Scott Embry’s Wednesday Ascot Preview Posted on January 13, 2026January 13, 2026 | Posted by Scott Embry RACE 1 JUST WALTER JOHN sat wide throughout as a 2yo on debut and attacked the line into third, at his second start he finished third behind Monte Tremezzo in another juvenile Saturday before spelling. Fresh last campaign he did things wrong when second to Think Pink Daze and since that point has had bone chips removed from both hocks, and new trainer Mitch Pateman has added blinkers first time. Hard to mis his near 5.5L trial win and should be going close to breaking through. DUST ASIDE looks the logical danger (and likely favourite?) having finished a luckless fourth on debut when unsuccessfully plunged and then contesting a 3 year old Saturday when holding his own beaten under 2.5L. MAYTHISBETHEONE was a $6 chance on debut as a 2 year old and has again trialled well. WRITTEN WORDS was bitterly disappointing at Gero. Numbers: 1 – 3 – 7 – 2 Suggested Bet – JUST WALTER JOHN WIN RACE 2 VEXATIOUS ROSE, FARADIO, PARISH PRINCE and CEDAR LEAF all come through the exact same form reference behind Wild Things and they’re probably the only horses in single figures. Looks the race that the winner will come through and going to go (again) with VEXATIOUS ROSE who has been racing well all preparation and without much luck in more recent outings. She’ll hopefully stay out of trouble here and can start to slide into the race from the 600 in an emerging three deep line. FARADIO caught the eye when finishing off well and gave the indication the further the better. PARISH PRINCE has been around the mark his entire career and can position up close handy here. CEDAR LEAF should have finished closer in that race at 50-1 after being held up badly. Numbers: 10 – 7 – 3 – 13 Suggested Bet – VEXATIOUS ROSE WIN RACE 3 BASSETT HOUND makes his debut in a C1 but has trialled up like a really nice horse of the future. His trial was as good as Belmont Park has seen in the last few months and if he jumps to sit leader’s back he’s awfully hard to beat. Love the way he covers the ground and while a maiden in a C1 is not something we usually see we’ll trust in the decision of Mitch Pateman. URQUHARTS BLUFF might get a touch under the radar in early betting with the two maiden gallopers likely to go up short. Paul Jordan’s yard is ticking along well at the minute and it took a nice mare in Magical Sequence to run him down first-up. WESTERN JET raced extremely greenly in his first campaign of racing. Work in progress. RIPPER FAROOQ went well for his new yard fresh. Numbers: 6 – 3 – 7 – 2 Suggested Bet – BASSETT HOUND WIN RACE 4 POBLANO looks a nice mare. On debut she snuck under the guard off the back of quiet trails and went around 30-1 when weaving through traffic late to go down narrowly behind Rock The Market in a form race that continues to hold up, and second-up she led and walked in beating a subsequent winner in Autumn Gem by nearly 3.5L. She’s versatile and she’s progressive. THE NUN is the other lightly raced, progressive filly in the race. They both have to lump 59kg here and whether barrier 1 is of any assistance to her will likely be debated but she did level out and finish off powerfully late last start behind Rapid Rock. OCEAN GODDESS is more than handy when right and will go round a nice price. SHE’S HOT got the job done in the maiden but gave the indication she wanted further quickly. Numbers: 5 – 6 – 3 – 8 Suggested Bet – POBLANO WIN RACE 5 FLINDERS LANE was put into the contest by William Pike two back in a riding masterclass when they tried to slow the speed at the 1000 and then last time out was solid in a C3 behind Shazair at Bunbury. Always an unknown as to whether they’ll stay but from an inside gate she can be tucked away in behind them and Pike is worth lengths in these 50/54+ contests. PONY UP is just a battler, but you have to admire how tough she is. She has now had 17 starts as a 2 & 3 year old filly and continues to go well. She’ll march across from her wide draw, park herself up on speed and give 110%. LEAD BY EXAMPLE was popular late in betting last start and as is usually the case in these races, the market was spot on. LET SPARKS FLY has really come of age and is suddenly a big chance of a winning hattrick. Numbers: 3 – 4 – 12 – 6 Suggested Bet – FLINDERS LANE WIN RACE 6 LILLIAN was jumping out of the ground late first-up at Geraldton at 1200m and should be far better suited out in trip. From the draw CJP should have her parked midfield with cover getting the right run and if she can show the same turn of foot she’ll be hard to hold out late. BLACK FOR CASH would really prefer if this was 1600 to 1500 because it does take him a long time to wind-up but he’s always been a mid-week/rail out type conveyance and Brandon Louis rides him perfectly. Sneaks back into a C3 after two solid efforts in 60+ company. AZABELLE successfully went from maiden to C1 company and rides the speed. Getting better with racing. MY HARV was really well supported in a Saturday (same race as Black For Cash) and wasn’t disgraced. Numbers: 5 – 2 – 4 – 7 Suggested Bet – LILLIAN WIN RACE 7 UNIVERSAL PLAYBOY has come back in outstanding order. He did take full advantage of the heavy leader bias conditions of that particular Pinjarra meeting, however, he simply ran rivals ragged and never gave them a look in. No doubt Simone Alteri will be on another jump and run mission and see no reason why he can’t bring that form to Ascot. Generally when the rail is out 11m, the leaders who win are those who break the field open – that’s him. ON PATROL isn’t the easiest horse to catch (or ride) but Chanel Cooper did a wonderful job fresh and he’s clearly returned in excellent order. LET’S TALK is doing a bit wrong at the minute, but still finding the line hard late. Simply must jump. HISTORY WON’T CARE was a sharp first-up 1200m winner last prep before the wheels fell off. Will need conditions to suit because he’ll get back. Numbers: 4 – 6 – 8 – 10 Suggested Bet – UNIVERSAL PLAYBOY EACHWAY Market Market
