Scott Embry’s Thursday Bunbury Preview

Race 1

MODERN GIRL was enormous first-up this track/distance. She was without a trial, was drawn barrier 12/12 and was parked no better than three deep and still only went down by a half  head to talented maiden Sunset Session, beating home Oscars No Grouch in the process. That race rated through the roof so she’ll be a shop early proposition. Fitter second-up, drawn to park up over the speed and quite simply if she reproduces that run she should be beating these. SALVE REGINA ran back to back minors at Northam over the short course, most recently to a now C1 winner Flip The Pattys. 6 weeks between runs and the awkward drawn both queries. WHERE’S TIMMY showed a bit of promise in his most recent trial. ZINNY CAN RUN a watch at her return. Had trialled well before being specked in betting on debut at big prices.

Race 2

LETS TAKE A CHANCE ran third behind Ajicito and subsequent Kalgoorlie maiden winner Eightyseven Lad on debut at 1200m, stepped to 1400m second up and kept finding the line after parking wide throughout behind surprise winner Lucky Moon. Out to 1675 looks the right move because he seems to be a stayer in the making. Always risky following formlines from 1) wet tracks to dry; and 2) when there’s a 200-1 pop that wins, but this isn’t a deep race. FIELD MISTRESS comes through the same race and found the line really well into third. She’s been legless in betting at all three runs yet they’ve all had merit. Odd. DELICATE RULER finished second to now C3 winner Vexatious Rose two back. Was spinning the wheels a bit on the Soft7/Heavy8 last start. PEMBETON promised a bit early in his career but is yet to really find his distance. Best run was at 1400, didn’t seem to run 1800 and 1200 is too sharp.

Race 3

DANCE OF DRAGONS trialled up nicely at Belmont Park leading into his debut where he really caught the eye late and through the line behind Lemmor Filou (races in a C1 at Belmont on Wednesday) and Eightyseven Lad (broke through at Kal on Sunday). Love the way he powered to the line once clear and as long as he sees some daylight from the inside barrier then expect he’ll go close here. OSCARS NO GROUCH did finish third behind Zourun Run and Deep Lyric in a 3 year old Saturday fresh. Shades on and screaming out for more ground. SPINARELLA finished third behind Dawn Dancer and Morning Thunder in a 2 year old Saturday last time out. Gets in with 53.5kg against the older maidens and deserves respect. LONG LAUGH rolls straight to the top.

Race 4

KENTUCKY DRIVE is a 13 start maiden who has been to York, to Albany to Kalgoorlie and has been unable to break through, however, same as last start, this race really lacks any great depth to it. Can bounce out, can ride the speed and went down fighting at the hands of a handy type in You Can Call Me Al last time out. WAHOOCHINO ran a narrow second first-up at 1400 last prep and then at the end of the campaign found himself in a JC Roberts. STATE OF BOOM stepped out on debut an easing $3.50 chance when finishing 2L behind Seastic, Arctic Snow and Wheely. Immediately tipped out for a spell after racing quite greenly and was again a bit lost in the recent barrier trials. SAISOKU was a one paced plodder last prep. His recent barrier trial though – sharp?

Race 5

CAPE CHURCHILL went around in a 3 year old 0MWLY behind Desert Ora (won four on the bounce before Saturday) and Cosmic Waltz (maiden winner last prep). She’s clearly a work in progress and is still quite green but back into a maiden suits. Barrier 16 is the obvious unknown but looks like she’ll appreciate room to move in the three deep line. BAZAACTLY stepped out as a $15 chance on debut when third behind You Can Call Me Al and Kentucky Drive. If that galloper is to break through in the previous event of the split 1400m maiden then it’ll read up well. OCEAN REEF beat home I Love Ya Money on debut at 1200m and then struck the very wet and deteriorating day at Pinjarra second-up. Watch to see how Lets Take A Chance and Field Mistress go in Race 2. OLAF THE SNOWMAN was scratched Saturday and scratched Wednesday in preference for this race.

Race 6

SWANSEE is just a new mare for Neil Dellar. Her last two have been awesome and they’ve been on both a Good4 and a Soft7, so she’s just flying. CJP gets a near identical run to last start and see no reason why she can’t make it three in a row. KING BREW was the horse that Laqdar Ramoly chose to ride in that race and ran a solid second. He’s a nice type in the making and has a beautiful, big bold stride. 2kg to try and turn the tables. ETERNAL WINE is accepted for a 0MWLY 1000 at Belmont on Wednesday as well as this C3 1100 at her local track at Bunbury on Thursday. Keep an eye on which race they go to because she can win on both days with the right run. CINQUE STELLE had atrial fibrillation first-up in a forgive. X-Factor filly.

Race 7

OUR MATE ARCHIE bolted in a 0MW 1650 on a Heavy8 at Belmont under 59.5kg in a race that has produced subsequent winners Esta Mirando and Strapping Prophet. He then was well supported in betting in a 72+ 1600 behind highly exciting mare Auto Cruise and just didn’t get the right run at any stage. He’s a momentum animal and drawing barrier 1 and being held up along the fence line is just not his go. Great placement back into a C5, proven weight carrier and drawn wide suits him. ACQUIRED TASTE showed a great turn of foot first-up no trial at 1100m. Has raced like she’s wanting ground ever since. TAKE A LEAF beat home impressive maiden winners American Image and Cosmo Ruler last start. SISU SPIRIT put in his best run in WA last start when getting out in trip.

Race 8

THE SCHOLAR resumed at Pinjarra on 21 December 2025 first-up, no trial off 150 days and won his maiden by 5L. Second-up he went to a C3 and was beaten in a head bobbing finish behind Mangifera before he looked to have a few minor set backs (month between runs, bar plates on etc). Big market watch first-up here in a race that isn’t deep at all. Very winnable if he’s ready to go. BUDERIM was really good firs-tup in a C3 and then was his own worst enemy second-up. Quirky horse so happy to forgive him. MISS DEFIES ME has a level of ability but she’s got issues. Scratched 6/6, scratched 15/7, scratched 22/7. 28 days between runs, now 43 days between runs. BARNEY ROMMEL parked wide throughout last start and kept coming behind Partay.
