Chris Nelson’s Saturday Doomben Preview Posted on May 21, 2026May 21, 2026 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 Big day of racing at Doomben on Saturday with the Group 1 Doomben Cup the feature. Plenty of rain around early in the week saw the track rated a heavy (10) at one stage however with fine conditions & plenty of wind things will dry out significantly, I’d suggest the better side of soft? As I type (19) ALL KINDS OF FOLK needs one more scratching to get into the field, dominant first up she was never a chance here last week when too far back in the field, she did make late ground though & is a winner out to this trip. The wetter the better for the second up (11) SEVEN’S who was trapped wide first up, not yet to win on a good track. 6, 10 & 13 all in the mix. Numbers: 19 – 11 – 10 – 13 – 6 Suggested Bet: Box up to 5 selections in exotics. RACE 2 (14) BALANCE THE BOOKS hasn’t been a favourite of the punters in recent times however I’m giving her another chance here. Excuses fresh (vets) she looked home for all money at Eagle Farm last start before Esjay arrived on the scene late to mow her down. I like her out to the longer trip with the last crack at them & note that Esjay form line is solid through the Group 1 10,000 last Saturday. (3) NOW IS THE HOUR’s chances all hinge on early speed as he’s drawn the carpark, should he get across ok he’s a chance, should he not, well he could be working overtime. (6) MERCURIAL LADY is racing well whilst (12) ARABIAN ROSE isn’t without a first up chance. Numbers: 14 – 3 – 6 – 12 Suggested Bet: BALANCE THE BOOKS EACH-WAY. RACE 3 I’m with the market in this Listed race for the 2yo fillies putting (1) I AM DIRTY on top. Well supported on debut she ended up 3 deep working, second start again heavily backed she sat outside the leader at Gosford before coming clear to the line. She maps to land in a similar spot here & from there is the runner to beat. I’m wary of the Waller trained (5) KATOTO who comes to Queensland off a well fought Kembla win last start, suggest this filly is improving very quickly & draws ideally. (11) LA BARRITA made good ground on debut & is the other in the race with a strong winning chance. Numbers: 1 – 5 – 11 – 8 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 4 Freshened up (1) EARN TO BURN looks well placed from the good gate here. He closed solidly in the Mick Dittman last start run over 1000m suggesting the 1100m trip this afternoon will prove ideal, he’s also a two-time winner on soft ground. (9) SYLPH the clear danger, if it wasn’t for her maiden status I could easily have her on top however she been costly to me plus most punters, just can’t go on tipping her forever! (5) STARDOM was good at the Gold Coast & with a similar performance should figure in the place mix whilst there are a couple of last start maiden winners who were very impressive being 12 & 14, both should be included in exotics. Numbers: 1 – 9 – 5 – 14 Suggested Bet: EARN TO BURN TO WIN. RACE 5 The Chief De Beers over 1110m doesn’t look to contain a lot of speed on the map. Should it turn out that way then (1) HIDDEN WEALTH rates a good chance of getting across & offsetting the poor draw. He worked to lead at the Gold Coast last start when swamped late however drops back 100m & just might prove harder to get past. (3) ZEALOUSLY won well down south first up, fresh form is best form for him suggesting he’s still sharp enough to run well here. (6) PEREILLE will be running on however finds it hard to win. Numbers: 1 – 3 – 6 – 4 Suggested Bet: HIDDEN WEALTH EACH-WAY. RACE 6 Very keen on the chances of (2) PINITO who comes into the race off a freshen up having tackled Group 1 company last start giving too big a start from a wide draw. She’s a classy mare very well placed back to this level & from gate 2 should score an economical run however she will need to get into the clear in time to wind up, we’ll leave that in the hands of J. Mac. (10) MARGOT’S DEEL was very good back in trip last start, mile suits. (5) PIPPIE BEACH was doing her best work fresh & should improve plenty off that. No knock (6) OUR QUEEN either who was strong to the line here last week. Numbers: 2 – 10 – 5 – 6 Suggested Bet: PINITO TO WIN. RACE 7 The Group 2 Roses is the main Oaks lead-up & it’s a cracking race. I’m backing two fillies being (6) FIREBALL MISS & (11) CHISPA. The former ran home strongly in the Gold Coast Bracelet behind Nightline & if not for being bumped in the straight would have finished closer, she just gives the impression each run she’s looking for this trip. (11) CHISPA is a lightly raced filly from the Chris Waller stable, very strong to the line winning in easier grade here on the Kenso track last start, really does look on the rise & will eat up 2000m. (1) SINGLE RED will take very good benefit from the Gold Coast run which was her first in the country, she is very much at home on wet ground. Numbers: 6 – 11 – 1 – 2 Suggested Bet: FIREBALL MISS & CHISPA TO WIN. RACE 8 The Group 1 Doomben Cup is the days feature, can Jenni do it again? Well, she’s the main interest in the race as per usual, howe far in front will she dash this time around, I had the margin at 10 lengths half-way around in the Hollindale when holding on late. That was 1800m, this is 2000m & on that occasion she had everything her way which suggests she’s going to be vulnerable late with the rise in trip. (1) HALF YOURS is looking for longer & gets it today, this has been his winter aim, he’ll be screwed right down fitness wise & the wet track is a definite plus. (4) BIRDMAN was terrific in the Hollindale, he actually hit the line stronger than HALF YOURS however I’d suggest the dual Cups winner has more improvement to come. (6) PRIDE OF JENNI goes in third, all eyes will be on her early. Numbers: 1 – 4 – 6 – 2 Suggested Bet: HALF YOURS TO WIN. RACE 9 We wind up the day with the BRC Sprint where the winner gets that all important golden ticket into the upcoming Stradbroke. I’m keen to back three runners here being (11) HARRY’S YACHT, (8) ABOUNDING & (4) SWEYNESDAY. The former was very good running on at Gosford first up from a break & will lap up the additional distance. ABOUNDING draws well, she’s a very classy mare who will appreciate getting away from heavy ground last start. (4) SWEYNESDAY was also very good at Gosford sitting wide, the unknown is the rise in trip. (19) MIDNIGHT DYNAMITE likely gains a start, impressive last week & drawn well, don’t overlook. Numbers: 11 – 8 – 4 – 19 Suggested Bet: Something on top 3 selections. Market Market
