Scott Embry’s Saturday Derby Preview Posted on July 21, 2023July 21, 2023 | Posted by Scott Embry RACE 1 LO LO LONHRO is enjoying life in the NW on the dirt. Lead throughout to win his maiden and last Sunday at Broome ran second behind all the way winner Toppa The Mountain. He’ll bounce out of the gates here and put himself in the firing line. Will have to absorb pressure but is tough. CHILLI BEAN went to Derby last year on the back-up and finished a strong second to Advocator. Coming back to 1150m is a big plus for him. CITY OF SIN improves for the first experience last week. SEND IT SON next best. Numbers: 1 – 4 – 2 – 3 Suggested Bet – LO LO LONHRO WIN RACE 2 JUST FOR MARCUS gets another opportunity. He has had two runs in Broome and clearly not loving life but this is as weak a maiden as you’ll see. He has more speed than anything else in the race so he should find the fence and stay out of trouble. In these battling maidens that’s clearly the best spot to be. VALBANI is looking for further and given Simone Altieri is on Just For Marcus you’d think this is the stables second choice. GREATEST DESTINY can keep punching forward out wide. CHAMPAGNE MISSILE next best. Numbers: 2 – 3 – 1 – 4 Suggested Bet – JUST FOR MARCUS WIN RACE 3 WUHAN WARRIOR vs APPLE SCHNAPPS looks to be an Aaron Pateman match-race on paper. With the 7kg differential and the inside barrier we’ll side up with WUHAN WARRIOR. He put together two highly impressive all the way wins to start his Broome preparation before suffering defeat for the first time on the dirt at the hands of Star Soprano. Kicks through to lead and from there it’s his race to lose. APPLE SCHNAPPS is coming out of far better quality races. It’s just whether he can conceded him a start with 7kg and run him down. DESERT THORN is coming to the end of an illustrious dirt career. CONTESSA MEDICI was good last start. Numbers: 5 – 1 – 2 – 4 Suggested Bet – WUHAN WARRIOR WIN RACE 4 DEMERITS PRIDE gets the nod in the Class B race. This field has 5 horses, 3 maidens and 2 winners. DEMERITS PRIDE was disappointing last Sunday at Broome but does seem to produce on the quick back-up. His only win to date was off 7 days at Northam, and he has backed up twice in Broome and they’re probably his two best runs. Started the preparation with a second placing to Rogue’s Point! GOT YA may well elect to kick through and lead this from the inside. Improver. SMART VISION went to Derby last year and ran second to Kalakaua. Long time maiden. ORTUM KRISP next best rising up 6.5kg. Numbers: 2 – 5 – 1 – 3 Suggested Bet – DEMERITS PRIDE WIN RACE 5 KALAKAUA won at Derby last season in the Class B race and then went to Roebourne and won a C1. 12 months later he’s in arguably better form. Finished third behind Finest Clobber and Elite Time and then third behind Almaher Man and Trisuem. Proven on the surface. TRISUEM beat him home when they met at Port Hedland two starts ago. Can easily bounce back. DON’T WAIVER had his first start in Broome and was far from disgraced behind Star Soprano and Wuhan Warrior. LUKE’S CHOICE next best. Numbers: 5 – 2 – 4 – 3 Suggested Bet – KALAKAUA WIN RACE 6 KORANIS looks a special in the 2023 Derby Cup. Last four starts: second to Rogue’s Point, fourth to Rogue’s Point and Sunsphere, winner beating Sunsphere and last week was only 4L off Rogue’s Point, Ombudsman and Powerful. This is a much easier race and kept out of trouble he looks the one. BLOCK OF LAND is a shadow of his former self at this stage. KENNEDY is trying hard and building into his preparation. NEVARDA ran second in Derby last season behind Ulusaba. Numbers: 2 – 1 – 3 – 4 Suggested Bet – KORANIS WIN Quaddie (Race 3 – 6) 1,5 1,2,5 2,4,5 2 Market Market
