Scott Embry’s Saturday Mingenew Preview

Race 1

QUICK COOKIE ran really well last week first-up at 1000m in a Westspeed Platinum at Belmont. She settled at the rear at 100-1 but was beaten under 2L by horses like Lets Talk, Fantaxtic, Lucky I Am, Ripper Farooq and Saturday Sesh – who are quite simply 5+L better than anything she meets here in a Class B Trophy Race. She should be too good for these as a mare who is C1, C3 and 52+ placed previously. Looks a $1.30/$1.40 pop? BLITZ did run fourth a couple of times in C2 races at Geraldton. Runs to that level and can hold down second. TINY CHAMPION was 7 weeks between runs going into Junction and worked hard in the same race as DANEA ROCK who is a 38 start maiden. She’s had her chances and she’s having her 20th run of a very long campaign.

Race 2

ALS GAL had two runs earlier this season at Carnarvon when fourth to Fighting Thunder, All Kings and Costa Star before splitting Dashing Diva and Swishgobango. 3 months later attacks this fresh and should have the natural jump and run speed to get across from a wide draw and be put right into the contest early. RAYLANA was disappointing earlier this preparation at Northam and Kalgoorlie but finds a new home and both stablemates from Kym Tilka’s yard look competitive here. Ran second to Hurricane Harley first-up at 1200m only two preps ago. POPULISM only had one start in Kalgoorlie for Paul Tapper and was immediately moved on. The Wyong and Gosford ratings from her first two career runs would win this. ANY QUESTIONS has run well in Carnarvon since arriving from NSW.

Race 3

PRETTY DEVINE is a 48/52+ specialist. She dropped a stack of points last preparation – from a c73 down to a c62 – which allows trainer Mack Hall to identify races like this and target them with his high-speed mare. Expect that Sharni Webster will look to hold up from the inside draw and if she can do so then this is a really nice race for her on paper. Recent Lark Hill trial was good enough to pinch a race like this. INTOXICATING is a last start winner on the dirt at Junction. She was able to jump and ride the speed that day. Rises 6kg here and draws wide. Looks a tougher ask? ADDICTIVE DREAM finally broke a long run of outs at Carnarvon last start. Drops 2kg into an equally weak race. GOLDEN OPERA a watch first-up, no trial for her new trainer.

Race 4

STATE OF FURY is a nice horse for these country ratings races. After winning a 46+ at Pinjarra four starts ago she tried hard in C5/0MWLY and 58+ grade before dropping back into another 46+ and winning again last start. She clearly has some feet issues (racing in front pads & hind bars) but it doesn’t seem to stop her. RULER ROCKET has been ‘out of form’ but in races with 10L more depth and quality than this. KOTE has run really well at his last two. Split Simply Rosso and Kimberley Currency in a 64+ 1000 before running third to Weapons Hot and Fire The Guard in a 68+ 1000. Gets his chance to lead here. LACEVINSKY is a marvel. Yes, he loves Junction but he’s an 11yo who bolted in and ran time.

Race 5

HARD QUESTIONS is a great Cups opportunity for Tara Atherden. He’s a 64+ 2100m winner and a 64+ 1930m winner on the grass at Geraldton, he’s a 56+ and 68+ winner on the dirt at Carnarvon – he’s just so honest and consistent and versatile and he went down fighting to Pharoah Show in the Carnarvon Cup just 14 days ago. Great race for him on paper. FRIES WITH THAT kept kicking back underneath of Another Nephew last start at Carnarvon in a brave runner up performance. Not a huge amount of speed in this – he could lead? CANDLELIGHT SHERIF is a big lumbering one paced animal who needs room to move. He can be put into the contest. MYSTICAL MAN is always a chance at this level.

Race 6

WESTERN IMPACT has finished off the Carnarvon season in style. He won two of his last four and also ran second to a flying Tango Rhythm in between. His biggest asset is that he can sustain a run and be put into the race by his riders and so if they look to throw the anchor at any stage expect that Sharni Webster will be sweeping around them three deep and letting him roll into the race. His last four wins are all at 1400m and three of the four in near identical races to this. Makes a lot of sense. REPEATER has his first outing for new trainer Peter Bamford and looks a nice Leonora / Leinster / Laverton horse in the making. KENTUCKY BLUE can roll to the top and stay out of trouble. SUNSHINE TAFE should find this more suitable than recent Carnarvon races.
