Chris Nelson’s Saturday Toowoomba Preview Posted on September 21, 2023September 21, 2023 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 Toowoomba’s big day with the Weetwood & the Cup our highlights. The meeting gets under way with a 1000m dash where the very speedy STEADY READY resumes & will be very cramped odds. He draws out & there is speed underneath, will he have to work a little early on? I’ll lean to the in-form DEVASTATING who comes up with the pole ensuring a gun run, unlucky last start he looks the only rival capable of giving the local a run for his money. Numbers: 1 – 6 – 11 – 12 Suggested Bet: DEVASTATING TO WIN (small bet)/EXACTA’s & QUINELLA WITH STEADY READY RACE 2 Well, this is a watch race basically with the first look at our new season youngsters. No shortage of Mishani’s who have basically trialled against one another in very slow time, those trials will prove very little guide. HERBIE TOWN impressed at his two trials here, DON’TLEAVEMEKNOW won his clearly. Market likely our best guide. Numbers: 2 – 5 – 6 – 3 Suggested Bet: Follow the market? RACE 3 Keen to have something each-way on the in-form mare APRIL IN AUGUSTA who is flying at the midweeks having won her past couple. Yes, this is a tougher assignment however she draws a gate which should see her in the first five & we know she can let down with a good sprint, she did just that last start coming from third last. I’m a wrap for OUTLAWED, very keen last start she just gives me the impression she’s chasing further & the wide gate likely sees her settle back. No knock the unbeaten WANDA ROX. Numbers: 8 – 12 – 6 – 7 Suggested Bet: APRIL IN AUGUSTA EACH-WAY RACE 4 Liked the look of ARNEQUEUR at his first local start sprinting away from his rivals in the straight. Yes, the soft tempo up front didn’t harm his chances however he won well, stays fresh & comes up with a good draw. BRIARS KINGDOM needed the run first up which the market did point to, back in distance fitter this time can improve sharply. There’s other good chances in the race however many will need luck from wide draws. Numbers: 6 – 1 – 4 – 3 Suggested Bet: ARNAQUEUR TO WIN RACE 5 I was keen on KRONENBOURG last start as was the market, he came in for strong support however found one better on the day. That was his first run for well over a month & the 1350m trip is short of his best. Today he’s back to a more suitable mile & can go one better. AQUA ALTA better suited today dropping in trip, too far for her last week, she continues to race very consistently. Numbers: 4 – 12 – 5 – 2 Suggested Bet: KRONENBOURG TO WIN RACE 6 Keen on the chances of PLANNED ENCOUNTER who should have finished closer last start, arguably should have won if not for running into trouble at a vital stage in the straight. She looked all set to figure in the finish however lost momentum ending up running 3rd beaten just over 2 lengths. Not sure about the inside gate being a plus however I am about the step up in distance. ADELAD was the horse that beat her, definitely in the mix again, note he meets PLANNED ENCOUNTER 2.5kg worse at the weights. GLASS OF ROSE will relish the 1625m. Numbers: 6 – 1 – 5 – 14 Suggested Bet: PLANNED ENCOUNTER TO WIN RACE 7 The Toowoomba Cup should be a very competitive affair. I’m with the locally trained mare HELEVA DEEL who was terrific winning in town last start considering she was 4 weeks between runs & rising 400m in distance. Strong late she’s clearly going to strip fitter, likely lands an ideal run from the gate & will run the trip right out. NAMAZU leads for fun on paper, never a chance on the wet ground at Cairns he’ll take some catching. NIKAU SPUR just keen on running well, comes into this looking for the hat trick & the way he’s going that’s highly possible. Numbers: 12 – 1 – 9 – 4 Suggested Bet: HELEVA DEEL EACH-WAY RACE 8 The Listed Weetwood Handicap sees the return of YELLOW BRICK who kicks off a campaign which will hopefully take him to the rich Golden Eagle. He’s better than these there’s no doubt & I’ve got him on top however I wasn’t wrapped in his trial & he draws a shade awkwardly, if anywhere near his best though he wins, simple as that. SITUATION ROOM the danger, Tony Gollan has him set for this & he was terrific last run chasing a hot speed pulling clear late. Stablemates MASS DESTRUCTION & ALL THAT PIZZAZZ not without winning chances either. Numbers: 2 – 8 – 9 – 12 Suggested Bet: YELLOW BRICK/SITUATION ROOM TO WIN RACE 9 POCKET FULL looks the way to go in this closing race. His first 3 starts this prep netted a couple of wins & a placing, he’s had valid excuses his past 3 starts & looks set to break through once again. OUR MAGNUS back to 1200m doesn’t thrill me as doesn’t his effort last start however this field isn’t strong & his prior runs were good ones. TRAMONTO some hope off the inside draw, he’s had his share of chances though. Numbers: 11 – 10 – 4 – 3 Suggested Bet: POCKET FULL TO WIN (small bet) Market Market
