It Pays To Follow Posted on September 9, 2024September 10, 2024 | Posted by Digby Beacham Wednesday, September 4 @ Belmont Race 2 – MOMENT IN THE SUN This recently turned three-year-old is knocking on the door and it is only a matter of time before it opens. Having caught the eye on debut with a fast-finishing third at Pinjarra, he stepped up in grade during the week and again ran well. Allowed to find his feet from a high draw, the son of Jimmy Choux rattled home down the outside to run third behind Muddy Waters and The Top Bar, clocking the fastest last 600m of the race. He will be breaking his maiden status soon. Race 4 – BEACH PAD He’s returned from his WA Derby campaign in really good order for Mitchell Pateman. It was virtually impossible to miss his first-up run over 1400m behind Trio, who was unlucky not to win a Saturday race, when making significant ground late. The Bondi gelding was backed into favouritism second-up last week but had little luck for Holly Watson. Provided he recovers from that bumping duel, a win isn’t far around the corner for this promising four-year-old, who should step out again next start at a mile or further. Thursday, September 5 @ Northam Race 3 – SAXON JEWEL Not much went right for this three-year-old filly when drawn wide over 1000m. Keshaw Dhurun was keen to find some midfield cover early which didn’t eventuate and then had to ease off heels of a horse falling back in his lap. That halted her momentum enough to make it impossible to chase down a tearaway leader in Real Deluxe. That was start two for co-trainers Sean and Jake Casey, the debut effort behind The Top Bar was very good. Look for her third-up over 1200m. Race 4 – AMAZING CHEAT Didn’t have much in the way of form to speak about heading into her first-up run, but could quite easily have shaken her maiden status at a big price had she seen clean air well before the final 50m of the race. Lobbed behind the leader from a good gate, but once MISS WALL STREET loomed to a striking position, Joseph Azzopardi was snookered. Through no fault of his, he had to wait and wait and wait before the run appeared. There is most definitely a win in her this preparation. Saturday, September 7 @ Belmont Race 3 – SECRET INTENT Is still very much in the infancy of her career. That said, those with a keen eye for WA racing are well aware she has above average talent. A blackbook performance on debut in a maiden at Pinjarra was followed up by an even better run on the weekend. Again, she was served no favours by the barrier gods, but stormed home in a 3YO 1400m event to grab fourth, beaten less than two lengths by the talented ARCADIA PARK. Regardless of where she heads next, she will be popular with punters. Race 8 – VAST ART Put this bloke in your TABtouch blackbook right now so you don’t miss him when he heads to Kalgoorlie. The Darren McAuliffe-trained galloper was not suited by the Farnley Stakes’ race shape which was controlled at a slow tempo in front by TRIPLE JAY. VAST ART flew home from near last and as McAuliffe told The Sports Daily last Friday, he’d be aimed at the Listed Hannan’s Handicap on Wednesday, October 2. He’ll get back on to a good track which won’t be an issue and you’d expect he’ll get a tempo to suit. He’s primed for his grand final. Sunday, September 8 @ Kalgoorlie Race 7 – STARRY HEIGHTS Hasn’t won since early December last year, but the performance in the feature would suggest he is not far away from saluting. The gelding didn’t have the speed to use his good gate and settled in the second half of the field. It ensured that he spotted ADMIRATION EXPRESS several lengths turning for home, a deficit he was unable to bridge despite rattling home into second place. STARRY HEIGHTS hasn’t won beyond 1650m, yet off what we saw on the Goldfields, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him stretched to the 2100m of the Listed Boulder Cup on Sunday week. If not the Boulder Cup, there is the Hannan’s Handicap as an option.
