Deane Lester’s Flemington Best Bets

RACE 2 NO.9 COUNTESS TESSA

COUNTESS TESSA is a good winning chance at nice odds when she contests the 3YO Fillies Benchmark 78 Handicap (1600m). The Jarrod Robinson trained filly should be at peak fitness following three runs back from a spell and comes off an encouraging last start 3rd behind GRAND POPE over 1300 metres at Bendigo on May 2. She is racing as though this distance will suit and drops 8.5kg on her last run which is significant. This looks a moderate race and COUNTESS TESSA is hitting this race ready to run a bold race.

RACE 4 NO.8 DON’T DOUBT DORY

DON’T DOUBT DORY should be fitter for two runs this campaign and looks the one to beat when he runs in the Open Handicap (2000m). The son of Fiorente was only beaten 0.5 length when finishing 6th behind MR EXCLUSIVE over 1600 metres at Caulfield on May 1. He will relish a step up in distance and the 3kg claim for apprentice rider Carleen Hefel means that he drops 5.5kg on his last run. The prospect of a soft track only enhances his prospects and DON’T DOUBT DORY appeals as one of the better bets of the day.

RACE 8 NO. 4 RIDDLE ME THAT

RIDDLE ME THAT looks well placed to return to the winners stall when he runs in the Open Handicap (1400m) and represents the best bet of the day. The four year old has been racing well in three starts this campaign, however he will appreciate return to the spacious Flemington circuit. He gets the benefit of Matthew Cartwright’s 3kg claim which sees him on the limit weight of 54kg, which is a very attractive weight considering that he is a stakes winner over this track and distance in last October’s Paris Lane Stakes. Trainer Matt Laurie has a fine strike rate with his team and RIDDLE ME THAT looks poised to record his 6th wins from just 19 race starts.
