby 3 starts: Cold Shower 4 starts: True Rebel, King Snitz, Hierarchy, Written Empire, Russian Rock, King Winston, Quick Finish, Locked In 5 starts: Murshidi, Icy You, True Tone, Meet The Prince 6 starts: Skua, Cignetti 7 starts: Cormier, Storm Marco, Vallice
