Broome Sprint Favourite: Border Control

Tim Pike Eyes Back-to-Back Wins with Border Control in Broome Sprint

Young WA trainer Tim Pike is riding high after a breakthrough win in the Port Hedland Cup with Reginald—his first ever cup runner. That same day, he also trained two other winners, including Border Control, who took out the Richardson Sprint.

Now, Pike is hoping Border Control can keep the winning streak alive in Tuesday’s $40,000 Tabtouch Broome Sprint (1300m).

The eight-year-old gelding has thrived since moving to WA, winning five straight races at Port Hedland. Pike says the horse loves the dirt and the switch to grass in the straight, and he’s optimistic about how Border Control will handle Broome’s different track.

“He’s got every chance,” Pike told Racing WA. “It’s a strong race, but I think he’s capable of winning it.”

Punters agree. Border Control is the $3 favourite, ahead of Tinsnip $7, Mocha Dream $7.50, Choixway and Crystal Vain $8, and Charlton Eddie $8.50.

Pike sees Tinsnip and Choixway as the biggest threats. Tinsnip comes off a Broome win and has a strong career record, while Choixway also has recent Broome form.

To boost his chances, Pike has booked top jockey Natasha Faithfull, who knows Border Control well.

“She’s ridden him three times and knows how to keep him happy,” Pike said.

With Capricorn Man scratched, Border Control moves into barrier two and will be one of 11 runners in the Broome Sprint.
