Scott Embry’s Saturday Derby Preview Posted on July 15, 2022 | Posted by Scott Embry RACE 1 GINGER JIVE is having her first start for John Gangemi after three runs at Northam for sons Chris & Michael. Last start ran fourth in a serious winner producing race: Capital Flight, Senorita Dorotea, Marchamley and provided she jumps cleanly from the inside gate she should take up a forward position. Likely to get crossed, that’s the concern. OLD TIMES is seriously quick but seems to run a strong 950m and then paddle after that. Might be in front for a long way but is vulnerable late. ZARMELLA similarly is quick and can come out running. Senior rider on a bonus. PLATINUM LABEL is never far from them. Numbers: 6 – 4 – 5 – 2 Suggested Bet – GINGER JIVE WIN RACE 2 ADVOCATOR looks to have found her race. Finished second to Isola Bay, third to Casino War, second to Guarded, second to Gorgeous Gus and then last start was shuffled back to an awkward position in a 58+ when stepping to 1435m. 58+ back to 48+ (tick), backing up off 7 days (tick), 1435m back to 1150m (tick) and Alan Kennedy making a cameo appearance (big tick). Like this race for her. THE FINEST is yet to find his feet on the dirt in Broome. Derby is a different kettle of fish and he can improve sharply. BITOVEMU is kept fresh and comes right back in grade. CHILLI BEAN can roll to the top and stay out of trouble. Numbers: 2 – 5 – 1 – 8 Suggested Bet – ADVOCATOR WIN RACE 3 MISS ELLMYA has only been seen once so far this season. In the opening meeting when finishing fourth behind City Regal, Vacate and Danehill Storm. City Regal has won another race since, Danehill Storm has won a race since and the horse who finished behind Miss Ellmya was Powerful who has won two since. You would imagine that Rob Gulberti has targeted this race with her and she can fire forward from a wide gate. DON’S LEGACY is going well in Broome and drawn underneath of Miss Ellmya he may well beat her to the fence early. Hard to run down. PRINCE DEVOUTLY was solid at his first start in the NW and Luke Morton mentioned on Sky Thoroughbred Central that he would improve with the run. WEONA BRUTE next best. Numbers: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 Suggested Bet – MISS ELLMYA WIN RACE 4 SMART VISION might be a 31 start maiden but boy does she get her chance in one of the weakest trophy races of all time. Finished third behind Husstarr and Frequent Friar at Broome in a C2 only two starts ago. Worth a throw at the stumps, especially with Jess Gray taking the ride. TOP POCKET and MERITIA both come from the same maiden behind Needs Time where they battled hard to the line. NOT A WORD is a winner of a trophy race at Geraldton on Dongara Cup Day. Hasn’t handled Broome at all. Numbers: 6 – 1 – 2 – 5 Suggested Bet – SMART VISION WIN RACE 5 DANEHILL STORM is a model of consistency and this looks a nice race for him. Winner of a 58+ 1200 at Broome three starts ago when leading from start to finish and with Simone Altieri aboard you can be confident he’ll be going close to crossing and finding the top. If he can work across and find the front, he’ll take running down. HONOVI was huge first-up behind Pit To Win. Since then hasn’t had much luck and then was simply in the wrong race. Keep safe. AL MAHALO has his first start on the dirt. Nothing wrong with his grass form. HE’S ALL MIGHTY backs up off 7 days but hasn’t set the world on fire yet in the NW. Numbers: 3 – 4 – 2 – 1 Suggested Bet – DANEHILL STORM WIN RACE 6 IN THE BAG is just a punters dream at the minute. First-up winner at $5.50, second-up winner at $2.10, third-up winner at $2.10. He is the perfect NW horse, he jumps, he rolls and he gets everything else chasing a long way from home. Ran third in the Derby Cup last year behind Majoras Mask and Staaden but he’s going at least two or three lengths better in 2022 and Jess Gray rides him to his strengths. Hard to run down again. MAGIC WILL REIGN was good second-up and gets 2kg on In The Bag. KORANIS I stretched at 1800m but he can roll forward and sit up outside of In The Bag. MAJORAS MASK is a dirt specialist. Forget his beaten margin first-up. Numbers: 1 – 2 – 4 – 3 Suggested Bet – IN THE BAG WIN Quaddie (Race 3 – 6) 1,2,3 1,2,5,6 1,2,3,4 1 Market Market
